Obviously if you don't have enough money to function, money is _everything._ But for many big business owners, even once they're living comfortably and not having to worry about money... money is _still_ everything, and they seek to maximise profits, through _any_ means, even when they already have more than they could realistically spend in a lifetime. Sounds like my philosophy towards my work. I don't work to make money, I make money to create. To me money is just worthless, I could get any job and do my real work at home to create and make new stuff. Fantastic quote at 24:05. "But I was never interested in money. Money doesn't mean anything. It's not interesting. I call myself a maker; I want to make stuff. And whether that's software, or 3D, or designs, or building teams or companies-I want to make stuff. That's my passion. And the money is a means. And sometimes you need it to do something big, so you have to work, make money, and then you can do something with it. But the real satisfaction is in *making* something." -Ton Roosendaal, creator of Blender, the popular open source 3D creation software.

16 years ago, I opened up Blender. It came on a free software CD with a computer magazine my dad bought. I din't understand english that well and found it really hard to understand how the interface worked. I was 14 years old and thought that 3D models was the coolest thing ever. I stuck with it... I remember when ray-tracing got introduced. Glossy reflections and refractions was added to the internal renderer. Today, I work as a developer/3d-artist and use Blender almost every day. I have worked as a full time 3d-artist with Maya for a while too, but I never really liked it. It's wierd listening to this crazy Dutch guy who doesn't have a clue about my existence, knowing that his actions defined my life in a great way. Hey, if I hadn't start learning 3D with Blender, I wouldn't have met my wife at the graphics education I took. I wouldn't have my two kids with her either. So... Thank you Ton! You've made more difference than you would ever know.

similar happened to me, at the same age and with a computer magazine - but with Rhinoceros 2.0... but afterwards I worked with Cinema 4D and also Maya (but not for long), then I decidet to learn blender 2.4*; now I work with both: Rhinoceros (5.0) for CAD 3Dprinting and blender (2.7*) for everything else... sometimes also in combination. The olny bad thing in the momment is, that the newer versions of blender require newer OpenGL / DirectX; maybe there could be an option to run and use the program, but the "special" options would be disabled.

It just felt like everything was going to be an obstacle. Such a small change and it made it feel so much more welcoming. Your doughnut tutorial did most of the rest. Blender is a godsend. Even using the 'educational' versions of software that I have access to as a teacher I feel like they could pull it from me at any time and I'll end up paying for something. If Blender did one thing - it made me discover that I'm not the most uncreative person on earth. I can't paint/draw for shit, my old paintings/drawings from school look like a blind monkey had painted/drawn them - so every art teacher "encouraged" me to stop trying because I supposedly haven't got any talent. Then, many years later (in fact, only last year), I learned about the existence of Blender and started tinkering with it. And to my surprise I found out that I'm in fact not the most uncreative guy on earth - I watched many tutorials and tried stuff out, and by now I have even created entire rooms with furniture and all kind of stuff in it , etc.! And this even got me started in making games! So - thanks Blender (and Blender Guru for that matter :D) for enriching my life a bit. 😎

As a Maya veteran (beta tester on v1) who recently discovered the wonders of Blender, I want to lower my hat to Ton Roosendal. The tool he created actually works, I consider it next-gen in terms of UI and paradigms, and that is proabably because he refued to go corporate and maintain a spirit of efficiency. The deeper I dive in Blender, the more amazed I am. Being used to using the most expensive software out there, I didn’t pay much attention to something that comes for free, distrusting its functionality. I now see how wrong I was.

Andrew, from a programmer's perspective, making Blender is way more complicated than Polligon,. I can't imagine how many papers Roosendaal and his team had to read through in order to implement all those algorithms. This guy is an absolute beast.

not really, without charging money there is no jobs, without no jobs how would the system work ? Blender is a great Software, I use both Maya and Blender, as somebody said Professional studios use Maya as they can call their team and ask what's not working, at times people from Autodesk even come and fix onsite issues. with Blender this is not the case, as it is an opensource software, it doesn't provide any kind of warranty (though it barely causes problems) and therefore is very god for small studios and Hobbyists.

