I know that many of the Spanish-speakers who came to the Philippines came from Mexico, but tbh when I hear castellano filipino, I can totally hear the accents of Andalusia and the Canary Islands coming through.

Spaniards who came to the Philippines were Castilian. Proof is that the old Filipinos called Spaniards as ‘Kastila’. The Spanish I learned in Philippine schools and taught in the 1950s was Castilian. There is the use of ‘Vosotros’ which the Andalusians do not use and the pronunciation of the double ‘L’ (elle) and ‘cion’ pronounced as ‘tion’.

@@fides249I don't doubt your experience, but the speakers of castellano filipino don't sound castillian at all. Also, the ll is used in Andusia, while vosotros isn't as widely used. Something else that Andaulusians do is not pronounce the z and ci/ce with the English-sounding "th" sound. The speakers in this video also don't.

@@fides249 The double LL is pronounced as 'y' in standard Castilian as well. We don't say "Me LYamo Marco'. We say 'Me yamo Marco.' Vosotros and nosotros mean two different things and have nothing to do with each other. Vosotros means you (plural). Nosotros means we. All Spanish dialects use nosotros. Only standard Castilian in most of Spain uses vosotros. Andalusians and Latin Americans use ustedes. Pronouncing the letter "z", "ci" (as in gracias) or "ce" as in (as in cena) with the th sound in English is restricted to Spain and omitted in southern Spain, the Canary Islands, Latin America etc. Anyway, the point I was making was that the accent, meaning sound and cadence of the speakers when they speak Spanish sounds reminiscent of southern Spanish. I'm a native speaker..

South American countries are so big and they are spanish speaking countries. It's realy hard to do business with South Americans because language differences, am i right ? That's the reason why very few South Ametican people have doing business in Philippines and the time very few Filipinos businessmen have doing business in Latin or South American countries that is due to language differences. Have you notoced NO JOLLIBEE BRANCHES in latin countries because of language barrier. Sad 😢

@@shawnmiguelrivera2266 Yeah but it's not officially recognized on any national administrative or even heritage status. I've only seen people from Zamboanga and Maguindanao speak it en-masse as a Native language. Should be like Mindanao with Arabic, implemented into the public school system for a fixed amount of months and then available as an opcional subject for higher education. It's (according to the pinoys I've met) easier for Illocanos and Cebuanos to learn than English and still opens a lot of opportunities for Pinoys worldwide, being able to speak to another ~600ish million people.

Not to mention your ancestors accepted Spanish as a second national language in the country when it got independent, it only stopped when the U.S.A invaded you.

Es la hora que hay que reinstituir el español como uno de los idiomas oficiales en Filipinas para que el gobierno filipino a través del Departamento de Educación lo incluya como una materia obligatoria desde preprimaria hasta preparatoria. Además de reinstituir el español en las escuelas, los medios de comunicación deberían usarlo como uno de los idiomas vehículos como producir programaciones que los actores, actrices, presentadores de noticiero filipinos hablan español.

if we are following the language system of Switzerland in the Philippines, Spanish would be recognized and would be spoken by the majority along with Tagalog and other regional languages, not just recognized as a minority language.

Para mí, el acento español filipino de hoy tiene similitudes con tagalo, cebuano y otros idiomas filipinos que suena más fácil de entender que un acento de españa o de latinoamerica. OK, solo una corrección. España fue una excepción. NO tuvo colonias, Fillipinas era una capitanía general del virreinato de Nueva España, es decir, NO eran colonia, eran España con súbditos españoles en igualdad de condiciones que los otros españoles en Europa, América y Africa.

@@aljohnpolyglot sí, Vietnam junto a Camboya y Laos, antes de que se independizaran, eran parte de la indochina francesa. En algún momento , nose si Laos y Camboya pero Vietnam adoptó el francés como idioma oficial durante más de un siglo.

not really. Vietnam has no more French families still living there. And there is no French creole spoken either. On the other hand, Spanish families remained in the Philippines after independence and even to this day, there are still families that are nearly 100% Spanish. And Spanish creole (Chavacano) is spoken by up to 1 million people.

Cómo desearía que el idioma de mis abuelos fuera devuelto a Filipinas. La última vez que hablé español fue en la década de 1980 cuando mis abuelos aún estaban vivos. Hoy en día, me cuesta hablar castellano porque el inglés ha dominado el archipiélago filipino.

@@sfv6 why? All laws are available in Spanish in California and Spanosh is spoken amd was once the native and only official tongue, actually some counties are majority spanish speakers, and Los Angeles for example has more than 40% spakers

California también fue España, 200 años antes de ser inglesa y en gran parte de los actuales EEUU, incluida California, se hablaba español 150 años antes que el inglés.

Está bien que recuperen un idioma que fue parte de su cultura por muchos años.

A señor Aljohn, quiero aprender más español. Desafortunadamente, no hay una escuela como Instituto de Cervantes aquí en mi sitio de mindanao. Siempre es una ventaja que los estudiantes se sumerjan en una escuela de habla hispana en lugar de aprender el idioma casi solos en casa o en internet.

yo tambien. no necesitaba una escuela. con internet ya se basta. aprendi espanol solamente en mi cuarto. prefiero asi. (porque no tengo dinero, y no me gusta la transportacion aqui jajaja). todo que necesitas serian ahi en el internet :)

Seriously, Spanish should be reinstated in our education system. Surely, it’ll bring in billions to our economy. If we didn’t speak english, we won’t have BPO sector and overseas work wouldn’t be as strong. Without English, OFW and BPO sectors won’t be here, we’re not gonna get billions of income for our economy, and we’ll be poor ass third world pathetic country. Bring in Spanish in our education. It’s one of the most spoken languages in the world and the language easiest for us to learn because we already have Spanish words on our daily lives- as in no one can spend a day without speaking a single spanish word.

