Moment Japan Airlines plane hits a plane on landing at Haneda Airport

Ғылым және технология

Highest quality footage I could find from inside and outside the Japan Airways flight 516 plane
On 2 January 2024, a runway collision occurred between Japan Airlines Flight 516, an Airbus A350-900, and a De Havilland Canada Dash 8 operated by the Japanese Coast Guard. Flight 516 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from New Chitose Airport near Sapporo, Japan, to Haneda Airport in Tokyo. While Flight 516 was landing at Haneda Airport, the two aircraft collided and caught fire. The collision killed five of the six crew onboard the Dash 8, but all 367 passengers and 12 crew were evacuated from the A350 with no loss of life.
Both aircraft were destroyed by fire following the crash, marking the first serious incident involving an A350 and the first hull loss of the type since its introduction in 2015, as well as the first hull loss by accident of an all-composite aircraft. It was both the first fatal accident and the first hull loss involving a Japan Airlines aircraft since the crash of Flight 123 in 1985.
Aircraft
The Japan Airlines (JAL) aircraft involved in the accident was an Airbus A350-941, registered as JA13XJ with manufacturer serial number 538. The aircraft was just over two years old at the time of the collision, taking its first flight on 20 September 2021, and was delivered to JAL on 10 November that same year.
The Japan Coast Guard aircraft involved was a De Havilland Canada Dash 8-300, registered as JA722A with manufacturer serial number 656. The aircraft was about 16 years old, taking its first flight in November 2007, and was delivered to the Coast Guard in March 2009. The aircraft involved had been damaged in the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami while it was parked at Sendai Airport and was the only aircraft damaged there to be repaired after the disaster.
Incident
Airport layout with the location of the runway collision and the wreckage of both aircraft.
JAL516 departed New Chitose Airport at 16:27 JST (07:27 UTC) en route to Haneda Airport. The flight landed after dark with light and variable winds, visibility greater than 10 km (6.2 mi), few clouds at 2,000 feet (610 m), and a scattered cloud layer at 9,000 feet (2,700 m).
At approximately 17:47 JST (08:47 UTC), while landing at Haneda Airport on runway 34R, Flight 516 collided with a Japan Coast Guard DHC-8-315 Dash 8, CCTV footage shows a fireball erupted from the planes, with the JAL aircraft leaving a fiery trail as it moved down the runway for about 1 km (0.62 mi) before coming to a stop. Smoke entered its cabin. Fire services arrived at the site in about three minutes, with about 100 fire engines responding.[19] According to the Tokyo Fire Department, the fire was mostly extinguished shortly after midnight,[24] by which time the plane's structure had collapsed due to the intensity of the flames.[25] The collision and subsequent fire were caught on CCTV video from Terminal 2.[26]
All 367 passengers and 12 crew members onboard JAL516 exited using three of the aircraft's eight evacuation slides located at doors 1L, 1R and 4L.[5][27] JAL said the aircraft's in-flight announcement system stopped functioning, forcing the crew to give out instructions using megaphones and their voices directly.[9] Among those onboard were eight children.[28] Two pets, a dog and a cat, were checked-in on board and died.[29] Fourteen people onboard had minor injuries,[30][31][32] with four of them being sent to a hospital.[25] It was observed that no one exited with carry-on luggage, a factor which aided smoother evacuation from the aircraft.[33] Another factor cited in the survival of those on board was that the aircraft, which is one of the first commercial models to be made of composite, carbon-fibre materials, appeared to have withstood the initial impact of the collision and fire relatively well.[27] The last person aboard the aircraft was evacuated at 18:05, 18 minutes after the landing.[20]
The Japan Coast Guard aircraft, carrying six crew members, was preparing to bring supplies to an airbase in Niigata in response to the Sea of Japan earthquake, which had occurred the day before.[19] It was one of four aircraft deployed by the government to provide help to the affected areas.[34] The captain, who reported that his aircraft had exploded following the collision,[25] survived with serious injuries, while the five remaining crew members were confirmed dead by the Tokyo Fire Department.[35][36][37][38][39] The wreckage of the Coast Guard aircraft plane was left several hundred metres from the final stopping point of the JAL plane.[40]
According to a copy of the bulletin posted by U.S. regulators, a notice to pilots in force before the accident suggested that a strip of stop lights, embedded in the tarmac as an extra safety measure, to prevent wrong turns, was out of service.[64]

To be honest that's amazing that no one from A350 died. I think that's because they all were Japanese and they did what they were told and didn't bring their bags with them. Not to offend anyone but I think in other countries this could've ended much worse.

