Mollusca (Pt 3)- Cephalopods- Invertebrate Paleontology | GEO GIRL

Ғылым және технология

The Cephalopoda class of Mollusks! This video covers cephalopod morphology, anatomy, classification, ecology, and evolution. Cephalopods are animals such as octopuses, nautiluses, cuttlefish, squids, and the extinct ammonoids (or ammonites), which are very important index fossils for the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras. The major subclasses of cephalopods include: Nautiloidea, Endoceratoidea, Actinoceratoidea, Bactritoidea, Ammonoidea, and Coleoidea. I discuss in detail the internal and external features of cephalopod shells, including nautiloid, goniatitic, ceratitic, & ammonitic ammonoid suture patterns. I also discuss hetermorph ammonoid shell morphologies and planispiral forms and their evolutionary trends.

My grandfather actually inherited a collection of 20 shaligrams (ammonite fossils from the Gandaki river in Nepal) from his forefathers which was kept safely in a box. I was telling him about how we Indians collect these shaligrams and don't even know they're fossils of a long gone lifeform and he was like, 'wait we have those'. He has such an exceptionally preserved collection and he didn't even know what it was. I am glad I found this video I will show it to him so he understands the value.

Hello.....subbed immediately and will be pumping all of these videos. I have some phenomenal specimans and i think in the pliestocene era were mining through limerock towards seismic activity, leaving tubes that result in the large "anchor stones" we have here in Florida (gulf coast) Thank You!, ION

Wait, weren't cephalopod shells secondarily lost? I always heard that the gladius was a vestigial shell.

Thanks! I don’t know why but I love cephalopods. I wonder if my local Natural History Museum here in San Diego has a collection of their fossils. If not I can try Los Angeles. Great video but he he I will need to study the text to feel I know it.

So something I have always wondered about these huge 10 m long cephalopods is what were they eating? From my understanding fish had not even yet evolved and most life in the oceans were not very big. Unless they were running around eating those two meter long sea scorpions.

  • @GEOGIRL

Fish had actually evolved by the early Paleozoic and these huge cephalopods became abundant in the Mesozoic, which by then fish were pretty well established in all marine environments. But other than fish, Huge cephalopods, such as the ammonites, ate crustaceans, crinoids, and even smaller cephalopods! But you have an interesting idea, I wonder if they had overlapped with the sea scorpions and how they interacted with each other! If only we could go back and be a fly on the wall (or in this case a trilobite on the seafloor) haha ;)

@@GEOGIRL yeah I want a telescope that is powerful enough to look out into space at a black hole where the light leaving the Earth 70 billion years ago is being bent around the event horizon and slung back to us so I can see it. LoL it's either that or we find a way to produce wormholes that can not only then time but space as well leading into the past. It is these sorts of dreams however which often lead to Discovery so who knows what some astrophysicist could find next. 😉
