Modifying an Aussie Icon! Would Brocky Approve? 🇦🇺 HDT VL Calais Sport Ep 2.
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
On this episode of The Skid Factory we set about modernising an iconic 1980's HDT VL Calais by adding a modern engine management system.
We explain in depth what's required to successfully convert a carburettored engine to modern engine management from fuel system to ignition right down to wiring needs and initial startup.
The ancient Quadrajet Carburettor is being replaced by multi-port fuel injection and an electronic throttle body from an LSA. The distributor is also swapped out for a VT Commodore crank angle sensor so the Haltech Elite 2500 ECU can have full control over the engine.

You, Al, are a master of your trade, not only improving classics with modern componentry but making them beautiful like fine art.
Retromodding is my far and away favourite thing to watch. Love seeing classic cars sprinkled with current gen technology, love it even more when it's done in a way where it's not immediately obvious. The VL Turbo build was great too.

I wholeheartedly think an improvement. Brocky would love that you've invested in this latest tech for such a gorgeous machine.
What's important is the owner is happy.
I got stuck on the ignition 360deg out on a new build for hours 😂 Finally found a forum post that explained what you did and was like duh, added 360 and it started instantly.

Quadrajets are bloody awesome, mine worked flawlessly after i rebuilt it on my 1978 5ltr VB SLE 5 speed manual. The adjustability is fantastic. Starts first time every time in winter, economical...and the glorious sound when those secondaries open up. 🇦🇺

@@johno9507 I like what your saying as there nothing wrong with the Quady or even a Holley if you know how to tune them as they have a amazing fuel metering system if you know how to tune them . Not taking away with what the boys have done as its what is the go these days . Did they wreck a good car by putting EFI on it ? No they havent . I would love to see a decent tuner that knows both set ups and it would show just how good the Quady really is .
You've improved a classic. After spending many hours as a teenager fiddling with the screws on a carburetor trying to get my motorbike to run properly, I'm very happy to be able to make the same changes with a laptop now.
Watching Al talk is like me trying to understand the crazy professor from back to the future. I don't understand but I enjoy watching. The owner would be filled with joy I bet! Good job boys
The beauty of owning a car is you can do whatever you want to it! Purists be damned. Great content boys, keep it up.
A bit of technology makes an old car so much more enjoyable to drive, and that's why I have one,to drive it.
Can't remember Brocky being a car collector but I do remember him being a modifier in search of performance.
Love the squeaks while hammering 😂😂
you put it in the moonlight! I met Mr Brock on the set of a Holden add back in the day. Hung out all day. At lunch he hung with the crew and caterers and was on first name terms with everyone. Even sat on an Eski to eat and when offered a chair ..." No thanks mate, you're right " From the way he spoke about his daily at the time, I would think he'd approve of mods that improve and make a vehicle easier to use/get the most from. Obviously I cant"t speak for someone else , but that's my two cents.
As long as you keep Brock's "Magic Energy Crystal" in the car who cares. If it keeps the car on the road, good on you!
Improved it, good to see people still moding classic cars, it will run better and so on 👌🏼
Improved it. EFI and ECU's improve any engine. No water in distributor issues, no blocked jets or gunked up carbs, acurrate time etc all make an engine more user friendly.
it's 2023 ! up grading it makes it both respect the past but keeps it relevant ! Good job Al !🧔♀
I think that is the best way of keeping engines like this running
Great stuff PB would approve the VL will run like a dream now...
By making it far more reliable & increasing its longevity, you definitely improved it. It will now able to be enjoyed by many more people for years to come.
Improved it for sure. New tech can do wonders on old school engines
Personally I think you've done a great job trying to keep it original.... I reckon to each their own
Improvement. I've been researching a TBI upgrade for my '75 GMC truck, trying to keep the original engine bay looks over the efficiency of MPI. Mostly for increased fun time, less downtime, and just to bump up the modern jump in and go factor in a classic.

Biiiiiiig improvement, I can't believe how snappy it revs with that set up, very impressive!
Undeniably an improvement. Nothing too radical, just making use of better parts and tech
As you guys know I’m a VL Calais person and I think you’ve done this old girl a massive favour. If EFI wasn’t better then HSV wouldn’t have done it for the “Walkinshaw” VL
Note to the editor: The squeaky toy sounds never get old, cracks me up every time lol

Perfect OEM plus deal on a classic to be able to enjoy it more. Well done on the quality of video and sound. It’s right up there now lads 👌🏻
So this is why I watch channels like your's: to find out about stuff like drive by wire throttle bodies that bolt directly on a manifold that used to have a carburetor. If you keep telling me about that kind of junk, I'll keep watching. Cheers.

Love the heater controls......Windscreen, Cowboy boots. Flowing mullet.
I would say even mister Leno (if his opinion is anything to go by) would approve of these upgrades. He doesn't shy away from modifying even the rarest classic to make them more usable. And in the end that's what it's all about right. No use if it's just looking pretty sitting in the garage. personally I'm all for it, would love to do this to a classic one day.
Such a pleasant bloke to listen to, the knowledge is outstanding
Awesome episode. Looking to go efi on my BBC. This just gives me more motivation. Also good to know someone on the coast modifies manifolds 👌

That wiring looks almost as good as my P.C. I built. Love all your hard work and video. 😇🤗 keep it going, always.
This car looks kind of like if US GM made a 4 door Pontiac version of the Chevy Beretta and put a longitudinal V8 in it. Pretty cool! And of course discreetly adding EFI and and electronic is a reasonable addition to a classic. You can always keep the original parts on a shelf if they're really rare.

It's definitely in spirit with what Brock would have done as he was actually involved in the restoration and efi engine swap with a vc hdt. "This is a special one off Brock Commodore built by Peter Brock and Sydney TAFE students as a Street Machine prize in 1999. Using a genuine VC Brock, TAFE and PB updated the car with a striking paint and trim combo, rebuilt the original VC block with later model heads and fuel injection (355 stroker, 400HP), Harrop brakes and Bilstein uprated suspension and added a 4 speed auto. A one off car for the collector. Truely the last true Peter Brock built car ever. Gold Coast car"

As you mentioned, the VL V8 really suffered from the change to ULP, barely able to outrun the same car fitted with a stock RB30E. There's no doubt in my mind that you're making a classic 'better', and improving the driving experience. (Yep, my parents bought a VL Berlina in '86.
