In the midst of a circus-like atmosphere on July 10, 1925, a young science teacher named John Scopes went on trial for teaching evolution in a Tennessee classroom.

You can thank religion for much of historic and scientific information. They kept depositories of such things way waaaaay back. Course then the whole inquisition thing burned down a few places in the Middle East (yeah they were such big science nerds they came up with the scientific method) but I would argue that was religion being propped up as a weapon of war.

Good coverage of the Scopes Monkey Trial. I grew up in Dayton, TN. A point which was missed was that the local government was asking Scopes to challenge the law for publicity.

When atheists talk about the dangers of religious dogma they're mostly speaking to cases like the Scopes trial. People are free to believe whatever nonsense they want, obviously. The issue comes into play when a person pushes their fairy tales into school textbooks and federal law. There are places to learn about theism in a school setting and those places are religious studies or mythology or even a writing class on fiction.

Exactly this. When a country (especially one purporting to have "freedom of religion") starts to legislate certain religious views, there are going to be problems. And before anyone mentions that evolution is "just a theory or opinion," I suggest they look up the difference between "theory" and "scientific theory."

The Beagle was the ship that Darwin was on during is exploration. The Captain, Robert Fitzroy, was a devout Christian. He clung on to his faith but once he realised his faith was but a dream he committed suicide using a razor on his throat. Dawins wife, Emma, was also a devout Christian but although her husbands findings caused her great anquish she came to terms with them. Darwin was a Christian and hid his theory for around 20 years knowing the pain it would bring to so many. The Pope some years ago said (roughly) 'Evolution can take care of the body, as long as the soul is left up to me.' Man likes to think of himself as the prime being on this planet, reading some of the comments on KZread I am not so sure.

Oral Roberts University is one of the hardline creationists. I'm religious, but I read the Bible as a mix of traditional and some embellishments of real history of the family of King David. I don't know why this is such an important point to some people. I'm always curious about what kind of whale could swallow Jonah then swimming up a fresh water river to the now Kurdish village of Ninivah. I've thought that maybe there's a kind of boat that has been lost in time and translations. Such as the flying dragons spotted by people who didn't know that China had decorated kites big enough to fly a person for mapping. Or how ancient stories claim that Cyclops fought centaurs, as described by people who didn't ride horses. BTW, ancient Greeks thought mastodon bones, with blade marks, in piles under cliffs were evident of their stories about Titans. Today anthropology describes these piles of bones as evidence that Clovis culture people chased mastodon herds off cliffs and feasted. Perhaps a bit much on the credit to our opportunistic ancestors. I tend to think that mastodons and humans had bigger problems, literally megafauna predators, but it's all conjecture. Anthropology is history without words and history is a bunch of embellishments and whatever words survive. University taught history was a blessing and a curse as it is really just a series of personality cults that reference eachother; approving, disapproving, but most importantly sticking to favorite authors and researchers while excluding others with the same training with differing opinions. Belief in any taught history is a choice.

Missed a key topic by not addressing that Charles Darwin's Grandfather wrote poetry about evolution before Charles was born. Surprised about the “rib” bonus fact. I’m Israeli and the world Tzelah (צלע) has always used to mean ribs in Israel. If you go out for a ribs dinner it’s called “Tzlaot” in plural. (צלעות). Perhaps the modern Hebrew usage is based on the same misconception or mistranslation but today that word definitely does mean ribs.

The rib part was meant to showcase that Adam and Eve are equal, they are both humans, built from the exact same material, cuz if God made Eve also from soil like Adam, then it could be stated that "yeah, but like, she was made from the lesser kind of soil, like a dirt, so look women are worse than men and barely human!". Sad part is that it didn't work strongly enough :' ]

A lot of confusion stems from a misunderstanding of scripture. They see evidence of millions of years old dinosaurs and Darwin’s theory as conflicting with the Bible’s creation theory of 6 days. But the Bible states ‘A day for god is like a thousand years to man.’ Note the ‘is like’. If you assume that gods saying he created the universe, is the alpha and the omega... and know the differences between linear and non-linear time it kind of sorta makes sense or at least seems possible. How would you explain to a bug your lifespan? If you could communicate you would have to put it into language they could understand. A day is like a really really long time, could be a thousand years or 20 million.
A very fascinating video on the history, i don't mind admitting that I don't believe in evolution, i am a staunch creationist who believes every word of the bible.
