moleskin sketchbook 3
Ойын-сауық
Since late November I have had quite a few projects on my plate, so it's been a while since I've posted any sketchbook videos. This video flip-through is of a couple of my recent moleskin sketchbooks.
Check out my sketch buddy Brandon's work at his blog - bgreenillustrator.blogspot.com/
These are the materials that I used in this video:
~~FAQ's~~
The type of sketchbook I use is the Earthbound Cachet sketchbook. Get it here: smarturl.it/sketchbooks
The white pen I use is a White Gelly Roller Gel pen available at most arts and crafts stores, or on Amazon: smarturl.it/gelpen
Red/Blue Colored pencil from Prismacolor - smarturl.it/prismacolor
I've made two videos talking about the types of drawing supplies I use: • Video
And another demonstrating them:

two things I like about these videos is one it's cool seeing all the interesting people you sketch and two it's kinda comforting knowing even my favorite artist has off days (not that I want you to have off days or anything lol)
I love how you're able to take in about as much as you can just by looking at someone for a few seconds. Not a whole lot of people put themselves in other peoples' shoes, but everyone has a story. These caricatures are great ways to capture little stories about people. I admire that, and I really would love to be able to do this
I love the way you're completely realistic in the way you think but not limited to complete realism when you sketch your pictures. The way you present your work and how you approach it is an inspiration.
I enjoy the chill laid back attitude with the way you talk and share experiences. The videos seem so resonate with every artist so it's cool that we all can relate and you're helping everyone through their problems. And I think we all love looking through great art while we learn valuable lessons. So thanks and keep on the art and all the inspiring help!
i love how u keep up-to-date on posting videos and don't disappear and not post anything for months its a steady flow and you give great advise every time its not like your reading from a script or not talking about what your doing and just showing of your talent your actually putting some thought into what people want and enjoying looking back at ur own sketches which makes me laugh to see how you have captured the personality of that person, thanks for sharing and i look forward to seeing more
You asked to share what we like about these videos so, here goes: for myself, seeing an artist's sketchbook, especially from an artist you like or look up to and enjoy, it's a bit like learning the secret to a magic trick. I see someone draw something cool in a sketch book and I usually think "aww cool! Im gonna give that a try." Usually it doesn't turn out the same way as I saw it but that isn't always a bad thing. Another aspect is that often people who show their sketchbooks will mention drawings they dislike or are a bit embarrassed to show. I like seeing these types of drawings a lot. Especially from people that I really enjoy their artwork. It shows that they are still human and still make mistakes and "bad" drawings just like anyone else. And I think that is invaluable for anyone wanting to learn how to draw. Knowing that their heroes didn't always get it right on the first try either. So thanks for showing these. Sketchbooks are often personal and secret so it's a rare gift to get to see another artists rough work.
I just love sketchbooks in general. they always seem to hold the hidden gems and they can be more fun to look at than a finished piece at times. I like seeing other people's thought process's, too. i know mine, it's nice to leave my sketching world and visit others. It's like a mini road trip. I find your sketches quirky and cute, but still so amazing! and they never bore me. I find you funny most the time.
I enjoy the inspiration from all the crazy expressions you draw on your people and listening to all your little tips as you flip through your books. And then hearing you laugh at your drawings is just plain fun.
One of my favorite things about these sketchbook videos is a how your own drawings can crack you up! That demonstrates a passion and love for what you're doing that's infinitely inspiring and infectious!
I really like the finished colored sketches, but what I enjoy the most is watching you in the process of working. I love watching you draw and the process you go through coloring it. Those are my favorites. Do more of those, please :)
These video's inspire me to work more on art. I want to draw and sketch more like you. So it helps to see your work to help me start to develop my talent and my own form of art.
I love your transparency. You talk so honestly about yourself and your struggles that it helps with where I'm at and hopefully avoid pitfalls in the future. You are helping me to keep my head on straight and your frankness about negative attitudes that can crop up helps as well. All opportunities for growth. I love your work and your love of people. Keep it up! Thank you...
