I love this! Madonna was a new mother and had had a massive spiritual awakening. On fire!

I'm happy to see you and your mom watching Madonna's music together. However, do you know what Madonna's conveying through the song? It's really not about New York and it's really not about the rush of everyday life in a sense. What Madonna talking about is that she's been in the business or famous for 15 years at that time and she feels like it went as fast as a ray of light can travel. However, it's also referring her metamorphosis of living consciously and that she is figuring out that she's just getting started. It represents the changes in her life both artistically and personally. She had just finished Evita the movie. She won a Golden Globe for best actress. She took vocal lessons for the first time in her life to prepare for Evita so her vocal range increased immensely in a very short amount of time. She discovered that she had a entire register in her vocal abilities that she never used prior to this album. The vocal changes are very obvious on this album Ray of Light If you compare her music prior to the filming of Evita you will notice a huge difference when she sings. She is also discussing or referencing her new found motherhood. She just given birth to her daughter, Lourdes, two years before she made this album. The entire album reflects on her spiritual awakening in a sense, the changes in her approach to life for the reasons I mentioned earlier and specifically motherhood. Madonna lost her own mother at the age of five so there was always a hole in her that was never filled until she looked into her daughter's eyes for the very first time. This album shattered records everywhere and was very different than any other album she had done prior. Madonna also won five Grammys for this album. It was the first time she was ever given an Grammy award for her own music. It took 15 years, multiple albums and Evita for her to be taken seriously. Madonna has always been told by critics and people in general that she can't sing. However, as of now she has been in the business for over 35 years and at the top of her game where none of the girls that came after her can touch her heels. They're always two steps behind her. Madonna has always been ahead of her time. It is us that need to catch up to her.

Milton this may be the best synopsis I've read regarding Ray of Light (both the song and the album) This was during a literal metamorphosis where Madonna transitioned form pop queen to a legitimate musician. In my opinion the depth of this album makes it a classic, and my all time favorite album by Madonna.

Damn, this is the explanation I needed. I have always preferred her 80s songs with her "chirpy" voice but there was something about Ray of Light that made me appreciate all her eras. I've been listening to this album for the past few weeks and it still sounds so fresh until today. Thank you for this!

I was 1 year old when this song came out! I heard it first time when I was exploring her discography in 2015 when she released Rebel Heart and fell in love with this song and Madonna's music in general!

I think this won video of the year in ‘98 or ‘99. I’ve seen these videos many times and am a huge Madonna fan, but this young man is very perceptive and really thinks about the meaning behind everything. I love this mother/son duo.

A lil bit of trivia for you. She chose to show off her post pregnancy abs after having her daughter, I believe just less than 2 or so years. Can even tell she was pregnant. She said her little Lola (Lourdes) would dance around when she'd hear this. It was her favorite song from the album.

I really like this album and have the CD. It's definitely New York City because it shows the twin towers a couple of times. It's always sad to see them in pre-911 times. Good commentary! So many good Madonna songs out there! "Live to Tell" is one of my favorites when she had the Marilyn Monroe look going on and married to Sean Penn.
