Love the focus on cards that aren't the signpost flashy stuff that people may miss.
bounce lands and spells that bounce your own lands get better and better

Legit thinking of building a deck like that. Use cards to get more lands into play, then bounce any to hand at situations that call for the spell-side of the MDFC to be used

The commons and uncommons in this set are something else, especially the new MDFC's! Between that and the Surveil Duals from earlier this year mana-bases are gonna be more complex than ever to build and strategize with, which I'm all for personally.
Bounce Lands continue to be the most underrated lands. And now we have TWO guildless commons

It's highly underrated
Just having the option of paying the 3 life for them to come in untapped is HUGE, even the mono-colored ones.
Speaking of Glimpse the Impossible: for all my fellow humans of taste who love Pia Nallar, Consul of Revival (all 27 or so of you), she got three new tools in MH3: Glimpse, Party Thrasher, and Unstable Amulet. Pia needed just a few more impulse-style/play from exile draw cards, and I think she finally got there. Also, Amulet is another redundant Impact Tremors-style effect for the deck.
@Controlqueen31

Also in Prosper, and even in non budget strategies. I'm testing the first two cards you posted and Glimpse is AMAZING, especially when you hit three lands, cause gives you two more mana in the upcoming turns (or 3 if you don't want to play one of those lands) The Trasher i'm not sure but I think is really good in a Prosper Midrange slower deck

Hey there! One of the other 27 Pia players here- and I was pretty excited to see the glimpse, but I think you’re right about the other 2 as well. You have an online list?
@eliabellavista01

Yeah party Thrasher and glimpse seem really good, but I will probably not try the amulet since I play more with anthems than with impact tremors effects. Another card I'm looking at is thraben charm, not too strong but I like modals and grave hate

@@eliabellavista01 I think Amulet is low key really strong. Excellent call on Thraben Charm, though. I don't run enough removal (and no graveyard interaction) in Pia and I need to fix that.

You know maybe the amulet is better than I thought, at the end of the day it replaces itself and the effect is good
The two-colour MDFCs are excellent for any deck that doesn't have a top-dollar manabase. You will most likely at least two enters-tapped lands or lands that usually enter tapped like the Snarls, where the added utility of an entire spell easily trumps something like cycling or scry 1.
When I first read Basking Broodscale I had to do a double take, it's a common that gives you spawn tokens for putting +1/+1 counters on it, so you are being rewarded for making it bigger with more mana to make it bigger. Also add it to the list of cards that go infinite with Rosie from LotR
Super excited to put all the new MDFCs into my Decks. The opportunity cost is just so los.
"i can probably put that in any deck" - yep that describes this set.
The fact that MDFC cards can enter untapped IS amazing (the monocolored ones). And the effects are not bad in the card costs. 4 mana removal in black? Not good, but not bad either. The blue "counter" and the black boggart are great. Also, the Golgari one is INCREDIBLE.
I like both sets of modal land/spell cards. I don't mind running tap lands, and so they basically allow me to pack backup options for things I might be a bit skint on. I suppose it's a matter of mindset. Like if you don't like tapped lands at all, that itself is the "backup" scenario, so if the front face isn't desired then why bother if the backup also isn't. But I like them as they allow squeezing in more niche effects like protection or removal or even just a bonus +1/+1 counter for the decks that may want such, without needing to commit to holding onto it in hand, especially for the expensive ones that can be made useful earlier.

The land destruction/unlockable spell is my favorite in this regard, can come in untapped and is a super playable combo of effects that would otherwise be far too niche to warrant a slot. The boros one is also good to replace a tapped land with if your commander gets big or is evasive to get sneaky commander damage kills with, I run it in Rocco street chef since he gets way bigger than people expect.
I tried to be the "innovator" in my playgroup that ran decks with 32 lands and 8-10 MDFC's when ZNR came out, and quickly realized how out of tempo my decks were after that change. I probably won't go that wild again, but I'm happy to test the new ones out in a more modest split, likely 3-5 total in a deck. Having 50 total to choose from is amazing.
I really appreciate podcast like this. Every has a “top ten power from blah blah blah” this is perfect!
I know we all love EDH here but can we take a moment to appreciate how fun of a draft environment this set is thanks to all of these great commons and uncommons? I’ve been meaning to make a cube since getting back in and now I know I could just make a set cube of MH3 and have a great game night for friends.
Additional point about treacherous greed, doesn't have to be combat damage, pingers etc can proc its condition!👍
in my Nymris deck I play 3 MDFC's: Malakir Rebirth, Silundi Vision, Sink into Stupor + 1 Bounce Land and will test Deprive as land bounce option as well.
Since Dana has no use for those Ondu Inversions, he's more than welcome to send them all to me. The niche use of being behind and needing to clear all the shenanigans off the board comes up a lot. And I like knowing I have it, Hour of Devestation, or Devestating Mastery in my back pocket to handle almost any permanent based problem. That it lives in a land slot is just icing. Means I have it available, without needing to spend a spell slot on it. It's awesome.