Yes, it’s very impressive that there were no fatalities on the a350, I think part of it is that I don’t see anyone taking their luggage. On other evacuation videos, I’ve seen people try and take their luggage and slow down the evacuation

Without the quick reaction and comptency of the cabin crew with only 3 exits they still evacuated all on board. The pilots did an amazing job getting the aircraft to a halt and turning it onto the grass, letting ATC know what they need and evacuation status. Well done to the fire crews for swiftly making it to the aircraft, and RIP to those 5 losses, I hope the captain of the Dash 8 makes a peaceful recovery.

That plane went off the runway. Day time photos show that. The plane could have been saved if it wasn’t for that right engine. The left engine was off and a fire fighter shot foam into. ANN news have video of it. Fire truck was spraying down the left side. The rear landing gear looks intact on both sides. The nose gear collapsed or got destroyed. The nose down position raises the tail section up, so good thing that the slides are longer now. There definitely needs to have more fire equipment stationed at the airport. Assistance from other fire stations had to respond. People should have a reflective band. Because in California a Japanese woman was crushed by the fire truck. The driver never saw her. And it was said that if she was laying in the foam, infrared cameras would not see her.

The plane was landing so it was probably low on fuel Also the impact could have punctured the fuel tank and most of the remaining fuel leaked out as the plane traveled down the runway thus the burning trail of fuel on the runway. It was a miracle more people weren’t killed

  • @Xorthis
    @Xorthis6 ай бұрын

Totally amataur speculation here, it looks like the A350 struck the very front of the Dash 8 with the underside of it's fuselage, then the underside of the left wing and part of the engine knocking the Dash 8 away in the process, and showering it in fuel from the ruptured wing tanks. The A350 is much higher than the Dash 8, preventing a full frontal collision and averting total disaster for anyone at the front of the plane. The strength of the A350 and the fact it deflected the Dash 8 away due to the height differences meant that the passengers were able to escape. I am also making another speculation in saying it's lucky this happened on landing when the fuel tanks were mostly empty. I imagine the outcome could have been much worse if the wings were full of fuel. The real question is, why did the Dash 8 enter the runway without clearance? They were told to hold short and that airport has runway entrence lights (REL, Bright red lights) warning any plane to not enter an active runway. Even if the REL was inop, clearance to enter the runway wasn't given, and only ATC can give that permission.

The remote cause of the accident is Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. This ministry not only manages airports, but also has the contradictory authority to regulate and deregulate flights in order to attract more foreign tourists. This time, the ministry and the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism forced deregulation in order to host the Tokyo Olympics. Flights from Narita Airfield, which was built to avoid overcrowding at Haneda but is located a little to the east, are now concentrated at Haneda, resulting in overcrowded flights and sacrificing safety. Haneda also serves as a base for the Coast Guard, which responds to disasters and other emergencies. However, the U.S. Yokota Air Base is located 30 km to the west, and the U.S. military has airspace control over the Tokyo metropolitan area, forcing Japanese aircraft to avoid the area. Thus, we have forced them to operate in a manner that usually relies on craftsmanship. This time, we were forced to make an exception for the January 1 Noto Peninsula earthquake disaster relief operation, in which this Coast Guard aircraft flew to support the victims. Passenger pilots and Coast Guard pilots had to make instrument landings because it was dark at night. The burden of managing the disaster operations and the exception flights of the Coast Guard aircraft fell on the air traffic controllers, who were responsible for the operation of other aircraft in the world's most overcrowded fleet. However, the Japanese media never reported that the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism was responsible and problematic for forcing this impossible task, Nor have any experts or scholars pointed this out. It must be a discovery. The media continues to distort its coverage of the incident, saying that it was caused by the carelessness of the pilot and air traffic controllers. In summary, there are six problems. 1. The airport is one of the most overcrowded in the world. It also serves as a base for the Japan Coast Guard, which is responsible for disaster relief activities. 2. The skies over the Japanese metropolitan area, including this airfield, are called Yokota airspace, which is managed by the U.S. military. Japanese aircraft must avoid U.S. military airspace, forcing them to take special flight routes, resulting in overcrowding and a high risk of collisions. 3. The ministry in charge of safety management became all-out efforts to attract tourism and pushed through objections such as safety concerns. 4. It was a particularly severe overcrowded operation during the year-end and New Year holidays. The Noto Peninsula earthquake disaster put pressure on the Coast Guard to respond to the disaster as soon as possible. It is a difficult instrument flight for the pilots of both aircraft because they cannot see at night. 5. The media continues to distort its coverage of the incident, saying that it was caused by the carelessness of the pilots and air traffic controllers. 6. No one is holding the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism accountable.