Filipinos don’t have as much social reasons for speaking Spanish. Spain and Latin American are on the other side of the world and trade and import are difficult even in these times. It’s better for PH to have learned English since. Most nearby countries like Singapore, Malaysia, India, AU, NZ etc all speak English

Si los filipinos tuvieran memoria histórica sabrían que fueron los EEUU los que crearon el enfrentamiento entre España y Filipinas para "liberarlos", cuando consiquieron derrotar a España IMPUSIERON a las bravas el inglés y masacraron millón y medio de filipinos que se sublevaron cuando los EEUU incumplieron todas sus promesas de libertad para Filipinas. Solo en memoria de tantos filipinos masacrados por los anglos darían ganas de vomitar al oír hablar o leer inglés ... En los 300 años que Filipinas fue España, y los filipinos eran españoles, no americanos de 4ª categoría, el tagalo y las demás lenguas nativas, como sus costumbres se respetaron.

Son sinónimos (con matices), los nacionalismos buscan donde confrontar con cualquier cosa. En realidad es cierto, el gallego, el vasco, el catalán, el valenciano, el aranés, ... son lenguas españolas al igual que el castellano. Pero cualquiera entiende perfectamente que decir español o castellano es sinónimo y así lo recoge la RAE, otra cosa es el que busca enfrentamiento político, ...

El idioma español es hermoso.❤

No es un bloqueo/una excusa para no estudiar Español. Yo he estado estudiando Español desde mi secundaria usando los libros, los artículos de internet, el diccionario español y simplemente práctica con los hispanohablantes. Escríbelo, Léelo, Escúchalo, Háblalo!

I went to college in a Catholic university here in the Philippines, and a prerequisite course for all majors is Spanish. I studied Spanish for two semesters, however never really practiced it outside of class.

A mí tambien. En mi universidad, UST, tuvimos tres clases (1 clase cada semestre) en Español pero no usamos fuera de la aula. Yo estudié con Instituto Cervantes despues algunos años de mi graduación.

As a Filipino who grew up here in the states, I mainly grew up with a lot of Latinos . In school I actually took Spanish classes but I really didn’t practice much unless some of my classmates spoke Spanish. I can kind of understand but sometimes I get confused because there’s so many Latinos here with different dialects & accent that it’s hard to keep up since alot of Spanish speaking people speak too fast 😅

Filipino born and raised (and living) in the States here. And yeah even though I know some basic phrases and words in Spanish, my brain immediately stops working once a native speaker starts speaking like there’s a time limit. Like I really feel the need to tell them to chill because out here in Hawaii, we’re very relaxed. Like there’s no reason to be in a hurry unless you’re trying to get to work.

Latinos fueron ROMA y los pueblos EUROPEOS que: conquistaron, romanizaron, integraron como provincias latinas, latinizaron y generaron lenguas romances. Los españoles, durante 300 años respetaron, en América y Filipinas, los usos, costumbres y lenguas locales, así el tagalo tuvo su primerra gramática elaborada por un español, y en América la gramática del nahualt (Mesoamérica) y Guaraní (Sudamérica) se elaboraron, por españoles, antes que las del inglés, alemán o francés.

As an American of Filipino descent, I have to agree. Many of my people from the motherland sometimes sound a little funny. Whereas if they spoke Spanish, they would sound more at home due to their use of the alveolar tap and trills that are present in the Filipino languages found throughout the Philippines.

@@nicholascauton9648but remember this: Whether you like it or not, Spanish is stigmatized in the United States with its association with illegal migrants, which I’m sure Filipinos would not want to be associated with. I’d rather be perceived as American English fluent sounding than Spanish, to avoid being marginalized. In America, as long as you sound fluent, they don’t consider you a foreigner That’s just my two cents.

lol😂😂 hahaha you sound so dumb. Spanish is not our ancestors language, it's a foreign language not native to the Philippines. It's ok to take it back but don't say that it's our forefathers' language. You still have a colonial mentality. If you really want to take back our ancestors language(s) well it somewhere in Malayo-Polynesian branch.

my mom is taking online classes from instituto cervantes Manila! i wish i learned Spanish earlier, during the pandemic so that I would have made good use of it. I'm currently only self-taught as i hate online classes and the nearest instituto cervantes is an hour away from where i live, and i live in the Netherlands as a filipino. i haven't been self-learning lately due to school stress and my family's planning to move to Spain next year!

Spain should support the Philippines on its Spanish language revival. Lots of Fillipinos speak (habla) chavacano/Spanish dialect mostly in Zamboanga City, Cavite, Cebu and it is still part of the Philippine Universities curriculum to take 6 units of Spanish subject in Undergraduate program.

The Philippines was never significant to Spain before, so why be significant now? Spain doesn't give a shit about the Philippines. That's what Rizal was fighting for at first, for Spain to treat the Philippines equally or at least as significant as how Spain treated its other colonies.
