Modlite: PLHv2 vs. OKW

This video compares the PLHv2, and OKW from modlite. The PLHv2 is placed on an 18350 body with a Surefire DS00 waterproof switch, while the OKW is placed on an 18650 body with Modlite tail cap. According to modlite, 18650 and 18350 battery compatible hosts produce equal output from either head, respectively, with runtime being the only difference.
The OKW is rated at 680 lumens and 69,000 candela/lux. The PLHv2 is rated at 1,350 lumens, and 54,000 candela/lux.
Both light heads used were of the new "slim" form factor, and featured black bezel retaining rings. Some of the first "slim" design heads used a shiny/silver bezel insert.

I got both. I was shocked when I went and tested them... the plhv2 had A LOT more spill and almost the same throw to me. I had to go back and forth between the two a couple times in order to tell that the okw had more throw. It was almost negligible to me. Plhv2 for the win imo. Very impressed Edit: I was about 150 yards away from the trees I was looking into. Backed it up to 200 yards and it still didn’t seem like a big difference in throw .

Yeah it’s a nice beam. My mch is almost the same as the PLHV2 and the field is very long and hills and it’s foggy so I went with more candela for hunting. But the PLHV2 is better all around

Thank you for making such a straightforward and helpful video! Since the OKW has been out for longer, its reputation precedes it, but it really does look like ModLight is giving good advice as the PLHv2 being the best for most end-users, at least for me when I get one.

Got the plhv2 when it first came out. Currently use it for coyote hunting at night. Works great for me. OKW from what I seen didn't have a big enough hot spot for what I needed. Still thinking about just picking up the okw head though to try it out at least.

I ordered a PLHv2. Every video I see I prefer the PLH beam pattern for my area. If I was to shine out across the road to the tree line, neighbors house and fields it will give me better coverage with plenty of throw. If I had 200 yards to the nearest tree line or neighbors house I would prefer the OKW.

@@Markyymark662 definitely the PLH for handheld though honestly it might be “too much” light for everyday flashlight use (I have a small rechargeable streamlight macrostream that I use as my daily pocket flashlight and have a TLR-7A on a Glock 19 that I carry daily). I’ve never used my OKW or PLH that way so I can’t say for certain that it wouldn’t work out.

Yes! I didnt mean for edc, At work I carry a fenix ld30, I had to charge my micro stream every single night, I charge this fenix every 2 weeks, and it can be bright as shit if I need that… but I was meaning for a handheld, like going to the mall and for shining the green field after dark after hunting or during hunting whatever. I just ordered a okw 18650 modlite handheld. I have a cloud mch w/ high candela head with thrym for carrying with my pistol for self defense but it dims down real quick so wouldn’t be good for deer hunting and shining the green field and such, and sense the PLHV2 is very similar to the overrated mch high candela I figured I would go with the okw for more throw than my mch instead of having the same beam, for long field the more candela the better. Can’t tell a difference in my mch and my brothers PLHV2

If we are talking purely self defense purposes, is the OKW noticeably more blinding? Or do both do the trick? Edit: So I went ahead and bought the OKW. I test fired it at a friendly guinea pig to get some feedback. They are now blind.

Does the 18650 body and battery change anything? I have a honey badger by q and q has a specific light mount for these models but i see that the 18650 body fits both v2 and okw so would that change both or is the light dynamics the same just brighter?

Seems to be a good light. But how would you compare it to the streamlight protac HLX. It's the lights I have mounted on a ar9 carbine used as my primary home defensive weapon. And on a ar15 carbine which is my main defensive weapon for outdoor defensive or indoor defensive situations. At the distances I'm likely to have to engage hostile targets. The 1000 lumens with 18000 candela is sufficient to display hostile targets and identify potential threats. I've been very pleased at the performance of both lights for their intended roles. And.as I use the laser to cowitness my dot scope on the ar9 carbine and the magnifier and dot scope on my ar15. I've been pleased with the.preformance on both weapons. Both are fast on target and give great precise shot placement. I did mount the cloud defensive light control mount on both. And it was the best decision I could have made. And at the out door range I use the laser shows bright on the red steel target. I'm completely happy with my set up on both weapons. And I'm useing a Bushnell older model acog styled red or green thophy scope on the ar9. And a vortex sparc2 dot scope and magnifier on my ar15 carbine. And the laser shows up well useing the sparc2. And both are extremely fast on target. Great combinations on both weapons. I've also mounted tlr8 a flex weapons lights on a glock 19 and one on a glock 23 and one on a sig 320c. And for use on a defensive handgun they preform well. To be honest they are great handgun lights for defensive use or duty use. And by changing out the high switch for the included low switch it made a good handgun mounted light into a great mounted light for my use. And I consider a weapon mounted light a necessity for low light or no light situations for positive threat identification. But training in the use of lights is essential to understand the proper tactical use of weapons mounted lights. To avoid misuseing them and making yourself a target.

I asked Modlite the same thing and they told me that since their lights aren’t direct drive a higher current battery would have no effect. Thanks for the vid again.
