This channel will be dedicated to design technology, principles and execution of BIM, an arcane form of geomancy known only to the most initiated sorcerers. We'll explore BIM through it's most viable and commonly known tools, Autodesk applications. Also...if you feel the need to post links to your videos in my comments section, once is enough, anymore than that and you'll find yourself with no voice on my channel. For any trolls out there littering in mine or anyone else's channel, we BIM here, maybe clean your room, groom yourself and do your laundry. There are better things to do in life than write negative or whiny comments on videos you can't or won't create.
But...if you're anything like me...you see something that's been created and immediately wonder "how did they do it? How was it designed?" Well people, the answer is; magic.

Hi guy I'm having a problem using the FamilyType.ByGeometry node, and more specifically the "Category" entry. I want to create a conceptual mass (link from my templatePath) and the associated category is "Mass". However, when I launch my script, Dynamo reports the following problem: "FamilyType.ByGeometry operation failed. Category with name Mass not found". I should point out that I'm launching the Dynamo plugin from a conceptual Volume Family window. Do you know where this error could be coming from?
I'd like to say yes dawg, but I have no clue. Dynamo is not my jam.
watching this on my lunch break so my boss doesn’t think I’m completely incapable !
Kudos to your efforts, we've all been there!!
legend thanks for sharing!
I've got a bunch of placeholder sheets in my sheet index. Can I get them off my schedule but not delete them?
if they are placeholder sheets, then at the top of your ribbon on the far right, you will see an option to Show, Isolate or Hide Placeholders. Simple to apply, but simple for one of your colleagues to changes. This is why I recommend sheeted SCHEDULE IN UPPER CASE, and 'Model Management' schedule in Camel Case or better yet, separate them with a Browser Organization option. :)
@@TravisVanClieafBIM Awesome. Tip of the day. Yeee!
"add data cell" isnt doing anything that I can see
nevermind... this program is so convoluted... It was copying some other sheet not displaying in my sheet index.
If you check your Sorting/Grouping Tab is Itemize All Instances checked?
@user-nx3gr3qe4y it is not for people looking for the quick and easy, I agree. But then...neither is this industry! As convoluted as it is, it's equally as versatile and powerful! Good luck!
@@TravisVanClieafBIM THANK YOU FOR YOUR QUICK RESPONSE. WE USE A GENERIC NUMBER COLUMN WITH A FILTER TO SORT OUR SHEET INDEX TO OUR LIKING. WHEN I "ADDED A DATA ROW" IT WAS ADDING A ROW WITH NO DATA IN THE SORTING COLUMN SO IT WASNT SHOWING IN THE SPECIFIC INDEX I WAS WORKING IN. SO I HAD TO DELETE MY FILTER SO THEY WOULD SHOW, GIVE THEM A NUMBER, THEN RECREATE MY FILITER.
So far Revit is not impressing me. Its certainly not quick.
For anyone else like me looking for it, the pattern for 1/3 bond king size brick is: ;%TYPE=MODEL 0, 0, 0, 0, 3 90, 0, 0, 0, 10, 3, -3 90, 6.66, 3, 0, 10, 3, -3
How do you save the notepad file to a .pat file after making the modifications?
Thank You Travis for the video!
where I’d record one track of the soft and than use a second Edison to record scrubbing through the soft to mimic a wave table.
I can,t understand.can you mark down the point ‘s number on pattern step by step.thx a lot
nice
How can I export to dwfx from revit with layers, a floorplan with shading? Thank you
We are able to select Walls, Floors and Columns. But Beams and other structural Framing elements are not be able to select and copy in copy monitor. Please help
Yugal, these elements are not eligible to be copy/monitored. The Copy/Monitor process is meant to communicate common elements between two models. Structural discipline would add these elements to their model after Copy/Monitoring the primary elements of the building envelope, ie grids, levels, floors, walls, roof. (Architecturally, these should be provided). IF you have a model that you simply want to pull these items out of, you can TAB select the specific items and copy them in thru your clipboard. Or...if you're friendly with the person you're getting the model from, you can ask them to link out those specific elements so you can link them in, and bind the link. Then these elements would simply be in a group, but in your model where they ought to be. Hope this helps.
Great presentation. Can you make any penetrations through the metal decking the way you have modeled it? Can you attach any lighting to it?
