Happy made a great point. As someone who plays slowly and doesn't regularly run everything for gear, I find it really hard to join groups later because of high ilvls and no learning groups.
IMO, when a new extreme comes out, ideally, there should be an extreme dungeon that you can grind gear/accessories of the same ilvl. When an Ultimate comes out, yeah, the savage should be unlocked.
Mr happy and mr angry in the same room never thought I'd see the day

its a good idea but it would completely ruin the economy around materia. Materia would literally be worth nothing after week 1 of an expansion drop and i dont think thats gonna fly. They would have to make it so materia slowly breaks overtime otherwise at that point they might as well just completely rework the entire materia system as a whole (which i wouldnt mind)
@mjkuhnke

no it's not. what would it accomplish? Your either just adding a couple more materia slots per tier which is meaningless in the grand scheme of things or Completely crashing an entire economy of the game that a lot of people rely on by removing materia slots from the extremely disposable gear

@@BeauxPhades while this is true, it doesn't really change the fact that it's still weekly locked, not to mention that as the tiers increase, you need to keep doing previous alliance raids, since the later twines, shines, etc. require coins from both(or even all 3 at the final tier) alliance raids, which is just a huge time sink.

1:03:37 IT ALWAYS COMES BACK TO THE 2 MINUTE META BABY, EVERYTIME
I've heard Xeno's rant about gearing before and I wholeheartedly agree, especially as someone who has to work 10-14 hour shifts and can't possibly commit to savage raiding static groups but would love to be able to earn relevant gear in other ways so that I can more easily pop into the party finder when time allows. I think the absolute easiest fixes that SE could implement would be to make the gear drops from the 24 man raids savage equivalent and to add savage gear tomes to Criterion Savage raids and twines/oils to regular Criterion. Both of these contents would initially lock you to 1 peace of gear per week until the next tier of gear comes out anyway plus they launch WAY AFTER the savage tiers themselves so this would immediately allow both casual and hardcore players more chances at gear while also encouraging people to actually do the Criterion dungeons weekly as they are all but dead now despite people saying that they were really fun to do...for the one time for that single piece of materia. The Criterion thing is the most puzzling decision to me because literally every piece of challenging content in the game has decent or coveted rewards behind it, mostly in the form of relevant gear, but they opted to put NOTHING in them. There are more rewards for doing Island Sanctuary for Hydaelyn's sake and that's solo content!
Happy and Frosty smiling while Xeno rants is really funny.
I don’t think they need to increase the tome cap per week, but they do need to roll over the cap. No “farm it or lose it”. Week 1, cap is 450. Then 900, then 1350. Stop punishing me for going on vacation or having a crazy work week.
Another point: Dont give me a free piece of sastasha gear when im on a lvl 85 character during leveling roulette....its annoying to find it and trash it.....
Excellent show with two of my fav FFXIV content creators
Some timestampes with the topics discussed [ Ranted by Xeems ] Would be appreciated.
My ideal gear progression would go something like this: Previous tier augmented/raid *00 Normal Dungeon Gear (1 patch delayed) *05 Crafted Gear and 1st relic step *10 First EX and Next patch's dungeon gear *15 Tomestone unaug, aug crafted, nm raid *20 Criterion, 2nd EX, and alliance raid *25 Raid Savage, Criterion Savage, Aug Tome *30 Savage Weapon *35 Capped relic and Ultimate weapon *35 with additional meld slots
I wouldn't mind a relic accessory that alters how certain job actions perform or can be used like cross class actions of sorts for a bit of variety. I get that keeping the gearing treadmill a bit stale keeps things balanced, but it is a bit boring
The moment I saw the name of the video and the guests, I knew what I was in for. This was great!
This was dope! Happy and Xeems work well together, thank you Frosty
A very descriptive, playful, and entertaining discussion that was very fruitful in showing the inconsistencies of meta and core game systems. Even as someone that's cleared this tier, I was shocked to see how much wisdom I could absorb is such a short time about how FF14's horizons could potentially expand. They're right! The 2 min meta defines everything else. It's the core of the game, and so all else is secondary to cranking out as much damage as possible in 2 min. If Squeenix allowed for more build variety (in terms of being able to execute optimal party compositions that are outside of the 2 min meta) then the game could have more horizontal depth. Haste vs. crit builds that have different BiS pieces with savage-equivalent item levels, all coming from araid and V&C dungeons. This could very well be the first step, gearing wise, considering some classes already have this choice. It would be fun to add variety to gear sets of the same class for something, say like rpr, and feels like a very natural way to progress. There are probably more factors that contribute to the meta being centered around 2 min than build and stat variety, though. Boss and class design keep the 2 min meta in mind, and contribute to it more, imo. Still, as someone who's only experienced Endwalker raiding, a game with more ways to do max deeps would be rad Awesome vid! :D
My biggest issue is that previous tier gear means nothing when the new tier comes out, and that crafted gear just automatically replaces it every time. So all that work doesn't really mean a lot.
I'm only 20 minutes in, and I'm not at end game because I'm trying to level lots of jobs as I go. Hearing that I'm going to reach a point in the game where I'm essentially going to be locked out of this approach really concerns me. I agree that this is not about horizontal progression.... it sounds to me like each job should be able to basically have its own lockout for end-game content rather than making it character based.
@lakie92

