It’s wild to me how well this holds up, the jokes are still funny, nothing seems mean spirited or tone deaf, and graphically it’s still gorgeous.

I still remember playing through this game on my Dad's 486 in 1995 at 11pm on a weeknight. The dialogue made me laugh so hard that I woke them up. 10/10, would get yelled at by my parents again.
That's the second longest Monkey 2 Playthrough I've ever seen.
I like the old graphics much better, thanks for upload.
The voice acting adds, but also detracts from the experience. One thing I enjoyed about MI is that it was basically a graphic novel and you were the protagonist. I enjoyed reading it like a book...

I like it with the voices, it's like a movie or a play where you need to play as the protagonist but you need to find out your part in the script while playing it. But I do feel like this is just a different type of experience to read it without the voices.

Classic pixel version + talkie - what we need more !!!
The music in the credits has such a soothing and nostalgic feeling for me, I guess it's just a nice reminder of passing this game a long time ago reading the funny credits. I still sometimes sing the tune to this day.
Just heard about the Ultimate Talkie edition. I'm totally considering it cos the iMuse music (which is here) is far cooler than in the SE music. Plus it has the bit when the Scabb Island map goes silent when you're getting Wally's potion cos it sets the scene perfectly. As if you suddenly get the feeling something's wrong (at least I did)

They 'corrected' it in the SE, I'm still not sure if it was intentional in the first place because there's music at the swamp again (iirc). But it's just the feeling of: 'wait a minute, something is different.' Small thing but so great!

Great stuff. I had to watch this after getting soft locked in my actual playthrough after getting 4 map pieces.
Ultimate Talkie seems to be missing a bunch of SFX. I really noticed this at Phatt Island: Can't hear the guard shoot over your head, can't hear the alarm bell when talking to Governor Phatt, Can't hear the wheel spinning in the alley.

I always wondered why Phatt island seems to be full of so many giant people. There's the guard which you first meet on the island, who seems to be quite a bit larger than Guybrush. Also, Governor Phatt takes up about an eighth of the screen. Then there's the guy behind the door from the Gamblers' Club, who seems to have some colossal sized hands, and looks like he could crush Guybrush's head like a peach. However, at 56:37, when you break out of jail and go back to Governor Phatt's mansion, the guard from earlier seems to have shrunken down to almost the same size as Guybrush. Although, that's probably just a graphical error where they messed up the character scale or something.

It's funny that they haven't included a sword fight system like in the first one, for me that's part of the Monkey Island franchise.
I just finished this on ScummVM, I had no idea there was a "talkie" version. The advantage of text though is you can skip to the next line as soon as you've read it.

What are the advantages of the Ultimate Talkie over the Special Edition, apart from the ability to use MIDI music if desired?
@THESCUMMBAR
7 жыл бұрын
The major advantage is the music. And It's not that it uses MIDI that makes that desirable. The Special Edition version eliminates the iMuse transitions which (I personally believe) are an essential part of the soundtrack. If you're not aware of what iMuse is, it allowed the music to respond to events in the game and vice-versa. This produced a soundtrack that was uniquely integrated with the game's progression. Ron Gilbert talks about how cool and revolutionary iMuse was in the Special Edition commentary. (Ironically.) There are two other small advantages: Firstly, since it runs on ScummVM many more platforms (such as linux) are supported. Also it restores 'Easy Mode' which is not available in Special Edition.

@@THESCUMMBAR I would recommend you use a Roland MT-32 (or its variants, such as the LAPC-I or the MT-100) or the latest version of the Munt MT-32 emulator over General MIDI with this game. The music in this version of the game was actually made to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the MT-32. It would be with later LucasArts and Sierra point-n-click adventures where General MIDI would be best, such as "The Day of the Tentacle" and "Space Quest V: The Next Mutation."

There's literally no point. Just play Special Edition and switch it to classic mode. Unlike MI1: SE, MI2: SE maintains voice-over in both modes. The only reason to use the Ultimate Edition is to get the original music (and the iMuse music transitions) back.

It's the same actress... Alexandra Boyd did Elaine in all but MI4.

Yeah it’s weird. Perhaps it’s because in MI3 most of her acting is mostly in cut-scenes and she could put more context/meaning into what she was saying, whereas this is ‘in game’ and she might have been reading from a script and no animation or story board.
Can't believe Return to Monkey Island completely retconed the ending of this game. SPOILERS They removed all dialogue from the adults, and made them not their parents after all, and the interaction between Guybrush and Letchuck is naive, goofish and friendly, and removes all the tension that came before. Also the dialogue and personalitys are completely void of any "realness", it's like they are charicatures of their former characters. I'll just ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist, Tales was the proper ending, and I can only hope one day somoene mad and passionate enough will try it from there.

i'd rather not hear these voices, especially GB. It doesn't fit him. Guybrush is way less comical, in my head, more sour, more sarcastic than juvenile awkward. I think Harrison Ford would do it. Or Ewan McGregor. To be truly comical, Guybrush has to be read by a voice that doesn't try/want to be funny. That's more in line with the contradictory genius of Ron Gilbert's humour. Only our flat-minded age could choose such flat one-sided voice as this.
