Stray dogs from Turkey find new homes in U.S.

Golden Retrievers are the third most popular dog breed in America, but in Turkey, hundreds of the pups can be found living on the streets. So an organization in Istanbul is trying to find the Golden Retrievers new homes in the U.S. Holly Williams and Barry Petersen follow their journey.

I read some foolish comments. A clever USA citizen writed that Turkish government should invest more for them, because there are a lot of stray dogs, they suffer bla bla bla. My clever friend, in your counrty, If a dog doesn't have leash, it means it's dead. In Turkey, if you call municipalities, they build sheds for stray animals. There are feeder machines in streets. When you put plastic bottle, it gives food to animals, even they don't need, because people already feed them. First, care for homeless people in your country, then give advice to us. There is only one stray animal species, who has good life conditions, in USA. It is rats. Additionaly, people in this video don't want to help stray animals. They are not real animal-lovers. An animal-lover doesn't seperate animals accoding to their breed. It is not different than to seperate people according to their skin-colour.

In Turkey dogs don't eat "scraps". We feed them. You can see some tags on dogs' ears. This tags helps recognize the dog when they arrive to vet. Ordinary stray dogs (aslo cats) taken care of in Turkey by people.

Begging for scraps? Harsh life? Aggressive breeds? Yeah right... I live in Istanbul for 6 years and these people are one of the best animal caretakers on Earth. Cats and dogs are fed, provided shelters and blankies when the weather gets cold. Fancy shops and mosques open their doors alike for animals when it’s snowing. Dogs here don’t dodge traffic, they learned to use traffic lights and if an animal is crossing a road - drivers will hit the breaks to let the animal pass. I love stray animals and interacted with a lot of them in couple of different countries. Turkey’s strays are the least aggressive of all of them if aggressive at all (in my 6 years I haven’t interacted with even one aggressive dog). They never even growl at you and when you call them - they will either keep their distance or come running to you and play. But none of them growl or snap at you, which is a rare case in Russia or India, where stray dogs get in packs just to fend off people who try to harm them, they are hungry and aggressive towards people because of the way they are treated. In Turkey there are rarely any packs, most do gs just prefer being on their own or with one or two other dogs they are ok with. Not to mention that there’s government vet clinics who take care of animals, spay and neuter them, give them necessary shots before releasing them back on the streets. In parks there are recycling machines for water bottles, when you put a water bottle in it - it drops some dog and cat food and some water in a special area at the bottom where cats and dogs can eat and drink. The more bottles you put in - the more food and water the machine gives. And these are not necessary since people and government feed them anyways. So what you said is a misrepresentation. And yea, learn you geography, dumbos. Istanbul is a European city. It connects Europe and Little Asia. It’s like calling USA a Northern Latin America country.

The strays in every bigger turkish cities have been living in siombiosis for centuries. Hence the positive character traits of the animals ;) Once the Prophet of Grace spoke of God's forgiveness because of the human treatment of animals. He told his companions the story of a man who had become very thirsty on the journey. He found a well, climbed down the inside and quenched his thirst. When he came out, he saw a panting dog licking the mud with thirst. The man said to himself, "This dog is as thirsty as I was." Then the man climbed back into the well and fetched water for the dog. God recognized his good work and forgave him for his sins. The companions asked. "O Prophet of God, will we be rewarded for the human treatment of animals?" He replied: "There is a reward for every living being (to whom one does good).

I see the shelter as a hospital. the treatment of the animal should be done and left. because no animal can be imprisoned. care for thousands of animals should not be at the initiative of a few. People in the city they belong to must own their animals. Every street you go to the city where you will find food and water in turkey under every green tree. animals are social because they spend a lot of time with people, children and other animals .. when they are trying to collect for municipal shelters, the people of the region are rising up so that we do not give dogs. the news is full of them. The place of animals is not cages but parks and people. so the turkey you'll see all the dogs and cats on the streets of the city.

US exceptionalism. The ignorance of the US public/Media is exceptional indeed, boggles the mind. How many cats and dogs are killed in the US in shelters? Is it not millions by any chance? Watch reports by France's News Agency AFP on you tube ".Istanbul vets make city's stray animals feel at home " They receive better health/ medical care by the authorities than your people without health insurance in the US. These dogs and cats form an integral part of Istanbul/Turkish society are loved and incredibly well cared for. Get an education - Istanbul in the Middle East? And please stop messing up and terrorizing the Middle East, so the Turks and Europa don't have to deal with the mess you left behind.("flow of people" from the Middle East). I am from Switzerland. I travel all over this planet and there is no country where strays are so loved as in Turkey.

I know this is like 2 years ago. But seriously, how come they don't research the breed before they get them. If this happened where I live, people would be lining up to give these dogs a new home. We have strays too but like in Istanbul, people are kind enough to feed them. I for one have adopted stray cats bc I cannot just stand seeing them starve to death.

Trust me a LOT is being done to try and help the dogs, especially by expatriates but obviously not enough. They ARE implementing educational programmes, they have many shelters. Most of the expats I know in my area have at least one dog, usually two or more, plus they feed the street cats too. The Turkish people DO like dogs but they simply are not aware(generally speaking!!) of how to look after them and the effort and sacrifice they have to make if they have one. They DO like to see the dogs being free too. In the past so many Turkish people have been very poor and life has been very hard for them so when an operation or treatment is needed they simply cant afford it. Many vets work with shelters at reduced rates too. I myself have two dogs and feed about 9 cats but there are many who do much more. There is a lot more I could say on this!