You can still play multiple jobs at endgame, youll just be stuck for better gear for a while. But yeah, some way to get more gear for other jobs would be needed, im sick of having 2 characters levelled so i can gear a healer and a dps

I never really thought about it. It would be nice for gearing if instead of consuming the upgrade materials if we just got a 10 itemlevel gem increase for the items to share between jobs my game time will run out before i do the weekly upgrade path for every job. I have all jobs at 90. being able to horizontally keep the same itemlevel gear and pick which piece suits your job would be nice too. Since i want spell or skill speed on some but not others in the same gear class.
What happy mentions at 20:01 is why i never got into savage raiding. Started the game in ShB and was a cut scene skipper and got to the end of ShB and it was around when E5-8 was current and opened up PF saw a bunch of words that didnt make sense and just straight up gave up on ever trying Savage because there was literally no resources to help out new people. And from watching strimmers looking at PF's and the terribly high gear requirements that literally every PF they looked at were I decided that savage raiding would never be for me if I didnt play the game from week 1 that the content came out.
For savage and tomestone gear, they should split the costs into a slot unlock and a purchase price. That way, instead of a weapon costing 8 books, it would cost, say, 6 books to unlock weapon purchases, then cost 2 per weapon after that. That way, the first set of gear can still cost the same and take a while to farm, but then, gearing alt jobs becomes much faster. Then, in the MSQ patch after savage: Unlock savage gear and move tomestone gear to the secondary, unrestricted tomestones. Also, Materia should sockatable into generic blank items that can be associated with any item slot and saved with gear sets. The gear item can still define the Materia available. E.g. 1 primary. 2 primary + 3 secondary. It will then just ignore any Materia socketed in the associated blank item that goes beyond those limits. The gear would still also ignore any Materia that is too high level for it, and apply it’s stat caps. You would probably need these blank items to have an ilvl associated with them to determine the over-melding chances. socketing Materia into these blank items. You could then just allow a way to specify the number of primary slots. Either up front, or just have an option when melding to switch to melding as secondary slots. I’d like these to be reusable, but, if they want to still require new gear to require new Materia, they could just make these items bind to the gear they are first used for. One piece of gear could have multiple Materia items bound to it, just not vice-versa. Although, if it’s going to be bound to gear, you could just allow adding Materia tabs to gear, with only one tab being active at a time, and gear sets remembering the Materia tab for each piece.
I am someone who needs a "tangible" reward at the end so I only really progged Criterion out of obligation to help out friends. I enjoyed the fights, but I still kept finding myself thinking on the last boss prog "But I don't get anything from this, no gear upgrade, not even a glam" I farmed the fuck out of Variant dungeon and completed all the paths for the stupid undercover glam though.
2 types of ppl that go through bs: either they get joy from wanting others to suffer the same way they did or worse OR they don't ever want anyone to suffer through what they went through. Not all suffering is bad but not all suffering is good. It's like working at a job and your boss says: "I don't care how hard or long you work, you can't make more than X amount of money for the paycheck" where X amount only covers your bare necessities. You have goals and aspirations and you might like the job, but working there is kind of a waste if the only reason you're working there is to survive. I believe you should be awarded for your time and honest effort and you should be encouraged to want to spend the time and make the honest effort. I could go on and on, but as someone who loves the game, it has went from the idea of a hobby and past-time the developers intended to my second job to experience the content I want.
I agree with like everything here, true takes. I like this game so much so I want it to be so much better than it currently is at the high end
Great episode