Inspirational! I like watching your videos because they encourage me to draw more. I love that you draw regularly and show things that were finished as well as things that were work in progress.
I've only been drawing for about four years now, so my skill and style are still a diamond in the rough. However last year I went through a huge lag in motivation and inspiration, I could barley hold a pencil sometimes. My sketchbooks gathered dust, It was like a year long art block. It made me lose all confidence in my abilities. But then I found your videos this fall, my first being your "drawing from reference". Something about your fun and bubbly style brought a smile to my face. Hearing all your tales of great accomplishes, and fizzling failures made me realize that I wasn't alone. After binge watching a few more videos I experienced the largest urge to draw since I was in middle school. I drew constantly with your tutorials and advice to help push my artwork to the next level. Sketch books were being filled so quickly they were almost catching fire! Its been months now and I still am going strong. Because of you I love art again, and I feel more comfortable with my abilities. Now whenever I feel myself getting that art block I watch videos like these. To remind myself that not everything has to be perfect, that it's okay to let go and have fun with yourself. So thank you for these videos and all your other ones too. Thank you for for being comfortable enough to show us your sketches and old artwork. Thank you for being such an amazing person!

Thank you!
I find your drawing inspiring and when I see your pencil drawings I can see what shapes you use, how you draw people, it helps, but I mostly and I often repeat watching your people sketching videos for the tips.
You asked us to comment and say why we like watching these videos. It's really encouraging to see your sketchbook and see that not every drawing you do is perfect and amazing and mind blowing. All your other videos I love to watch because your art is so awesome and inspiring and so great technically - so to see that even Will Terrell has half finished or not perfect sketches is encouraging. I also love these videos because it reminds me of when I was in art school and a bunch of buddies and I would always be swapping sketchbooks and seeing what the other person's sketchbook looked like. Mine was always the worst and really embarrassing but it was worth it to me to see how great their stuff was. Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing your sketchbook even though it has sketches you're not thrilled with. It's encouraging for us.
I love your enthusiasm and that you see a sketch and it takes you back. I'm trying to stop being shy and sketch in public. Most of mine are poor but it is practice practice. Also love the music. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes and merry Christmas.
I'd have to echo what other people have been saying: you are very down to earth in these videos and encouraging. It is great to see that someone that is so well liked and admired is so willing to be so open about their process including your bad sketch days. Unfortunately I find that most artists are unapproachable so its nice to have someone share and be open to sharing and helping. I like when you talk about your experiences and challenges and your ways of handling them. Thank you!
I am also an artist and I love seeing other people's art work. You have this amazing cartoony style and the way you actually draw is just so interesting to watch. You also have helped me out of quite a few slumps with your inspiring words.
I really like your honest approach to art in general. I've had many struggles with art and continue to struggle with art, but it helps to have someone tell me that it's ok, and it's natural. Your message is just work through it cuz it's going to get better. I'm also a huge fan of your style and love seeing sketchbooks, sometimes even more than final products. You get to see your process and how you fix them. It's awesome.
Just seeing what comes out of someones head onto the paper, knowing it's just for fun without much thought, is awesome to see. Really gives a good glimpse into someone's process, and let's us know they are still human, and not some awesome finished art making robot. Plus your commentary is of high quality and entertainment. That's why I would like to see these videos continue.
You talk amazingly and I really enjoy your humor and realism. I love how you capture people on paper. It's just really great to watch you and learn from you. You give good advice and push me to keep going when I'm about to give up. You are just so wonderful and up lifting.
Every time I stop drawing, I watch your videos and regain the inspiration. Thank you! XD
One thing i love about these videos is Wills laugh, just so nice... And the poses you do from your people sketches, i often draw the same poses so it's nice to get a new pose in my head.
What I like about these kinds of videos is just to see how you work. I'm fascinated that you go out and draw all kinds of different people and you just let everyone inspire you, which is inspiring to me. I often have trouble with keeping my sketches loose and with finding inspiration, so seeing another artists work and hearing you talk about it can be very useful.