Yeah it really depends on what kind of player you are, I'm like Dana where my decks are very engine focused so you don't want to wipe your own stuff away you just want a normal board wipe to keep the heat off you long enough for the engine to hum. If you don't do any engine stuff though planar cleansing effects are perfect
One of my favorites is one I initially glossed over when I was first looking through the set - the mono-black enchantment Mindless Conscription. When it enters the battlefield and whenever you draw your third card each turn amass Zombies 3. Immediate include in my Rona, Herald of Invasion deck where the point is to not transform Rona and just use her to draw and discard cards every turn for a bunch of assorted draw and discard triggered effects. One of my favorites in that deck is Lazotep Channcelor which allows me to pay 1 mana whenever I discard to amass 2, which gets out of hand very quickly. Mindless Conscription just makes it get out of hand even faster.
I still stand behind, the fact that every card in the rare cycle of the zendikar MDFCs and alot of the uncommons are better than all except the red mythic MDFC's (in commander). There is practically no situation where I would want to cast the spells side on the mythics and the land side is worse than a basic land. Therefore, you have useless modality and are left with a land you can't search for.
Some of these uncommons and commons are insanely good. Thank you for the video.
The +1 counter stuff in this set is a blast
My pod plays a Commons and Uncommons only format we've put a little work into that has become one of our favorite ways to play commander. Basically every card here is gonna make a splash for us, it's very exciting. 😊
Finally. It is about time someone looked at the uncommons. Everyone raves about rares and mythics, and prerelease focuses a lot on commons, I must like that uncommons finally get the spotlight.
Really pleased to see this kind of focus on the show. I build budget commander decks (no more than £2.50 per card), so this is where my hobby lives. And that is how I am up 80 commander decks now! I spent most of yesterdaygoing through and replacing all the really budget lands (noticed a few still had guildgates) with the flip upgrades.
You guys could totally make your cam, the card art of a custom magic card for the display.
Bounce Lands are the best lands in casual commander. What other land costs {1} and draws you a land or has a stronger effect than that? Arguably fetches/shocks/duals but if that's the competition then that probably means Bounce Lands are pretty good
this episode is a real good for new set coverage and right now all three of them are looking really good like wow such handsome lads
Now I've got to look at more cards. Oh man!!!! Thanks guys lol
Witch enchanter is *amazing* in my Alesha deck! Removal that my commander can recur, AND a land???
Those new Eldrazi decks are gonna love Hour of Promise to get out Planar Nexus + Urza's Tower. Welcome to the Modern Tron Experience.
This is the main reason that buying sealed product of mh3 really doesn't feel that bad. Opening playable uncommons galore makes opening a bulk rare much more bearable, and I myself am stocking up on mdfcs while they're cheap and sealed product is still being printed.

I am having a small fit over Monstrous Vortex ... It triggers itself. Ulalek + Monstrous Vortex is awesome.
Absolutely right about bounce lands looking better and better. I’ve been looking at the OTJ bounce desert in my 2 color decks, and considering whether I could run more utility deserts to improve it. My new Shilgengar list has 5 MDFCs, that’s my record. I should probably fit all the in-color creatures in my Kinnan deck for value.
I love Treacherous Greed in Greasefang a wonderful way to keep my vehicles in the graveyard.
Just finished a FNM draft of mh3, and I went 3-0 (2-0 games, 3 times) with a rare-free mono black deck. The Commons alone have so much value and synergy that uncommons were bombs, insanely pushed set!
I love how the Ondu Inversion take is the exact opposite of what Richard and the MTGGoldfish crew always preach. I'd love for you guys to do an episode together and discuss MDFCs in particular

