Modern mastering & re-mastering are saving music: The audiophile contribution

Музыка

In a prior video I discussed the issues and possible solutions related to the negative aspects of the mainstream mastering and re-mastering process. Those who do things correctly felt forgotten, hence this video to highlight the positive aspects of these processes and the contribution of the audiophile sector.

Joe Harley is not a mastering engineer, he's a producer. Kevin Gray is the mastering engineer

Just to be clear, I watched your video a couple of weeks ago on the various companies making records from the analog tapes. After watching your video, I ordered five records from Rhino records. I received them yesterday. So you didn’t say anything bad. I don’t know why they got sensitive. you did a great job as always. They should be thanking you. Your channel is the best on youtube for analog and audiophile topics. I don’t think you sounded harsh toward any of the record companies. you just gave your preferences. I actually am NOT a fan of analogue productions. I think their records for the most part, as terrible. They’re super clean, but hyper detailed and have all of the soul sucked out of them. So I don’t agree with you on that, and that’s ok. It’s all subjective. I think your viewers are capable of making their own decisions. Tell Joe Harley to take it easy. You definitely were not bashing anyone. I prefer original pressings 99% of the time. Something about them. They just have more life and soul in them. You made a great video on some of the companies doing great work and I ordered from the ones I was unfamiliar with. It was an excellent video. Please do more. Please do one on all of the companies doing 100% analog from masters to the record. These companies should be highlighted. I don’t care if it’s “audiophile” grade. I will be the judge of that. I think they’re best when they leave them alone as much as possible. The remasters rarely please me. There is something exaggerated in their sound. It’s too closely aligned with contemporary ideas of good sound. It’s just not as pure and lively as the original. Some of the best new releases on vinyl are the ones that just get out of the way and make new releases from the analog master tapes. I am looking forward to listening to these rhino records I just got. I’ll let you know! Keep doing what you’re doing. We appreciate you very much. Wishing you the best from NYC!

If I may add to your excellent comments please... One recent process where I really agree that it seems that many times they seem to 'lose' something is in some of the recent Abbey Road 1/2 speed remasters. For example, my early 1980 Kevin Gray mastered Who: Tommy was quite a bit better than the recent Abbey Road pressing. Like you say, it just seemed to be lacking the presence and dimension of the earlier analog pressing. One thing that George Bordon a long time engineer mentioned, which I think is a good point, is that with Abbey Road's 1/2 speed process he feels that they do too many conversions from one format to another in order to do their 'improvements' He says that many times they capture it in the digital realm, then edit it in the analog realm, and then convert it to the digital realm to use various sophisticated software treatments to De-'S' for example, and then later revert back to the analog realom to press the vinyl. I think he may have a very good point there. Like you mentioned above, the 'Less' they do to it, probably the better 😊

Thanks, agree with your comments 100%, on the original pressings (and early repressings too) especially. "They just have more life and soul"... that's it, you can feel it. If the price is acceptable, I found definitely more rewarding looking to records issued before 1980/85. Just grabbed an early 70s repressing of Jethro's "This was" and it is exactly the summary of all these words.

Thank you very much for your nice and interesting comment. Taking notes here! I love OGs don’t get me wrong, but in several cases today, various albums are finally getting the mastering and care they deserved!

So in fact the real problem is that there are no new phenomenal music, produced amazingly, being made anymore?! I mean since we are doing so much and paying so much for music from back in the day.

Hmm, just watched this video. Thing is, the type of music I like, just about everything is loud and massively compressed. I don't like jazz or classical, but pop, dance, indie and metal. So really no good masters to buy for me (at least, not that I found). And the last times I checked the latest remaster of Dire Straits, Enya etc, it's just more of the same. Mostly on streaming services. Pity that.. So I do what you suggested us to do: go for the early releases. And indeed, 90+% of the time, they sound the best... If only I liked Pink Floyd, Supertramp more.. But alas, I don't.. They have great modern remasters...

Remastering is destroying classic rock recordings-- usually garbage. Everyone who owns a computer thinks they're a mastering engineer. Audiophiles worship the so called mastering engineer as a GOD because that's all they know, because audiophiles only deal with the end product. The real sound engineering comes in several stages earlier starting right off the floor and especially the final down mix. A real mastering engineer can really make a difference, but if you stream a given song and listen to all the variations then it becomes clear-- garbage. Notice how modern recordings DDD rarely suffer from this disease. Also notice how AAA recordings also don't suffer from the disease of the amateur mastering impersonator.

I'm not a fan of remastered music because analog tape degradation over time can lead to the loss of one channel in parts of the music, requiring engineers to do extensive editing to fix it. I prefer the raw authenticity of the original recording.

That is a very rare phenomenon, not a standard. While dropouts were present also in the past.