With having all this free software I'd even love if Blender offers an Enterprise Version of blender where it charges an Annual Fee (you do always have the option to use the free version with all the tools being Bender an opensource software software at it's core). Charging mainly for the Support they provide. This money can also support faster development of Blender (All though it's already doing very good).

I am really impressed. There is really a lot to learn from this man. Huge inspiration. He has the mindset of wealthy Dutch person that just have enough and want to share it with others. This is perfect example how to successfully make it but not lose who you are, when enough is really enough.

Every now and then the world is blessed with visionaries. This man is one of them. This man knows where it is. He could have made an absolute fortune but by world standards he has a modest net worth. So many people owe their careers and more to this man's vision and human spirit and the countless others who took his baby and created it into what it is today. Money isn't everything. It won't bring lifelong happiness. Achievement will. Well done and thank you to everyone involved in this journey.

Thank you so much for giving us a truly incredible piece of software, Ton Roosendaal. To me, Blender and Linux are the top open-source programs on the planet at this date, in terms of quality and effort and usefulness. You have truly created something rare that you have every single reason be proud of! I have to personally thank you not only for making it possible for me to get into 3D rendering at all, but giving me my only current means of making money and surviving: Neither would have happened if Blender didn't exist, as I wouldn't have been interested getting into proprietary modeling software (especially after moving to Linux). I know I may be seen the black sheep while saying this, considering what I create with Blender is not to the liking of some people to put it lightly. If folks can set the theme of my works aside however, I hope this is as much of a sincere and valuable feedback as any other. Cheers!

For me, the best open-source projects are Linux kernel, Blender, and Python. The runner-ups are Krita, and Godot Game Engine, Apache and Tensorflow. Thanks to these open-source projects, I can have a good life.

Thank you a thousand times over for coming back to the left-click-as-default issue over and over again. When a designer doesn't follow a standard convention, the standard convention of course seems arbitrary. However its statistically supported. I tried picking up blender 3 times. In the most recent attempt I've had success. I understand now that this is entirely because I started this attempt after 2.8 when the interface was overhauled.

This man is one of the reasons why I still have faith in humanity. Here's my short "ok let's switch to blender" story. I'm an industrial designer, 3d designer and in love with the job I picked, which is being a creative director for festivals and events, when covid hit our industry halted, I had to drop subs of expensive softwares (here be middle finger for autodesk), I could have tried my luck in games industry but from my previous experiences, I found it restrictive, had no fun, so I didn't. when everything else failed, blender saved me. (besides blender, unreal engine and the virtual events tech, and the interactive archviz presentations I created with it was also fun! nice one epic!) for that, I'm grateful and looking forward to contribute to the community someday.

I typed in "free 3D software" in google and boom: blender 3D. If there was a top 10 list for MVPest mf alive, this guy would be on it.

The GPL is such an important part of the story, same with for Linux and Git. The GPL acts as a value accumulator. You can't close off the code like you can with BSD licences. Sure, you contribute code to Blender, you can't then close off your code, and it feels like you gave something away. But you've contributed value to the project. The added value retains users and gets more users, some of who might contribute to Blender (which can't be closed off), and accumulating even more value. You are paid back with value, because you get new functionality that you didn't have to spend time/effort/money on.

I never write public comments but couldn't help it since it looks like I just hit spot on 1,084,000th view and 8 & 4 are my most favorite numbers (yes I have thing with numbers). Started learning Blender a couple years ago (w/ the donuts on this channel), lately being really serious about learning it, and hope to be able to do great things with it. The capitalistic society puts so much emphasis on the portrayal of who make it to be billionaires as heroes, but to me what you've done for the society is true heroism, Mr. Roosendaal. Now, Blender touches the lives of millions like myself, and I get to learn from awesome gurus like Blender Guru. The two titans.

What a fascinating and inspiring guy! When I first started using Blender years ago, it was kind of a bit different from the other 3d tools I was used to. I remember being kind of frustrated at first, but I stuck with it. Then, it seemed to really come together around 2.5 or so. What's really telling is that Pixar is officially supporting an AddOn for Blender--so it has been embraced. Obviously, they're not the only ones to jump on. But, I gotta say, it's so cool that Ton is still thrilled with this tool he created back in the 1990's.
