MODiFiEDZ Wicked Edge Sharpener Tips & Tricks. How to Clean, Lube & Protect

Ойын-сауық

So you've spent $400 on a knife sharpener or your thinking about it, you want to protect your investment & make sure it's operating at it's fullest potential right.
Here are some things I've been trying out through trial & error. This is the best sharpener on the market in my opinion & like so many of the best things out there, there are some things that have room for improvement.
I would like to see some improved tolerances of the u joints & the rod inside the stones, there is a lot of play that needs to be reduced.
Just remember to dri-lube your u joints & get the metal shavings off of your diamond stones when your done & this system should be the last thing you buy to sharpen a knife.

Great review. I love quality tools and was considering buying this. You are the only one that has shown all the play in the links and rods and i didn't like what i saw. I live in Australia and would have bought this mail order and if it was that sloppy i would have been really pissed off. Thanks for the info i might have a look at the newer model.

After watching this video, it is amazing how much Wicked Edge has improved on the problems you have. Like the bottom screw on mine has a rounded tip from the factory, and a steel inlay on the other side. I got a Pro Pack 1 last week. And so far I am pretty impressed. The results I can get with the 1000 grit and strops, is marginally better than what I can get with a EZE Lap DLX kit, the Spyderco Sharpmaker, and hand strops. But what I really find impressive is how much faster I can work, when I start up sharpening for local chefs and family's again, I expect to be making about 50% more for my time. I have done a lot of these upgrades and they work pretty well, I actually thing I may inlay some magnets into the base. My next steps for upgrades are in the following order, as I have to money to spend: 1200/1600 stones, 60/80 stones, Arm upgrades and angle cube, super fine ceramic, and then I will think of getting a nice big Pelican case for it. One day I may try out the Water Stones even.

U don't need 1200/1600 stones. Just get the micro fine ceramics. (and lapp them) They are all you need after diamonds and before strops. They also clean way easier than the 1200/1600 grit ceramics.

I solved the pivot issue by remaking new feet for the pivot, I made a slide that's tight enough it practically doesn't need a screw

Good vid man. I found that I get a little less sharp edges when I do the up and down technique you use. It could be from the play, but I thought I was from "tear out" or slightly chipping or deforming the edge on the down-stroke. I only use up-strokes after I've established the "burr" and a good profile. Just a thought.

Old post, but some good points, especially on the magnets. I place several neo-mags around the clamp base & beam, makes clean up a snap. But NEVER put grease or oil anywhere on the WE, use the dry film stuff (Dupont makes a super version called "Teflon Non-Stick" which is liquid & dries fast, leaving unbelievable slickness).

I also had that problem with the angle of my sharpening stone. I just superglued a toothpick at the bottom of the pivot. That fixed it pertty well. And I personaly don't hold the stone the way you did because I got a wicked gash from the bottom side of my left wrist to my middle knuckle. That wasn't fun. Never jerk when a blade pierces your skin. Other than that, I do just about everything you do storage/Prep for storage wise. To anyone reading this, Modifiedz isn't just crazy. He's legit.

  • @JVYoung

I added nylon washers in the pivots themselves to eliminate that play. Centerpunch works fiine to remove the pins, make sure you're punching them out in the right direction though.

Just a couple thoughts - use a can of "Air" like I use to clean / blow out the computer - give the ball joints a couple of shots - and if you want practice I went to my church or any near you - you will find a ton of work - People drop off their old knifes and they are not in the best of shape - I have done 2 different churches, with at least 25 each. Those users abuse and that is a kind statement. Every knife was different and all needed to be re-profiled. They will love you for thinking of their need / Big time and they may send you a few prayer for you.

Regarding your rust issue, rust is harder than steel, so by you getting rid of the shavings on your stones it also stops the oxide from imbedding into your knife edge which than spreads like cancer. Good job

BTW, how do your leather strops look? After a bit of use to where they don't leave the residue behind anymore, the leather looks hardly colored by the paste. It's as if almost none of the paste penetrated the leather and it's as if all the paste is worn off. I can't seem to get a mirror edge with 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 100 and then 14, 10, 5, and 3.5 stop progression. Hopefully it's just my stones still breaking in but I can't help but feel like the strops have little or no compound effect.

@Matthew Heffernan The new arms I got have eliminated all the play & I'm getting way sharper edges faster, there's almost no user error with the new arms. They are still working on getting the new guide rod to go with the arms because the angles are incorrect, have to use an angle cube for everything.

Wow. I've done probably 100 knives, always thrown the stones in a box with the sharpener, never cleaned them or the sharpener, and it still works like brand new. Also the sharpener itself is fastened to a thick concrete paver from Lowe's I bought for $2. Amazing how different of a set-up. I've got no play in my joints even being covered in filings for a few years. Everyone should keep in mind that all this isn't really needed even though it makes the system look really nice. I do use a stack of neodymium magnets to catch the bulk of the filings...they work great.

Wicked edge now sells a eraser that you use on the diamond steels and it removes all the debris from the surface. you possibly can use a gum eraser but have not tried that yet.

@draggboy To get a mirror edge you'll need to use 1,000+1500+2000+2500 sandpaper taped to your 1,000 grit stones. Check out my other vids, there long but somewhere in there is me taping sandpaper to my stones to get a mirror polish.

@KennyPowers951 You can find similar VCI on eBay for under $10 for a 5 pack. Or you can spend $75 & get a box of 300. Each pc will protect a 1 cubic foot enclosed space. You can put these anywhere & everywhere. (think tool box & gun safe)

What angle would you use for a KBAR?

  • @spiritwolf8375

I'd go with a 25° angle each side, as with that angle it'd be good for the thickness behind the edge and also have a durable edge for hard use

I got mine at Harbor Freight. Make sure you get a 20% off coupon off the net or many magazines have a coupon in them. I have a dozen of them from Maxim magazine. I think it was about $50 with the 20% off. Let me know if you need a coupon & I'll send you one.
