    I don't understand your comment regarding Man being seen as "good" in modernity and "bad" in post-modernity. Weren't the enlightened thinkers of the opinion that man is fundamentally self-interested and rational? Of course rationality was seen as a good thing but self-interest could be extremely dangerous if not controlled (Hobbesian notion of anarchy...). Madison and Hamilton say in the Federalist Papers "Men are not angels" (and therefore we need strong government with checks and balances).