If it’s routinely beneficial to cast Ondu Inversion, you’d be way better off figuring out why you’re so far behind everyone else that wiping all non land permanents is a good play so often.
I found myself creating a list of cards I want from MH3. Most of my decks had 3-4 new cards they wanted everyone of my decks had something and some had 6-10 new cards (mostly common and uncommon) that I at least want to try in my decks. Some are hyper specific like muster the departed is great in my Boros Aggro deck where I sacrifice creatures to make bigger tokens and now I get an extra one every endstep
The Sphinx Ambassador challenge is irrelevant mostly, the vast majority of players building toy maker are making a Flavor Deck over a ever card has to be fact or fiction deck, toy maker plays games so a lot of cards that are guess adjacent make the cut
I can't wait to play Basking Broodscale and Evolution Witness in my Galadriel, Light of Valinor deck.
The common I'm most excited for is unstable amulet for my non cedh ob nixilis deck! The deck is already kinda stormy but with that it honestly gets very disgusting. I reckon even prosper, rocco street chef or other cast from exile commander can make use of it, becausd at the end of the day it's an impact tremors for those type of decks that also gives you some impulse draw!
@ospero7681

I immediately slotted Unstable Amulet into my Thirteenth Doctor/Yasmin Khan deck. Never mind the first and third abilities on the card, the fact that I get half a Guttersnipe for everything I cast from outside my hand is reason enough to play that card at just two mana.
Uncommon is becoming the new rare?
Mat says he can't imagine how he'll want to pay 3 life for an untapped monocolor land and will assess those new mdfcs as coming in tapped. That, to me, makes little sense. You don't pay life relative to how good the land is. You pay life if you need an untapped land. Doesn't matter of much fixing it provides. First, you're gonna try to delay playing those at all so you can keep the spell in hand. If you play them, you're gonna try to do so when there's a hole in your curve so they can entter tapped without any downside. Now, if you have no alternative (or just a more optimal land drop sequencing in mind) and need the mana, it is commander, who wouldn't be happy to pay the 3 life for a tempo play or to hold up removal?
they can also be Cascade or Discover targets
Honestly the untapped MDFC lands might as well be MTFC (modal triple faced cards) since they are spell, tap land, and untap land for 3 life. They’re great in almost every situation
@mattmorgan I thought that was you. Ur welcome for the card and joke! Love Card Sphere.
Accursed Marauder is almost exactly the card I look for in my Araumi of the Dead Tide deck. I play a bunch of discard and edict creatures because they gain triple the effectiveness when encored. But because Accursed Marauder specifies nontoken, it often makes me sac my commander! Regardless, I love the card, just not in that deck
I agree with the MDFCs for the most part, but I do want to point out that I think a LOT of players are going to use them the wrong way. Hear me out. The MDFCs, I think, we intended to 'fix' mana screw situations by giving players flexibility in **NONLAND** slots without running into mana flood scenarios. SO the idea here isn't to replace a BASIC LAND with these, but to increase your overall land count by replacing a NONLAND slot with them - that's why they focused in on more utility based effects this time around. I was already testing the old MDFCs and a slew of utility lands to get several decks as high as 44 land slots to actually startlingly great effect - the most notable being that I draw 'playable' hands far more often, meaning I am using my mulligan to filter out poor playability hands rather than filtering out flat out unplayable hands.
@guico33
17 күн бұрын
Or it could be to fix late-game mana flood situations, where you'd rather draw a spell than a land. Personally, there's too many cards I wanna put in my decks to replace any good spell with a subpar version, but I'm very happy to replace basics with those.
since alot of people attack players with most life, i dont care about losing life in many groups :D
I wish revitalizing repast was a bolt land. Otherwise, they did a great job here.
still waiting to get the GW MDFC card for Sythis, i wish the WU one didn't mention energy but it might still be worth trying in Noyan Dar, so my lands can walk in unimpeded
Supression Ray should not be underestimated in my mind. I haven't even played it yet but it seems like a complete house in energy decks. Obviously fixes mana but late game it's just another one-sided board wipe. And one thing that has become increasinly popular in the last year or so is youtuber saying "don't run symmetrical board wipes, run one sided board wipes." Yes yes, all restrictions still apply. Doesn't actually remove or even exile, but it simply gets blockers out of the way and protects you from the crackback. This lets your electrostatic pummeler or whatever else is new with the commander precons get in for the kill. In the end, 5 mana is par for the course to get a one sided boardwipe. But it's also a tapped dual to just slam down turn 1. It's so good.
Matt, you pay selesnya, 3 life ain’t sheeit!
Treacherous Greed seems good for Teysa Opulent Oligarch too
Ahem... Your creatures don't need to "connect" on combat damage with Treacherous Greed, it's any damage. It also doesn't have to deal it to a player, any damage on any target will suffice... if you insist on combat damage I suggest using Nether Traitor for the unblockable and recursive combo...
Typically I'm the type of person to dissuade people from opening packs and instead suggesting for them to buy singles. But for _this_ set... I've been holding my tongue.
Every single mdfc and pauper triome land. That alone speaks volumes.
MH3 has some cool commander options, but if I were to buy another box, it would almost entirely be driven by how much I want uncommon oddly enough…