@1:00:00 He just described tier sets in wow.
The problem with the current bis* is that it is designed for player retention. By limiting the amount of pieces that you can get per week, the increase the number of weeks that you play for. What would you do after your all-lv90 character is fully geared until next tier? Un-sub? Getting glamours? Un-sub is less money for SE, so they leave you with getting glams while you are waiting for the next week. Edit: The glam is just an example of something to do.
I love these guys man
If I were to change anything about gear, I just think that all raid gear should be like the finished Bozja relics where you can finagle the stats perfectly to the very last point, while for tomestone gear you kinda have to deal with what's on them. If not raid gear, then something in another type of content to augment raid gear further into that would be nice. And there should absolutely be one more ring option if they're even going to keep two ring slots. It's mildly frustrating to play one of the classes where your highest ilvl options for a slot are between skill speed+determination or skill speed+direct hit rate. It'd be really satisfying for speedrunners to have that level of customization available, to really minmax their GCD speed and other stat tiers for the fight they're speedrunning. Healers and Tanks would be the biggest benefactors to this, because the little bit of piety on that second ring for healers is almost never make or break- neither is the damage, of course, but Piety is the only stat in the game that's a full, true waste when you don't need it, aside from stat points that are in between stat tiers. At least tenacity does a *little bit* of damage... still absolutely sucks though. I wish there were enough Food options to cover every possible combination of stats as well, that would be hella nice too... I played omnicaster for Abyssos and to have BLM and the other two casters geared fully, I had to earn every single piece of tomestone AND raid gear, and I'm not even really happy with the stats that were on some of my slots, especially slots where there's only one choice (ring, weapon.) And the worst was when I left my static (cordially) for unforeseen circumstances and ended up in a different Ultimate group, I felt *SO* bad that the group spent so long helping me get all that loot just for me to end up having to leave the group. Thankfully there was no drama over it but I still felt really guilty about it. If the level of time investment and loot lockout investment wasn't so harsh, it wouldn't feel so bad. Or if the other players would have also gotten something out of it. Maybe raids should just be personal loot and not party wide anymore? They have the technology, they showed it in Bozja and Eureka content... I digress. There's a lot of solutions and I do think *something* needs to be done as well so people can play multiple jobs on one character.

The 24 man loot really has been a huge problem ever since they added the upgrades to crafted gear, that gear is so much easier to get and upgrade, there's literally no reason to farm for the 24 man gear. It really is only there for glamour.
Shadowbringers had Boja, that made the big breaks very bearable

Dont increase the tome cap. Just make it so each job has its own "tomestone" and 450 "tomestone" cap. Also, skill speed should be taken out as a buildable stat on pieces and instead jobs should just have their own static gcds. Its a stat that's not only useless a lot of the time but an active detriment.
I know im late to the discussion. But get progression is really slow for a game which revolves arround switching classes "on the spot". I mean look at ShB trailer, is kinda what we are. it should be at least 3 times faster, that means, 3 weekly drops, 3 times the tomestone cap and some closer ilvl relationship between 8 raid, 24 raid, crafted and savage gear, use the damn .5 ilvls instead of steps of 10. Why 3 times faster? because of the 3 roles, now, ofc, some might want to gear 3 DPS classes at the same time, thats ok, but at a minimun should be considering most players, specially those going for the high end, might want to have options -which the whole armorie system revolves arround- and have experience in the 3 main roles as to understand what can and cannot do other players. That would help a lot in the learning experience. Right now XIV gearing works like if this game was a single class character game. And obviously is chocking the playerbase. Is way too grindy/time locking for many players to actually enter the content.

I honestly think a lot of the stats and gearing system in general need a huge overhaul. Gearing and the stats you get is so 1 dimensional that theyre not exciting or fun at all. Same with Materia. I think there does need to a huge overall to Skill speed in general to actually allow for more diverse builds but i think they also need to bring it back as an actual buff too. The jobs have become so monotone and boring with how dumbed down mechanically they have been watered down to that i think a huge stat overhaul would help a lot.

