let me give you a hint about Turks. You can not find an another nation which built a hospital for only storks, and we built it in 19th century. it was the first animal hospital in the world. I am proud of my country. We are a very hospitable nation.

You should be proud. I’m embarrassed of how some people in the U.S. treat homeless animals and homeless people. They ignore them or judge people who give them assistance. People here get upset if you feed stray because it’s “pointless” in their minds and they blame them for the dirtiness in the city. The same selfish people judge you if you buy a homeless person food or give them money because they believe your helping them stay in that condition. A lot of selfish minded people in the U.S. and the government also doesn’t help much. I appreciate seeing kind people feeding stray animals and showing homeless people humanity.

This is about dogs invading human civilization in large numbers. At this point they are vermin. Just like coyotes and wolves are vermin when they invade human resources and livelihood. Dogs are even worse because they have little fear of attacking humans. It is nothing about humans owning the world. As a human being you might exercise a little bit empathy for the people who have live in these places with stray dogs.

As Baki Dilek mentioned before, in 19th century there was a hospital for storks in Bursa, named Grabahane-i Laklakan means Hospital for Storks. In Üsküdar district of İstanbul there was a hospital only for cats also. In the walls of some buildings, you lay also see Bird Palaces, if you ask Google writing "ottoman bird palaces" youl'll see lots of examples of these miniature palaces. Besides, rich dwellers of İstanbul used to pay some people money to feed street cats and dogs. In the beginnig of the 1900s, the Sultan of the time ordered to take all the street dogs of Istanbul to an island in Marmara Sea, named Hayırsız Ada and dogs died there starving hunger. Lots of people in Istanbul believed that Ottoman Empire was in 1st World War because of the pains of those dogs. Thank God, Turkey is full of animal loving people. They even do not to kill home spiders, ants, snails.

DONT LIE!! It was NOT the Sultan who gave the order!!! The individual responsible was the mayor of Istanbul, Mustafa Supi, in 1910. He was a member of the “Party of Union and Progress” (İttihat ve Terakki Partisi) and they were responsible for the uprising and toppled the Sultan internally as they assisted the British led invasion to destroy the empire. Get your facts right before spreading lies.

@@000aysh Even i mentioned as "in the beginning of the 1900s" it is OK, as i see you're so "sensitive" about Abdulhamit :) Sorry for that. Anyway, what about the other Sultans who ordered to take the street dogs to the Marmara islands like II. Mahmut or Abdulaziz? Even Suleiman the Magnificent ordered massacre of thousand dogs! This was not something barbaric, this was for the public health and safety... BUT the point is not that. As i've said, we Turks like / love all kinds of animals. This is not something that you can explain with Islamic point of view because in most İslamic countries people hunt and eat doves for instance. Turks dont't! This is something a nation's respectfull point of view for all the living creatures. Turks even feed foxes, wolves, squirrels, all kinds of birds especially in hard winter times.

Good that animals are taken care of as it should be but what about humans? I can barely walk the streets in the quite hours of the day (like very early in the morning going to work or late evening) without being barked at aggresively or sometimes being attacked. Several times this year nearly car crashed because the dogs jump in front of a car out of nowhere!. 3 of my elderly family members have been attacked and bitten. Like this summer it was almost impossible for me to take a walk to the beach without a stick or a stone to chase away some of the aggresive street dogs who patrol the syreets in groups.. How to deal with this problem?

Most people think these dogs are abandoned by their owners . May be some of them , you can see some dog breeds bought from pet shops .But most common street dogs are unemployed shepherd dogs or shepherd mix breeds traveled from rural area because villages are usually not keeping much herd animals these days. These dogs are clever but they have strong sense of protecting the area they live. There is also a dark side of this story . Every day we wake up with news of dog attack , dog pack attacking people who are passing by their owned territory , killed few kids , a young girl . A dog in your street can be friendly and calm but nightime when they form a pack its not your cute daytime friend anymore, especially under command of an alfa dog . They kill cats and other herd animals , deers , attack cows too. I am not a dog hater . I am only aware of this problem needs to be solved .We need to discuss it away from dog worshipers ( the ones who think dog is right in any case ) and dog haters. ( the ones who hate dogs and advocate killing them in mass )
