Modern Trip Around the World - Fat Quarter Friendly tutorial and pattern

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this Stashin' with Stephanie video, I show you how to take a fat quarter bundle and turn it into a fabulous modernized version of the traditional Trip Around the World Quilt.
To make the quilt you just strip piece your fabrics into a large tube and then cut them apart to create the "around the world" part of the quilt. Then by picking seams in a specific order, you get a cool look of the fabrics spreading out across the quilt. To make it modern, instead of having the fabrics fan out from the center of the quilt, it will fan out from the top left corner.
I used Alison Glass Road Trip for this quilt.
The quilt finishes 52" x 78".

    I love how the color makes this quilt pop. I wish you would have paper patterns though. I would even pay a couple of dollars more. When I download a pattern I can't print in color, and sometimes the file becomes lost. Great video. I could give one little hint though that I learned at a class recently from Jacqueline de Jonge. If your machine turns the bottom seam back when you're sewing pieces together try using a piece of scotch tape on your machine base where it touches the throat plate. It works like a miracle to keep the seam in place. Keep giving us more videos. I learn so very much.

    That is a great tip! And I am planning to print a collection of these patterns at some point. But right now we are sticking to just digital for the Stashin’ with Stephanie patterns. All of my other patterns are available in paper and pdf formats.

    Just a quick heads up: Some longarmers will not quilt tops with pressed open seams. There is not as much strength in a pressed open seam (prior to quilting) and long arms do pull at your quilt top a bit. Ask your longarm quilter first.

    I am a longarmer also and most of the time pressed open seams work fine for me. But, I have been told that there are longarmers out there who won't quilt a top that way. Just seems prudent to make sure it's ok with whatever longarmer one wants to work with.

    I wish I could follow your pattern, I’d buy it in a minute. It just seems too complicated for me. I’ve only made 3 quilts…I think I would have anxiety trying to lay out the fabric properly. I do have a design wall, I guess I will have to do it the old fashioned way, even though I LOVE your pattern! Also, the Kaffe Fassett fabrics. I wanted to use jelly rolls instead of fat quarters. I think your strips might be 3.5 .

    A little bird told me something about strip sewing, to alternate the direction of sewing or after a while the assembled strips start to bow in one direction. So I guess you’d flip it over and stitch back from the other side. It was a jelly roll speed quilt of stripes in that case, so longer seams but similar. Just a thought.

    Make your own ironing board so you can draw a straight line with a sharpie. As you iron the seams open make sure the fabric lines up with the line; therefore your strips remain straight. If this doesn't help, then yes, alternate directions.

    Hi Stephanie, I just purchased the pattern. Without giving anything away I read/reviewed the pattern directions and found that the squares should be same size. However, at the 22:01 mark it appears that the squares are different sizes. Would you please offer some clarity. Thank you.

  • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous

    @QuiltAddictsAnonymous

    4 жыл бұрын

    The squares are all the same size. What you are seeing is what it looks like when three of the four seam allowances are sewn. It makes it look like a rectangle because the final side still needs to be attached. Hope that makes sense.

    Instead of sewing the two big pieces together, cuz its just too much fabric to handle, i cut those pieces the width I need and then sew the strips together. Much easier on my wrists and goes fast.
