Mohnish Pabrai is very well known for his 10 commandments and his book "The Dhandho Investor". But during his talk at a university in Peking/Beijing, Pabrai stressed that he is going through a renaissance right now.
The transformation he is making right now is a transformation from a deep value investor who is primarily looking for dirt cheap businesses, but businesses that are not necessarily of above-average quality, to more of a compounder investor who is looking for stocks of very high quality that he can then hold for a very very long time.
He is essentially looking for 100-bagger stocks - stocks that can be considered compounding machines with long runways for growth and 100-bagger potential. It seems like everyone is looking for 10x stocks in 2021 (or even 100x stocks) - stocks that will explode in 2021. But there is no magic formula for finding these stocks. Nonetheless, Pabrai developed a framework that should help investors find these 100-bagger stocks.
In this video, I want to discuss Mohnish Pabrai’s 100-bagger framework. In this presentation / interview, Mohnish Pabrai outlined various paths that businesses can take to return $100 for every $1 invested. And moreover, he introduced a new rule that he plans to stick to in the future and he referred to it as the 50 billion dollar rule.

I imagine it's easier to find a couple of 5-10x companies to compound your investment instead of a single 100x name, it takes *a lot* of discipline to hold on to an investment until it gets to 100x.

  • 3 жыл бұрын

I actually agree with you Petar.

It is no harder, in that the process is the same. You cannot know in advance if a company will be a 5 bagger or a 100 bagger. You only know after the fact. However, you must have the patience to allow a company to grow as much as it can. The only thing that is absolutely certain is that you will never have a 100 bagger if you sell your 5 or 10 baggers.

The best way to create wealth is to own a business. People are obsessed about owning a small portion of a big pie, but billionaires start by owning the entire pie when it is small. The mathematics will never favour an investor as you need to already be a HNWI to make money in investing. But for a business owner, he only needs to add value to make 100 times more money than the investor with 100 times lesser investment, so basically he makes 10000 times more than an investor. Thats why a 100,000 invested in fb or google early on, would made the investor 10 million but the owners 100 billion in the same time. A difference of 10000 times more.

Are you actively looking for 100-baggers? I actually think investors should focus on potential 10-baggers first.

I disagree completely. You cannot look at two companies and decide this one can be a 10 bagger and this one can be a 100 bagger. Focus on companies that have the potential to grow dramatically over the next 20-30 years. Some will be 10 baggers. A few will be 30 baggers. Maybe one or two will be 100 baggers. However, it is absolutely certain that you will never have a 100 bagger if you sell all your 10 baggers. It takes time and it takes patience.

Great video mate, I'm a big fan of Chris's book, some great take aways from Pabrai latest videos, I have been making a vid around this as well lol. have you been looking into shinoken? I find it pretty interesting.

  • 3 жыл бұрын

Hey! Haven't seen that you have done a video too, I'll check it out! Yeah, honestly, I feel like most of the talks Pabrai uploads are extremely educational, but once you have watched a few of them, it can at times feel a bit repetitive. But that Beijing talk was certainly very fresh and basically he talked about things he never talked about before. I loved it! I had to google what Shinoken is haha. Did Pabrai mention the company in his talk? I must have missed that.

@ I'm still working on the video, I'm having a crack at making a doodle-style video which is pretty slow going but I need to polish my video editing a bit try and get them as slick as yours. Yeah I agree about Pabrais chats do get a little repetitive but I don't mind, I need to hear things a few times to make them stick lol. He mentioned Shinoken only briefly in a chat he did with a manual of ideas, it's his most recent purchase the company has a lot of traits of what he has been talking about recently I feel. There is a good thread in the corner of Berkshire and Fairfax website if you are interested in reading more about it.

Is historical performance less important when it comes to potential 100-baggers then?

  • 3 жыл бұрын

I think excellent historical performance is a good indicator (no guarantee) that the business possesses some kind of unique characteristic that it allows it to continue to do well. But you need to have a good qualitative understanding of why the business will continue to prosper.

Isn't this the strategy that VC use in their investments?

  • Жыл бұрын

What exactly are you referring to? Buying small companies? Well, I guess they'd claim their their strategy is a little more sophisticated. And VC investments probably follow a power law distribution more than public market investments.

  • @raoplns

    @raoplns

    Жыл бұрын

@ agree. VC typically looks for a 100 bagger potential in each investment they make. But they may be investing in many and only a few reach that stage. A public listed is less risky as it has proven it's business model to a great extent compared to a VC investment.