I'm not sure what sort of family would provide the penetration, a shaft tool works for floors and ceilings, roof, but this ends up being Roof w/ subcategory Fascia. My questions is, does it matter? If you're going to go the distance of clash detecting this, you could simply set it as a reviewed item, but the intent for this hack is a method to show articulation. Regarding the lighting, it would depend on the hosting specification of the lighting family. A face based lighting family I would imagine work fine on this, but my recommendation if I was working with an electrical engineer would not to be at the mercy of an architectural model and would try to have my own hosted ceilings or reference planes to ensure my fixtures do not become unassociated.
how to make extension at stringer bottom? thanks
For some reason when I go to click the detail lines nothing happens? Please advise.
If you are in fact using detail lines, this is where you went wrong. You need to do these with model lines, which are a 3D physical element, visible in a 3D View.
You meant to pick prefix, not suffix, both times
It works great but I have error (could not create wall sweep. fail to cut out) when it come windows and doors. some works and some don't.
Thank you so much, it really helps a lot! But I'm still trying to create the same tile that I created in horizontal direction, now in vertical direction and I can't do that right yet. Could you help please??
How to colour this wall
Thank You
FYI: When you want to type 3' 10" you can just type 3 spacebar 10. You don't have to type ' or "
Excellent video. It helps me too much. Thanks
Hello sir I just want to ask if what are the disadvantage and advantage of using copy monitor I just want to ask also if it has a certain rules for central files or coordinate files.
hello, when i use the fascia in the project, it appears with a vertical offset. Does this have to do with the lines of reference when creating the fascia? if yes how to correct the problem? thank you !
good explanation & information , one question , how do u change type of floor for each room individually ?
Hi Omar, you wouldn't really have a different floor in most cases, you might have a different floor finish. If this is the case, you would model a structural floor that is your framing type and subfloor, and then in each room you can create smaller separate floors that span between walls, which only consists of tile or carpet or whatever. Often times it's two different designer specifying these two different things, ie architect spec's floor, interior design spec floor finish.
great video. really helpful. thanks. p.s. just one question: if we want to do with an RCC structure, how to make it for slab and beam?
Can you explain what you mean by RCC? These conceptual massing tools although they can compliment structural design, at this stage aren't really what we're relying on them for. This series was more or less to show how you can get quick feedback loops for gross floor areas and modify floor plates using the mass form. I could maybe tell you a little more about post and beam structure in Revit, but I'm not sure I understand your question.
Hi. What If I want to use 2 angles, top and bottom chords? What is the way to include this type of elements
create a structural framing family using the beams and bracing rft, and create it so it has two angle profiles mirrored and sweeping the centre left/right reference plane.
@@TravisVanClieafBIM thank you
Travis, Been 4 years bro, where's that next video. This one got me started, Thanks!
Fair enough bud, I never got around to it before I moved on from this gig. yeah Formit has come a long way since this video, and my career took another turn, but look to tobias Hathorn or the actual Autodesk page for Formit..."ots of good resources out there. Thanks for watching anyway!
this is very helpful, thank you.
kindly send me this revit file . [email protected]
Hi, did you get the file? can you give me?
NICE VIDEO
Thanks Travis, so much better than Autodesk rants.
Wow thanx - also 16 May its me birthday-ha!!

Bahh I only came here for the sloped floor thing.
I have a first and second floor plan which are not at al close to each other. How do I align the two so it looks like an actual house?
turn the Underlay level in your 1st level floor plan view to 2nd Level, in the 2nd level, select everything and type GP to create a group of your second level. In the 1st Level floor plan view, select the group and use a common point to move the 2nd level to the1st.You should see the elements from the level above as halftone grey. Grouping everything ensure it all comes together, I'd ungroup the 2nd level after though.
how can I put a sweep at a wall ends? Thank you so much for the tutorial :)
If you end the sweep command and select the sweep, there is a Modify Returns option that appears in the Modify menu, if it's vertical, it will depend on what wall join you use, Butt joints aren't really helpful in this case unless you have a special sweep profile family, but if you use Mitre joints you'll be able to bring them right to the end of both walls.
Interesting stuff! I'm not familiar with Revit , so I was wondering if I can implements this with java ?
