Monitoring a Variable Frequency Drive in Mechanical Rooms - Boiler Room Tips

VFDs, Alternating feed drives, or just simply drives, whatever you may refer to them as are very sensitive to some conditions. Certain enclosures are better for some conditions and it's important that the right enclosure and drive are used for each environment accordingly. Regardless of where it's used or what it's driving it should be incorporated into a regular check for maintenance and reliability.

There are two many factors that effect service life to simply put a number on there. Enclosure, power ratings, environment it's installed in. I would suggest reaching out to a vendor of these type drives and getting detailed questions. Under normal circumstances, and considering they are spec'd out properly, installed, operated and serviced as recommended in the manufactures procedures they should provide several years of service and last as long as the motor, fan etc. to which it is driving.
