Modifying a Stock 1979 RX7 Fuel Tank for the TRACK - RADX7

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Fuel slosh and External Pumps are problems and noise that I want to be rid of. Took my stock 79' RX7 gas tank and gave it some more RACECAR.

Old Toyota land cruiser tanks have one way baffles for offroading use, basically a bunch of little doors hinged at the top to only let fuel in the area with the pickup but the doors would close when the fuel would try to flow away from the pickup. If you still have fuel slosh issues look into door style baffles. 1988 fj62 landcruiser is the tank I saw it in. Might be worth checking out

Same style 'trap door' baffles in oil sump pickup setups that you'd weld in an oil pan on my m5x/ s5x BMW engines that I built. Turner and Bimmerworld sell similar ones that are a few weld in pieces with the solid hinges to keep the oil near the pickup strainer. Por-15 works great for this type of application as it adheres and treats 'seasoned' metal much better than clean/ new steel. Tank looks great👍

By the time you read this comment it will probably be to late but if I was doing this I would add one way baffles (cover the holes with sheet metal on a hinges) and seal the bottoms of the baffles better, that way gas can easily come in but gets trapped in the chamber with the pump

If your going to weld fuel tanks you need to nutrilise the gases, you run a hose from your carsexhaust system in the tank and run the car for 15 to 20 minutes, this will de-activate the gases , that's how boat builders fix tanks built in to boats . Much safer

I'm thinking EFI may be my next adventure, but I wanted to learn the ins and outs of carbs first. I picked up a 42DCOE that I'm trying to mate to my stock port 12A. I know you've done a similar setup before, could you show how your throttle linkage and vacuum advance was set up?

More great content… thanks!!! Gotta say though…. If it’s worth doing…. It’s worth doing right. I hope you don’t have to rebaffle after all that work. 😬

We have 2 1983-85 RX7s with a fuel cell with a baffle box and foam in the cell in one and the other a stock tank. We have the stock carbs and get fuel starvation issue on long sweeping corners when taken at speed. We run these in the 24 Hours of Lemons at Sonoma Raceway and see this problem the most in the turn 6 (The Carousell) which we take at ~65 mph and sometimes turn7. What are you doing to solve carb issues? We think the centrifugal force locks the needle valves. Oh we see this if the tanks are full or not.

Use exhaust from a running car to purge the oxygen from the tank while cutting or welding fuel tanks and avoid blowing yourself up 😁

Yep. Can confirm this as I have repaired many a fuel tank. But be careful. It can be difficult to tell if you’ve purged all the fuel as the exhaust smell can mask any fuel fumes you may still have in the tank.

And also. We would often tape a blow torch to a broom handle and stick it in the tank before we started welding. Sometimes there would be some left over fuel. The blow torch would burn that off and you’d be a safe distance away. Almost.

hey bro, on my centre iron of my 12a tallport, theres a rectangle under the intake ports, can you confirm filling this hole with metal filler won't cause any problems.... just wanna be sure... think my issue is i haven't sealed of the factory coolant ports on the housings properly...

also my fuel gauge stopped working.. im thinking it would have something to do with the float in the tank.. any idea on a fix?

Since the stock rack is a tight fit, it's difficult to fit anything other than a stock tank under there. Pacperformance have a $2400 custom fuel cell available (yikes), or an in cabin generic cell could work, but then you would need to build some sort of rear firewall. Modifying the stock tank is really a better option.