Cant do it with the way the two minute meta shakes out. You want your ogcds to always come up every two minutes for all classes so unless your ogcd haste idea allowed you to get entire extra uses without desynching it would be a dps loss and people would actively avoid it.
Shoutout to MrHappy
Make criterion dungeons drop coffers that have tome gear in them and make 24 man gear upgradable.
Can you post these to Spotify again? Thanks mr frosty.
@30:00 Dungeon gear is for folks who only play MSQ, and you get a free piece at the end because the next part of MSQ is going to have an ilvl requirement that you can't meet without upgrading. If you only play MSQ, and don't raid or do Extremes, it can be very difficult to meet that minimum. I started playing for real late in 5.X, finally getting current in 5.5, and I got stalled when it came time to do The Heroes Gauntlet because the relic gear and free loot that you get just from progressing MSQ wasn't enough to meet the 460 requirement on its own. Fortunately I had enough gil at the time to just buy the crafted gear at the time, but if someone didn't have that, they'd need to run Anamnesis Anyder to get enough to catch up. Dungeon Gear isn't very high ilvl, but it is high enough that you can meet the requirement for the next dungeon after it. For example, Fell Court drops 595 gear, and Lapis has a 590 minimum. If a player only does MSQ, they'll need to run Fell Court a few times to get the gear they need. The guaranteed drops speed that process up. Now Lapis drops 605, so I'm willing to bet the next MSQ dungeon we get is going to require 600 ilvl to enter.
Criterion should be like M+ for ppl that doesn't have time to be there 3 days a week with same rooster every week for savage.
I ALREADY SUGGESTED MELDING TO A GEARSET/CHARACTER/JOB STONE!!!
due to balancing, they won't add gear with skill potency increases, or too many BIS types (nor probably change the 2 min buffs anymore)
I do agree with Xeno about having alliance raid gear not savage equivalent. Sure, the content has been out for three and a half months I think people of both the casual and the hardcore should be given some leeway to having their gear upgraded right away. Instead of waiting for x amount of weeks. The fact alone we have NINETEEN jobs but not enough to gear them is just outdated too. (MrHap's point as well) It is possible to enjoy the game with vertical and horizontal progression it is just a matter of how to keep the flavor interested. Side note: I don't know if anyone remembered but during one of their long stream they had Sakaguchi guest in there and he mentions about the drop rate for the artifacts being abysmally low. If there was any way to revisit it Yoshi-P mentioned that he will talk to his devs about it.
As someone who is in the group of people where its taking months to get through p5-8s to get my BiS. Please open it up. It'd be fun to play and get experience with my Alt jobs. The stuff in PF thats good for practice tend to have pretty high IL reqs.
Happy is my spirit animal after that drink swap ngl
Horizontal progression would be great to allow to gear secondary jobs since they seem to know people play multiple jobs

the only time i've ever used piety ever since the change in shadowbringers is: for savage prog. that's literally it. (healer main btw) - I'll grab a little piety like 500-700 from base and replace the pieces so that my bis has 0 piety cause it's pointless. Even when progging Ex's 24 man or anything that isn't savage or ultimate, it serves 0 purpose. I guess for new players or those that are new to healing it's useful, but quickly will they see that it's a deadweight stat. Honestly- If i just dead heal when progging (aka no attacking, just healing when needed and watching mechanics) I wouldn't need any piety really. It's just nice to have for rezzing and such.
speaking of gear, i think the other big discussion is the stats themselves. Crit is king almost in every case.
Farming leveling dungeons for glam but also to give you an incentive to be there for new players that need to clear MSQ.
Frosty lost control of this rant in the first 5 minutes of this, and I love it. Just sitting there like fucking Kermit the frog, sipping his drink.
You can full gear upgrade in 1 week if you do hunts. you can buy the twines with nuts.
What Happy mentions in XI about needing 15 sets for 1 job is no joke, But what he didn't mention is the gear you sawpped to to cast "Fire" the gear the increases fire damage is ilvl 90 when gear is 630 so while casting fire your def, and other stats are garbage. Not so much a problem in XI anymore cause the gear that enhances job ability's is the same ilvl as current gear but that took them way too long
A good show but one thing I want to add is the stats for alliance raid gear are always worse than their tome/savage counterparts so even if they were the same ilvl they'd still be only catch up gear. Meaning there's extra-no-reason for that shit to be ten below the raid tier. It's not only outdated, it was never indated.
14:00 - the rant about people who feel entitled to high end gear. Its honestly just a ego thing. Its the same mindset of having the rarest achievement, or mount, or minion, or whatever collectable a player can get in the game. I do agree that players should not feel gatekept from trying challenging content due to gear restrictions. 15:27 - The gear should be easy enough for at least 5 jobs. I only mention 5 jobs is because there is 5 roles in the game right now. Tank, Healer, Melee, Physical Range, and Magical Range DPS. I know melee shares 3 types of gear; but nowdays with the announcement of Viper: each gearset for melee will have two jobs it can work with. I know not everyone plays all 5 roles, so it still allows wiggle room for gear regardless of choice. That way everyone can flex if by chance there is a need for it during prog. I dunno if its a good idea, but I figured that should be the bare minimum.
4 player dungeons have the best glam for combat classes.
240 episodes later and its still great watching xeno rant to frosty.