Thing is, there are enough cards out there that do that *and* sync up with the Toymaker. Source: I have this deck, and there are one or two "make stuff into piles" cards in Esper colours I don't even play. So cutting one of those for a seven-drop that doesn't actually interact with your commander and isn't a game-ending threat feels like you're hurting your chances and not even getting any nice theming bonus out of it. Speaking of seven-drop, another reason not to include Sphinx Ambassador in Celestial Toymaker decks: the deck's mana curve is already top-heavy enough, with a good number of five-plus-drop creatures and spells (Master of Predicaments, The Seventh Doctor, Intrude on the Mind, Sphinx of Clear Skies, Brilliant Ultimatum, Boneyard Parley etc.etc.) that any card in that mana range better synchronise with what my commander is doing.

Edit: I want to say that I absolutely adore this podcast and love all of your insights. I recognize this might've come across as a bit rude. But, point still stands. The audio with the beginning music really is just super loud. It's a cool jingle, but it's too loud. Thanks for all the work you and the other EDHRec team members do, it really is amazing the data collection you've been able to gain from this project. Hey can y'all please for the love of God balance the audio of your intro with your actual microphones, I actually have to turn my speakers down when the intro plays and turn them back up for the music because it's so loud in the beginning. gonna say right off the bat I disagree on Ondu Inversion... Probably one of the MDFCs that I end up using the business side quite a bit... it's a catch-all answer and I ended up winning some games when it sure looked like I wasn't going to. Yes it prolongs games... I guess the question you have to ask yourself: would you rather have given up on the game half an hour ago to start a new one? Or was the come from behind worth it?

@@danaroach29 mmhh no... I think you are presuming a bit here or anyway I think your meta might be a tad different than mine... I've said I've used it quite a bit, but I wouldn't say I use it "often".. My mono white Oketra deck I've had for years, I keep swapping stuff out but Ondu Inversions is still an auto-include as you're not sacrificing much to have it in... What do you do when you are behind? (and you don't have to be that far behind to get a big tempo swing from a well-timed board wipe, especially one that hits everything).... you're gonna say it doesn't happen that you are behind and you always play to be ahead? You can plan it that way but Magic is also a game of luck...or you'd just rather take the loss and start over? Fine I guess.... I mean I win my fair share of games but EDH is a 4-player game... I never expect to always be ahead. My friends and I all run interaction and our games can be pretty swingy. So I guess it depends on your meta... if not much control and you usually each do your own thing until someone wins then yeah... But otherwise board wipes (even overcosted ones that only take a tapped land spot) are pretty damn useful.
Challenge the stats ... I am starting to remove all basics from my decks because there are too many good dual/triome/mdfc/utility lands.

I miss one card in this video: skittering precurcer And i have a simple reason why it needs to be here, its a power creeped pitiless plunderer: 1. It is cheaper 2. It makes creatures wich will tigger bloodartists and the like. (Also they can block) 3. It triggers of ANY nontoken sac including fetches I know that the sions only make colorless but tbh in any deck that could run the plunderer and the skitter i would run both.