I like watching sketchbooks and sketchbook-videos. because it reminds me to loosen up. I recently picked the pen up after some years just doing graphic design and I get frustrated with my stuff really fast. Sketchbooks remind me to just draw and forget the mistakes. I try to finish my new sketchbook really fast. And as I said, those videos help me to relax and just draw stuff no matter how bad it is. :)
Will, I hope you get a storyboard job soon! Freelancing can be a struggle. Thanks for the boatload of videos. These moleskin sketchbook videos were like a lightning bolt to my procrastination. I did a caricature of my wife today. Eyes, ears, nose, lips, all were there. Kind of a fun looking drawing. But not much of a likeness. I really like your drawings of old folks. Being one myself (70 in May) you nailed it! The drawings are a gas. I was a freelance graphic artist most of my adult life and cartoons brought the most enjoyment. Back in the 70's I specialized in taking a clients words and turning them into cartoons for educational slides. Brush and ink then color in with markers. Titles and text were casual style brush lettering. Some airbrushing here and there. It wasn't until about 2002 that I made decent pay. $50-$60 an hour. That was working at home and doing some web sites, package design and technical illustration. So now here comes Will Terrell on KZread. Kicking my rear end to get back to cartoons. Thanks Will!
Love the combination of drawing techniques and philosophy/humour. more of the complete cartoon sketch-colour with your brilliant narration please:)
In regards to what I get out of these videos, I really just like seeing the work. I find it inspiring, and it makes me want to draw more, and do more with my own sketchbook. It's really just motivating to see someone producing work regularly, and with such charm and style. Keep 'em up.
I like the fact that you show all your drawings. The good the bad and all in between. I like to draw for fun but sometimes feel disheartened when they all aren't what I know I can do. But watching a video of a great artist like yourself and realising it takes time and many sketches to produce good work inspires me. Plus I love the stories that you tell about the sketch book. You have a great outlook on life. As you always say keep smiling :)
i love seeing completed sketches of yours with colour. I also like how you've previously talked about common issues the artists face everyday and how to overcome them. Please keep it up!
I just love your art style and I like to pause the video on specific sketches that I like and try to see what you did and how you were able to capture the personality. They give me inspiration and I actually learn a lot by just watching videos where you draw or simply already finished sketches in a book, so please continue doing these videos! :)
Much to my surprise, after watching your videos seeing a bit into how you see other people, I really looked at people differently today. Instead of seeing them as obstacles, I looked at them and tried to figure out their story of their day or even their life. I got a lot out of that. I even took a bit of time during class to sketch the dude sitting across the room because he just seemed so interesting. I love this way of thinking, and I have only you to thank.
Hi Will, I really enjoy your videos not just because I love your drawings and sketches, I love them because you've been explaining the feelings of a beginner drawer. So, many thanks for motivate people like me with your drawings and your comments. I really like the girl with biiiiiiig earrings in this video. Thanks again and we'll wait for your new video.
I love to come on youtube and see that you have posted a new video. It gives me inspiration to keep going with my own dreams and inspires me to draw
Man, I truly cannot not stress how much I enjoy watching the videos on your channel. I watched them constantly! I really loved seeing your sketch books. You have such a perfect "style" that is exactly what I love in your drawing. I would love to see you do some real time line art. It really helps me with my own sketching to see a cartoon drawn out from the really rough sketch to the finished drawing. So yeah, I would be super grateful if you could do a video with you drawing some crazy people from sketch and then to finished picture in real time. And once again a MASSIVE thank you for taking the time to upload all that you have, I have learnt tons already from your channel already!!
I really like your attitude and stories. Also, your honest stories about struggles and goals and what not. Of course, the obvious; I dig those awesome sketches! I like putting your videos on while I draw if the other artist I work with is out, then it's like I have a cool art buddy to talk about art with and doodle along with (being one of two artists on staff here when I used to work in a team of fifteen artists makes me miss having a slew of sketching buddies). Thanks for being so cool!
