    Vintage cards will always increase in value overtime. There are many people who are now in the workforce in their 30's who are starting to get disposable income. This generation remembers the vintage era and the height of pokemon during the first few generations. (Before E-Reader, before Black/White)

    Totally agree with you there. Think only the earlier generations of Pokemon collectors are back in the hobby (WOTC-early ex), I feel like the total disposable income in the hobby would continue to grow as more people from the middle era begin returning.

    @@TCGCollector The reprints are pretty cool as well. Wish I had more insight to buy Evolutions when it came out. I just now purchased the Pokemon Classic Collection in both English and Japanese. (The Japanese set especially looks amazing) The 151 set was pretty good as well. (in terms of games, pokemon Uranium and Pokemon Infinite Evolutions (which I continue to replay on the Steam Deck) have been exceptional.

    You couldn’t be more right. I’m 32, I work HVAC, and It’s always bothered me that my old set got sold in a garage sale when I was a kid….. now years later, I’m out looking for the cleanest vintage cards haha. Its my childhood all over again

    I don't like to think of myself as an investor, I'm a pure collector at heart. I'll admit though, with the community leaning so invesment heavy, it has certainly changed my perception and some of my decision making. I was inspired to add more modern sealed to my collection than I otherwise would have, but I look at it more as a cost "avoidance" than an investment. Anything I'm purchasing now, I plan on holding for 20+ years. The products I purchased are of sets I'd enjoy having in my collection, regardless of what price they are in the future. But I bought them now to be safe, knowing there's a chance they could be way out of my price range at some point in the future. But after collecting enough sealed that I was satisfied with, I realized my heart is definitly with collecting the cards more - so that is where my money will usually be focused. And as a circumstance of how expensive some of the cards are that I'm trying to collect, I can't put as much into modern sealed going forward as I'd like to. If I was investing heavier into modern though, personally I would stick with booster boxes for main sets, and ETB/UPC/bundles of special sets. I think it's safer than trying to predict which specific cards people are going to like the most in the future. It will definitely be interesting to see if the demand can keep up with the rising POP reports years from now, when we've had more sets after this era to compare and compete and spread the wealth. Like you mentioned in the video, it's impossible to know for sure whether this era of cards will stick out to people 20 years from now as a great era, or just another mid-era set that blends in with the rest. The "next hot thing" needs to come out, to really test how these sets will hold up. In terms of the timeframe of sealed modern, my outlook is at least 15 years, because that's when today's generation of kids who grew up with these cards, will likely have nostalgia for their childhood and have some desposable income. The one part of my vintage collection that I'm hopeful could have "investment" potential years from now is my Umbreons. If there's any chance Umbreon becomes "the new Charizard" to the kids who grew up with SWSH, maybe when they are our age, they will want to collect all of the big Umbreon cards. I'm not counting on it though. I think you covered the topic well, and I agree with most of your points. Love the long videos man, always appreciate the content!

    That was super insightful and a very good perspective. You summed it up really well - although a lot of collectors like yourself wouldn't necessary label yourself as an investor, you are trying to make your dollar stretch to hopefully put it back into the hobby. I'm very similar myself as well as I don't look to sell anything within a short timeframe and would hold it but I do like to purchase strategically (ie. get the most value and look for under appreciated cards) to ultimately fulfill my collecting goals. Previously, I tried collecting sealed ETBs/packs but I realized it was just not for me as I much rather put that money into cards. Hence, I almost now exclusively only collect PSA 9s of chase cards as that's my main focus. Really appreciate you for sharing your thoughts, thank you and always appreciate your viewership.

    great vid! What kind of tips do you have for purchasing high value cards to avoid getting scammed?

  • @TCGCollector

    @TCGCollector

    4 ай бұрын

    Thanks as always :). Some of these tips may seem obvious but I think ideally the seller should be reputable (eg known to the community or high feedback on selling platform). Using a secure marketplace platform is important (such as eBay) as the buyer is usually well protected led against scams and it’s pretty easy to file a case if needed. Having to have opened cases as a buyer and have cases opened against me (I was scammed) when selling, I can say that eBay generally sides with the buyers! But for sure using eBay, if you do receive a fake card or the seller didn’t ship it out to you, you can start a case fairly easily. If you’re not using eBay or doing private purchases, PayPal goods and services should be used as it protects you from scams (do not use PayPal friends and family)! Also, I think if you’re paying for anything, it’s best to use credit cards as you can always do a “chargeback” in the case of a scam so it protects yourself better than using other forms of payment. Lastly, if it’s a graded card purchase, I would always look up the certification and try to also see if this copy has a sale history. Sometimes scammers might use the same image of a card or cert number so it’s good to verify. There are times where the PSA website would display a card as “stolen or has a warning” associated with a cert number. Let me know if you have more questions but that’s all I can think of on the top of my head!

    The main thing that worries me when it comes to the cards specifically is the difference jn the generations they released too. Yes in the 90s we had the game boy games first and then the tcg follwed but it was its own comoletely different phenomenon. The gamebiy games introduced us to the cards but they both held their own. Today kids know the games first and foremost and most have no interest in playibg the card version. Yes playibg tcg tournaments is still huge but i feel a lot of them are still old enough that the originals played a role in their desire to do so today. Im aware kids still buy the vards and even compete jn tournaments but its nothing like we did in 99 or the early 2000s. This is what makes me hesitent to invest in the cards (newer era cards) i have a feeling that the main collectors of them will still be our older generation not the generation they released to. I just feel like that demand will not be there as it is today. They dont care as much about the cards they care about the switch games and pokemon go and all because bith were not as equally popular to them.

    Agree with you - aside from more “rare” modern cards, I don’t really think it will be the same as the older generations. I may be biased but to echo what other people say, base set and wotc will always be the first set. I’m not super confident that the newer generations today will be as appealing to newer collectors in the future or hold its popularity.

    @@TCGCollector yeah i just don't believe it's going to go how everyone is projecting it will. I mean the original cards were over produced due to the rise in popularity but so many were ruined before they became valuable and rare. Now everything is getting so over produced even sets that are no longer in print they were still massively over produced to a community which now sleeves every single card they get immediately. Even the etb's and stuff every person is saying to buy this or that and now everyone has the same boxes or multiples so who's going to need to purchase that if everyone who desperately wanted it easily already got them? That's where the next generations comes into play and besides a few who get into later on I just don't see the demand and even then so many people bought these over produced boxes that even then I don't think it will be too hard to get one years from now lol there's guys with 10 boxes of certain sets. And if it does work sadly all that business plan is "I'm going to hoard the hell out of this now so hopefully later kids who liked it now will then have to pay me an absurd amount of money to get it back" and that just seems shitty to do

    I don't collect vintage cards. I have good and bad memories about them. The bad, all my cards were stolen back in the day. Collection at least worth around 100k+ today. Something I won't sell. So now, I collect newer set or card I never had before.
