It isn’t Voultar’s board that eliminates jailbars from NEC hardware, it’s a couple capacitors inside that need to be replaced with a different value. IIRC, the fix was worked out by Tim Worthington. That was likely done to yours at the same time Voultar’s board was installed.

We need a memory card for the Saturn. I have all kind of storage possible for the Saturn ( Floppy disk, cartridge, pseudo Kai sd card cartridge, and Satiator save feature). I really wish to get a easy and safe save system like the ps1 memory card. On the Saturn all the systems that I have have some failure , the official cartridge can loose your saves, the floppy disk can’t save directly ( except 20 games), the Satiator reset your internal memory in your Saturn to save into the sd card, the pseudo Kai sd card cartridge can brick and the save process is very slow. Great video Joe ! Not enough Sega but great 😜

I've experimenting wth the this great new device. It's called a CRT television. You can play all your old retro consoles on it! No lag; no sodering, no file manipulation. It's just plug and play, and, best, you get what people say is an 'authentic' experience!

Thanks for the note about dual output. I still want an Super HD System³ Pro but now I know there is a reason to keep the UperGrafx UGX-02 around. :) As for who would want 480p, well, that was one of the biggest things Bob from RetroRGB wanted to see from the UGX along with 240p. With either 240p or 480p you can go through a VGA adapter. Also, UperGrafx already supported Composite YUV colors over true digital HDMI on original hardware. ;) David Shadoff worked with the UperGrafx creators to get what seems to be perfect drive emulation so Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective does not desync.

I'm always happy to see scanline options in these products. For some, it's important. I'm a big fan of scanlines, real or fake. At one point, I didn't understand it, but I looked into it and why people liked that. It was one of those things where I finally understood and saw what other people saw in it. Once I saw the difference, I could no longer unsee it. I remember seeing a website a while back that explained the difference between the PC Engine and SuperGrafx with Darius. Using the extra video chip, and it's extra sprite and BG layers, was a nice enhancement to avoid the total and per-line sprite limits while still maintaining PCE compatibility, though with flicker. Really cool seeing that demonstrated in video. Good to see all these retro accessories and that they do. As for the end skit, you reminded me of Jonathan Harris from the old Lost in Space TV show with that accent.

9:34 - Hi Joe, a number of people use 480p output to play on CRT computer monitors, using an HDMI to VGA converter and it works great. The scanlines here work well and sorta simulates the look of a high TVL PVM. Retro RGB made a short video on this, with the OSSC in mind. And albeit very rare, there's also the matter of 480p EDTV CRTs, I got one and it does not interpret 240p properly (it's a 100Hz set) or anything above 480p (it is not HD CRT), so 480p is the only viable option. There's always a niche use for some function that might sound useless or reduntant to some, but it's useful to others. I was disappointed to learn the PS4 Pro and PS5 dropped 480p support. It's not like jacks and inputs that add cost to production (like PS5 dropping TOSLINK), it's just an option that could just be left there intact, even if most people don't use it, some might. Playing modern systems on a widescreen EDTV was one of those quirky little niche things I really enjoyed sometimes.

  • @Yui714

I ran with HD displays for retro gaming for 15 years. Finally got an old square 4:3 SDTV and never looked back. You don't want to see the pixels. That's the beauty of image rendering on SD displays. It's completely unlike LED. The quality is better than you remember too. It doesn't look at all like what SD video looks like on an HD screen. It's blended seamlessly without any noticeable artifacts. A piece a furniture worth the space if you have a rather large retro library. It's not the same playing old consoles on HD displays and its not the same emulating them. SD is the format it was designed on and for and it looks completely different than anything LED can produce. You can't even record an SD screen and play the video back on HD and have it look the same. Not only the visible scanlines, but LED's can't produce the brightness, vivid colors, or the round screen shape. Your display reduces the video to pixels. Yo but I'm not crazy, I have a giant 4k TV with all the color features hooked up to a modern gaming PC that I use a lot more. Just no point in playing an emulator or eshop title that shows these old games as pixelly messes when it didn't look like that at all until the mid-2000's released new displays.

I think all this stuff is neat, genuinely. I think I've honestly grown past trying to upkeep all the mods & workarounds one needs to make the stuff work. I still have the games, happily as well as the consoles but I'm happy with emulation. Had I had the space for a CRT or the money to care to invest in this kinda thing, yeah maybe. But at the same time, clicking and going is just nice. And yes, I own the games. I know how aggressive people get over this. I'll wave my cart of Ranger X at you if that helps remove aggression for not buying a game I literally can't purchase in a way that'd support the developer, that I'm pretty sure has been dead for at least 20 years.