I love all of your videos, but I especially appreciate the ones where we can see you actually drawing. It's interesting to see all of the steps it takes to get from beginning to end. :)
I really enjoy your videos. As a self taught/freelance illustrator who is new to the field I find that your videos are very inspiring, especially when I feel like i'm stuck in a rut. I can't wait for more of your sketch book videos.
My favorite part of your videos is the difference in style! Usually, I'm not into caricatures and lean towards more semi-realism/anime. I love seeing your work because there's so much fun and life! Also, I get really good ideas of what I should start doing.
I love the sketch book videos and watching you draw because I learn a lot observing how you stylize things. I don't know, there is something about watching someone else draw that makes certain concepts a bit clearer for me. It would be awesome to watch you do a series of gesture drawings.
I enjoy looking at sketches to begin with, i like your videos when u show and explain your creative process. What i really enjoy about your particular videos is hearing u giggle about where u seen this person or that person, it seems to put me n a good mood.
I love looking at all sketchbooks. They are so motivating to people and yours are awesome, Will. And the advice you give is so true, I even show your videos to my friend to help him too. Keep up the sketchbooks!
I like your art, I like your sketch, I like your storys, I like your laughter
Found your stuff while on a long vacation and it is inspirational an fun seeing someone else going through alot of the epiphanies I am going through. This year started rough for me as each of my folks ended up in the hospital. With them home and trying to get back to a routine I am also trying to regain my momentum. So the vids have been good motivators as I try to get back in personal projects and daily drawing.
So I watch these videos because... 1: it's super fun to look at other artists drawing and look at their creations 2: when I draw it's always exactly how what I'm trying to draw looks ( well not EXACTLY but you get the point.... Right?) so I want to find a new style and experiment with other styles and get inspiration 3: These videos get me extremely motivated to pick up a pencil and get my sketch book out. When I'm so out of it, and have NO INSPIRATION what so ever I just watch one of these videos and I'm like "OK... You... Right now.... Have loads of inspiration.... YOU.... Will not draw the best thing, but you will draw your thing 😆 So yeah haha I extremely love these videos and I'm glad you make them. Most people on KZread just flip through the pages and show the drawing but you explain it or laugh or talk through it which makes it so much fun to watch! ☺️ KEEP MAKING VIDEOS!!
Hey will, your aproach to drawing from life without being restricted to realism is the draw for me. Thanks for these vids. More details in what you are thinking as yoy sketch would be my vote.
Great video Will! I love these video's because they motivate me to draw more. I've been drawing all my life. Nothing gets me motivated more than looking thru another artist sketchbook that's jam packed with sketches! It's like a fun zone where rules don't apply. And it's also nice to know that all artist make mistakes. I've learned that we have to make mistakes to get better. Every drawing or sketch does'nt have to be perfect. I'll soon be posting some of my own.
Hey Will, In a previous video you mentioned how an artist can feel alone when they draw and I can agree with that seeing as when I try to draw in public it doesn't feel as fun as it would if I had a friend with me drawing, I noticed that on your longer videos when you talk about your sketches I like to draw as well as I listen/watch.
I get inspired to create more, and more often. It reminds me to keep the skill alive .
I realy love how you mix your talks and drawings, I can't just see your videos one time
I just like the good vibes and the nice art. I want more of the talks too.
Will, what I like is your calm, smooth speaking. Also, I like your style of sketching. Can you talk about starting out as an artist and the steps you went through in to develop your particular style? who were you influenced by?
Your drawings are beautiful and some are really hilarious! I also love how you can capture different people's personalities through their postures and stuff, I never used to observe people like that before and now I do all the time!! :)
I like seeing what crazy fun character you can make when you see an everyday person, I also just like seeing people draw because I like to draw :).
Hi Will! I just found you yesterday and really enjoy watching your videos. Not only are you fun, but also very inspiring. I haven't been able to draw much since I graduated from high school, which is over a year ago. But watching your sketch-videos makes me feel like drawing again, and maybe I'll be able to get back to it. It's just that whenever I try, I sit for hours trying to sketch but doesn't even manage to finish that. It really sucks and I don't know how to find my way back.
