'Moncure Conway and Walt Whitman, Pilgrim Souls', with Karen Karbiener

Ahead of the event 'I Contain Multitudes' at Conway Hall on Tuesday 7 June, Karen Karbiener delivers an excerpt of her talk, 'Moncure Conway and Walt Whitman, Pilgrim Souls'. In this short account, we learn about the blossoming friendship between the abolitionist and humanist, Moncure Conway, and the American 'poet of democracy', Walt Whitman.
On Tuesday 7 June, Karen will delve deeper into this long-lasting friendship, the particular fascination which Conway had for Whitman, as well as the lecture which Conway gave at Conway Hall following the death of Whitman.

Karen Karbiener is a Professor of American Literature at New York University, specialising in the works of Walt Whitman. She is currently studying in London as part of the NYU programme. Karen is also President of the Walt Whitman Initiative, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to celebrate and honour New York City’s literary legacy, and to serve as an organising centre for cultural activism and poetry-related events.
