Thank you for watching Josh. I cringe when I see some of the methods in these older videos. There would be other ways that you could do this, and although this one has a little more tedium when it comes to openings, it also probably provides the most control at a component level. For continuous pattern horizontal sweeps or reveals, like Z bars in a ACM panel wall, I'd probably rely more heavily on the built in sweeps and reveal in the wall type properties.

Great tutorial, thanks! Is there a way to create the same effect on different types of surfaces, like floors or roofs? E.g. make vertical profiles that go from the walls up on the roof?

There's a bunch of ways, beam systems, curtain walls, sloped glazing are all system families than you can create profiles for in order to achieve this extra detail. For instance, a standing seam roof could be created with a sloped glazing family if you create mullion profiles to look like the seams. You simply lay this on top of another roof that represents the rest of the structure. Also, explore in-place modeling, from the Component panel, select Model In Place. It is probably better to create many forms within one in place component, rather than make one and then copy it. If something needs to repeat, it's better to create a family for it. Key family category though is profiles, then set up the system families.

This was great! I am using this technique to create a vertical metal cladding .. any advice on this? Im curious about how the layers would work with this technique ( I did the first way with the sweep) how to attach this wall to a steel frame and gypsum board... I guess I need advice on how to build the walls after the profiles are done.. not sure if im making sense! maybe you could steer me in the right direction THANKS!

You can build the wall out to the z girts or channels, using z girt profiles built into the wall. You'll need to expose the preview of the wall section in the edit structure menu. For the cladding, I'd do this as in place sweeps, just be sure to use the Offset from wall parameter to get the lap correct for your cladding profile. The ends, inside and outside corners will require flashing profiles to really acheive the desired effect, but the outcome looks pretty slick when you get it right. The reason you model the cladding as in place components per wall is so you can remove the geometry with a void extrusion. Hope that helps!

that was really great! i managed to attach timber strips....when i click on my wall, the one with the new strips and click edit type and look at the properties window the new strips are not included.....can you help with that? William

William, with this method, you wouldn't see anything related to the strips in the wall properties. These would be two separate systems, a wall and an array of a sweep. If you need a wall with vertical differentiation on the surface, using a curtain wall might be a better option. It depends on how much you have to do.If it were a house, I'd probably do it the way I'm showing here. On a large scale project, you may want to explore other options like curtain wall with a set vertical spacing parameter in the Type settings.

Do you know if it is possible to do this to the roof? I know there is no simple 'Roof Sweep' .. Ive tried to model in place with a sweep but it wont allow to array from that across the roof. Thanks

Hey James, sorry it's taken so long for a response, I think what I'd do for a standing seam roof is create a fascia profile for that particular detail, and then host it to a model line. You can then create an array of the model line and the fascia sweep, and then hide the lines using a sub-category control through visibility graphics for that view. If you mean sweeping around the perimeter of the roof, you could use the In-Place component sweet, it allows for multiple planes in a single sweep, where the wall sweeps and reveals are always vertical and horizontal and don't allow for angles or hosting to a roof.

It works great but I have error (could not create wall sweep. fail to cut out) when it come windows and doors. some works and some don't.

If you end the sweep command and select the sweep, there is a Modify Returns option that appears in the Modify menu, if it's vertical, it will depend on what wall join you use, Butt joints aren't really helpful in this case unless you have a special sweep profile family, but if you use Mitre joints you'll be able to bring them right to the end of both walls.

does it work for horizontal louvers as well?

You could use this tool for louvres, but I think you should experiment with a defined curtain wall type though first. Your outside mullions would be typical, the horizontal mullions could be the blades of the mullions, set on an angle and then spaced very closely together, and change the panel to the Empty System Panel. Also, ensure that Automatic Embed is selected in the Curtain Wall type properties so whatever curtain wall you draw it remove that geometry from the hosting wall. That way it is correct in section and in elevation. Curtain walls are good for lots of little tricks like glass railing as well. You could make a stretching louvre family, but then you'd require an array for the blades, too complex in my opinion if there's a system family that would do the trick.

A door or window will have an opening built in to it, so this should essentially remove a sweep or reveal to the extents of the door or windows opening. If you had a trim board to the outside of the door opening however, the sweeps would need to be manually adjusted, but I believe the "Trim/Extend to Multiple Objects" modify tool would probably make short work of it.

You do you hombre, I use both! Fortunately, Revit is bilingual so if you type in my non-sensical imperial values in your metric file, you'll still get what you're after. :p

It probably did, you need to edit the Type Properties of the sweep or reveal to use the profile that you created or modified. If you don't see it in the list, chances are the Profile Usage parameter in the profile family isn't set to Reveal or Sweep. You can find this in the instance parameters of the Profile family.

You need to locate the family from the Families categories in your Project Browser, and open it. It should be listed under Profiles...Open that family that you want to use, and on the left hand side in the Properties panel, you should see a parameter called Profile Usage, but it's from within the Family Editor. You should see the Create tab first in the ribbon, not Architecture. You won't be able to change this from the project environment.

Odd, it should be in the list when you change the Profile parameter in the sweep or reveal. You may have to contact your local reseller to have them take a look. Hard to troubleshoot without seeing the files.