I overall like to see people show they're good and bad art. They're progression through the years so when I look at my own work I don't feel so down if you get my meaning. Stuff like this always inspires me and your feedback on your own work is quite amusing since I do the same with my stuff.
Well u give good advice and it gives me ideas turns on my brain and since ur such a great artist I love seeing how u unwind and loosely sketch when no ones watching its so inspirational that's why thank u for turning the artistic switch in my brain to turbo more ideas now float in my head as I remember your great advice
This one is great. Again exactly what i needed. Good to know and see you have some down days and weeks. I was just talking about this at the CTN road show thing with Justin Rodrigues. It good to know people I look up to also struggle. I think you forget that some times. So thats what I love about this video.
I love your videos! And I love your style! My style is more just shapes lol but I love looking at all the expressions you capture with your people drawings. Keep up the good work!
I like your line quality, very fluid and full of life. That's what attracted me to your videos and thats what keeps me here haha all you have to do is keep drawing haha I'm not going anywhere
I watch your sketch book videos Because I LOVE HOW YOU DRAW even when you say its not a good sketch i see it AMAZING .... You help me out with my sketches and the things i do wrong .....super inspiring ..your style in drawing ...is So my style.....thank u
I love your style of drawing people. it captures my attention and I could look at your drawings forever. :) You also make me laugh and inspire me. so keep it up! keep having fun
love seeing how you capture a personality, and you have really...relative advice i guess is what id call it... your not someone showing off all there best art, your not using fancy materials its like sitting down with a friend and just talking about art and i really like it
What i see in your journey of wellness is your personal honesty in what you provide to the viewer also your creativity, i think by the looks of the girl with the 'hula hoop' ear rings is that she has grown out of them, so decided to customize them as ear rings instead lol
Your drawings inspire me to do better with my artwork, and feel confident to explore more drawing ideas and tools :)
Please do more sketchbook videos! Love them!
As a college student who isn't planning on being a full-time artist, I feel like I shouldn't draw anymore because I'm not going to use it for anything. Your videos remind me that drawing is FUN and that's why I have been doing it my whole life. Plus, your personality is so much fun, I see how confident you are in your silliness and I want to be that way too.
I love your sketches and I would love to see a picture of a real person and see your interpretation of them into a sketch. Most of your sketches really make people look interesting and I don't see that many interesting or interested people nowadays. I blame cell phones and office jobs. They seem to take the life out of the face. Thanks for all of your time putting these videos together. ~ John
I love your videos not only because of your artistic views, but also your techniques. Great shading, nice colors, precision... all of it is amazing! I just attempted one of your previous tips; drawing a blob shape then turning it into a face... it helped me a lot! Thanks! Your videos are helping me and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been inspired greatly by your encouraging videos! :D
Good day sir! I found some of your videos today- found them quite inspiring! I really liked hearing a little bit of your story of your ups and downs with your art- I can relate- though I only do my art for myself I get the ups and downs with it- I like that you have included your "brain fart" days of drawing in with your better sketches. I think some people have a skewed view that artist draw beautifull all the time. Your commentary is awesome!
Even your bad sketches are great! wow! I love see sketchbooks cause they challange me to draw more on mine!
Watching your videos are neat and as another Artist, it shows how there is time to improve and to have fun with your sketches. Myself, I haven't been sketching daily when I should of... your videos are inspiring to watch :)
What I like about your videos is the progression of your style. We don't get to see your work from day one but we do get to see a least a partial look at the journey you went/are still going through as you try to get better and better.I'm not really sure but theres just some sort of encouragement realizing that there are others who have going through what going through and getting a glimpse at being able to someday reach your level is an encouragement Plus the jokes are really funny XD
I like when you tell stories about certains caricatures :D but what I think is most enjoyeble are you "people sketching" videos where you talk about variouse topics about drawing and life, they helpd me alot dealing with my work and lack of progression in recent days
I just like hearing you talk about your drawings
Mainly I just like looking at other peoples sketches, you also comment a lot on your sketches which is something other people don't do that often. Also your style is awesome!
