Leuchtturn has become my go-to almost entirely because of how flat it lays. Makes writing with a fountain pen worlds easier, and anything I have to transcribe onto my computer is easy to type up since I'm not dealing with self-turning pages. // I really appreciate such a thorough review though. It's actually really neat to see the minute differences which can ultimately sway you to stick to one brand over the other.

The Leuchtturm1917 also looks great based on this video, especially the paper weight and texture... This has convinced me to get one. I have been using Moleskine for many years, primarily for the size (pocket fit) the A5 formats are just a little too large for the average jacket pocket. Just some feedback; I write with fountain pens, and the after much research discovered that the best combination for the Moleskine is a "Platinum Preppy" Fine nib with Noodler's black waterproof ink. There is virtually no bleed through and the great thing about the Preppy fountain pen is that it writes equally well with nib reversed for an extra fine line.

I've had no problem with other fountain pens (with broader nibs), using ink from the same manufacturer. Of these, I'll take the Leuchtturm. I wish I could like the Rhodia, but the paper is beyond ivory; it’s almost yellow. I like the Palomino notebooks. The cover is black with an orange spine, and it looks almost like stitched leather. I don’t think they have a grid or dot-just lines or blank.

Didn't know about Apica and Blackwing, others are quite okay though, I use the Rhodia to write ideas about my novel. Looking for my favourite brand to write down things for the rest of my life. 😂 Apica and Blackwing sure have a heavier paper, which is useful to avoid ink transfers. I should buy one of them once but they're not meant for the European market. Rhodia not available everywhere either, it's 100% made in France, but since I live in this country, I can find them easily. Leuchtturm1917 is a tough notebook, that said.

The moleskin notebooks are really good. The paper is extraordinarily smooth and the lines on the paper are more suitable for people with small hand writing. The only downside is that it costs like 25-30 dollars.

The fact that the paper ghost with many gel pens, and bleeds like crazy with fountain pens is also a huge downside for many. I'm not at all sure I've ever tried worse paper. The newer expanded Moleskine have even thinner, worse paper. Even Walmart Exceed notebooks have far, far better paper, and cost under ten bucks.

@@jamesaritchie1 Clairefontaine Triomphe is my current one. The Southworth proved as inconsistent as anything I've found US made, after all. Was like they put better grade paper on the top, and each one after got progressively worse. From my experience, it's not entirely the paper to blame. "There was less problems with the paper in the past." Nope. Different formulation of the ink. I have been delving into vintage inks, and all seem to do fairly well on paper that's pretty bad for modern ones. Just not as many pretty colours and shades and special properties, which seems to be where the problems with basic papers seem to stem from. Looking at what historians have said about Victorian paper, it was about as bad as modern school paper. Where we worry about bleeding, shadowing, feathering, they seem to have been working around it. Not really willing to hunt for only vintage inks, so Clairefontaine Triomphe works well for me. 😁