I'm not sure, I have no experience with Java but you may want to look into Dynamo. It's a good way of unlocking the API from an open source platform.
Very cool, I suppose with this approach you would have to run your model lines around windows and doors?
You would need to be pretty meticulous with the model lines, but if you're trying to sell a vision, you could do this in just the areas where you're creating 3D views. I've seen people use a material with a very high level bump map and achieve a nice comparable result.
THANK YOU!
You're most welcome Katerine!
Hi, would you please made us further tutorial about truss connection, if there are a truss family we've made earlier then how to fix the gap of the connection/joint within steel member (diagonal/vertical) to top/bottom chord?
Hey dude, it looks like you're a dude from your profile pic. If not, dudette or whatever you go by, I have no recording software, so my tutorials are on hold for the time being. What you're seeing is the cutback of the steel member for a connection. In this situation, if you have a welded connection, you need to grab the blue grips (arrows) and bring them into the connected members. You'll see they overlap and look incorrect, so you apply the 'Notch' or 'Cope' tool. It's in the Modify tab, on the far left. This will apply a Notch distance parameter, which it typically defaults to 1" or 20mm. If you want welded connections for a truss, you can create a global parameter for Notch distance, set it to 0 and then apply this value to all the instances when you are done notching all the members. Structural framing. So dope, so precise, so damn persnickity. Good luck.
Travis Van Clieaf Hi Travis... Okay, i have got the solution on my issue thru autodesk forum on earlier day. Anyway, that’s actually not me myself, the profile picture is a former comedian actor who already gone away... i just feel he’s awesome and funny to imitate bruce lee in this pose style. Lol :)
I was gonna say maybe stick with the martial arts. BIM isn't good for your waist line.
Great tutorial, thanks! Is there a way to create the same effect on different types of surfaces, like floors or roofs? E.g. make vertical profiles that go from the walls up on the roof?
There's a bunch of ways, beam systems, curtain walls, sloped glazing are all system families than you can create profiles for in order to achieve this extra detail. For instance, a standing seam roof could be created with a sloped glazing family if you create mullion profiles to look like the seams. You simply lay this on top of another roof that represents the rest of the structure. Also, explore in-place modeling, from the Component panel, select Model In Place. It is probably better to create many forms within one in place component, rather than make one and then copy it. If something needs to repeat, it's better to create a family for it. Key family category though is profiles, then set up the system families.
Thank you, my first trying it and it was wonderful
many thanks, problem solved....
i cant export type properties alone with the elements in revit.. do u have any suggestion??? \
Are the parameters you are trying to export shared or built in parameters? Have you looked at Navisworks? DWFx is more of a graphic viewer, if you're looking to track the type parameters of elements, investigate exporting to database options like Navisworks, Excel and Dynamo. DWFx is good for mark up, presentation and review, but it sounds like you're looking more for quantification. Is this the case?
how to do you measure or draw precise angles? I did not see the option to do that
that was really great! i managed to attach timber strips....when i click on my wall, the one with the new strips and click edit type and look at the properties window the new strips are not included.....can you help with that? William
William, with this method, you wouldn't see anything related to the strips in the wall properties. These would be two separate systems, a wall and an array of a sweep. If you need a wall with vertical differentiation on the surface, using a curtain wall might be a better option. It depends on how much you have to do.If it were a house, I'd probably do it the way I'm showing here. On a large scale project, you may want to explore other options like curtain wall with a set vertical spacing parameter in the Type settings.
Hi, Travis. Thanks for nice tutorial. Could you, please, tell me how you created the profiled surface on the facades? I'm struggling to create them for the roof..
There's a number of ways you could achieve this. One would be to create a curtain wall profile and use it on a secondary roof using the Sloped Glazing roof system family. The profile of the curtain wall mullion would actually be the standing seam and the panel portion would act as the flat portion of the metal cladding. So this secondary roof would simply act as the cladding for a structural roof beneath it. You could do this as well with a sloped Beam System employing a structural framing profile. The simplest way would be an In Place component with a sketched profile and then simply array this across the roof hip. The real ammunition though is the profile itself, and then employing it with the system family you are most comfortable with. Sorry for the delayed response Tamar, I've made some career changes and haven't been posting lately, but hopefully that helps. Thanks for watching!