I enjoy this because, well most of the time I have no inspiration for drawing people at all, and that is one of the things I really want to improve on. But every time I watch one of your videos, I just feel so inspired, it's crazy! I see your drawings and I say to myself: "Hey, it really looks like he's having a lot of fun doing this!" and it makes me want to immediately go out and draw people and have fun too :D
You asked what we like about these videos. Great inspiration:)
I like your voice. You're calm and cool. And I like that you think your sketches and drawings are funny, I think so too. I saw a drawing on your page that you did on a "bad day" that inspired me right away to pick up my tablet and draw something.
you have amazing talent! i would like to hear more on Technics and maybe the type of tools you use and maybe why you use curtain pens... love you videos! keep up the great work!
im an artist too and your sketches really inspire me and its when im inspired that i do my best work :)
I like your sketch books more than your single image tutorials.
You may think they're lousy sketches, but you are so far beyond what I'll ever get. I love your work. Those earrings... honestly. How can I draw like that? Yes, and I think your advice about a sketching buddy is great. But I don't know anyone who is interested. I love your commentary and I'll also say you should love your work and be proud of it. Okay, so you don't think it's so great, but if I could draw like that, I'd be in Heaven or Hawaii. I don't know which.
nd seeing how many sketchbooks you fill inspires me to grab at least one of the like 10 sketchbooks ive bought this year and draw horrible drawing until i improve lol
I'm not really sure I know what I want to do with art. Right now I feel like comics/graphic novels are a place to try and I'm also interested in being a story board artist, but currently i'm just trying to get to a level where I think my stuff is worth putting into a portfolio and sending out and all that. Your videos are inspirational to me and I've gotten a sketchbook solely for drawing people from life! No suggestions from me other than keep drawin and talking while your camera is recording!
Gosh, I just discovered your channel, and it's amazing. Your videos have so much inspiration to them, and sort of encouraged me to sketch more :D And your art is so amazing >w< They have so much life to them.
Hi Will, what I like about the video's is you! You have a great personality and your work in so inspiring! I look at your work and try to create similar sketches. Also, I was wondering if you would be willing to create a video with tips on how you use your markers. You have a very unique way of using them. Thanks!
I'm an Illustration student and sometimes just need some inspiration. I don't find that fully rendered finished illustrations help me too much when I'm in a drawing slump so I like to see how other artists work and their process.
I like your videos because you share your experience with us. What you find helps you to draw better, this gives me pointers in what to practice and how to practice it ^_^
I like watching your video because you sound joyful.
One big thing I get from this videos is how to SEE and creativity and just listen to how you actually speak about you sketches people aren't open to talk I'm in high school no one talks about their process in doing things and the creativity dead
I like to see how you exaggrate things, but yet keep the fundamentals! I would like to see your process of making a portrait according to a picture or someting... great videos! :D
Even your bad sketches are great!
I like this video as it teaches me that sketch books do not have to be perfect.. though for me these bad ones of yours are already perfect in comparison to mine :D Thanks for sharing this advice with us.
i really like your art
heyy willl... i really realllly love your work.. you are such an inspiring artist for me!!! i love watching ur videos!! the very best thing i like is the way u have shown ur dedication all these years of your career & on top u share all of your experiences, which included all hardships to all amazing moments you have gone through!! I really motivated, n do not miss a single day of sketching.. you have helped me understand these 4 great words *Keep Going* *keep doing* :)
I like them cause ur so inspirational
Your sketches are funny and amazing.. I'd like to see some speed arts .
hi i have watched all your videos and i like your sketchbooks, your style of caricature, and your attitude toward life, and my art is boring to me and i would like to learn caricature art to better myself and it would make me happy. i have always wanted to learn the caricature style. but i have never had the time or the patients but i am trying my art style is all imagined out of my head, or my hand with a mined of its own likes to create thing. lol . thank you
