She was checking if the car was a threat. On one hand she stopped the baby from picking fights, on the other she was in a position to take on anything that took offense. My family was in a similar position when a baby bull picked a fight with or the car in front of us, but the bull was a bit bigger. The problem was that the mom was getting ready to charge us to make us go away. The rest of the herd was right behind her. Never seen so many cars reverse at the same time in such a short time. If she fans out her ears and stomps her feet like the baby, make sure to get away as soon as possible. Elephants can crush cars. This mom was calm but wary, so they made the right choice to keep the engine off and not to move.

Like humans, you cannot judge the behaviour of the species based solely on the behaviour of an individual. Perhaps that elephant had a reason not caught on video, or perhaps it was just aggressive simply because. There could be many reasons for it's actions as intelligence increases the complexity of behaviour.

I’ve seen a number of videos where mama has the baby stop approaching or reacting to vehicles, and in every single one she also gives a warning to the humans. It’s interesting that they do that, because in 100% of them the interaction has been initiated by the calf, the tourists remaining completely passive. Maybe she doesn’t want the ppl to think they can interact with her offspring just because the calf was the instigator.
