Criminally Overlooked Games 5
Ойындар
Episode 365 - Sometimes games just don't get the love and attention that they deserve, usually because they're not big names like Mario, Sonic, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, Pokémon, Roblox, Minecraft, or others I should probably put in this description to theoretically improve this video's reach. Anyway let's look at some more games that people should talk about at least a little bit more than they do.

The pixel art in Beyond Oasis looks great. I really like the restraint shown in communicating the textures of the grass, ground, walls, etc.

Funny you mention that, I was actually thinking Genji (the first game on PS2 not its sequel the meme'd to death PS3 launch game) should be featured in this video too. It's a beautiful game with nice combat similar Onimusha but with jump button. The only negative is that the game is way too short. Thanks to that crab meme, Genji will be forever associated with PS3 launch woes and the original game in PS2 forgotten.
Seeing Beyond Oasis on the Genesis Mini helped make it a bit less underrated imo - good to see it getting some recognition in this day and age.

Great stuff as always Joe! I feel like Extreme-G for the N64 is a pretty fun futuristic racer that gets overlooked when compared to the Wipeouts of the era. Beyond Oasis is a great game. Collecting hearts buffs your health, collecting gems buffs your mana. You can use breakable weapons of different power, but there are also ways to get infinite powerful weapons if you pass a challenge. Maze-like dungeons, puzzle-like bosses. Some hidden mechanics like summoning spirits from enemies and inventory items. Very nice animations. One of my favourites. Happy to see it mentioned.

S.O.S. SNES is criminally underrated. Not the Sink or Swim S.O.S. Game, the other one with the Titanic looking ship on the box art. And Fur Fighters on Dreamcast and PS2 is also an underrated shooter game
I'm so glad someone finally gave a fully detailed explaination of how to get massive damage.
Beetle Adventure Racing on the N64 is a pretty fun game even that gets overlooked. I know I rented it four times before I finally bought it on clearance at some small game store. When I worked in a game store, we always had a couple in stock and they never sold. Customers would see the title and think it was another crappy licensed game. You can get it for around $20 nowadays.
I like how you can light up the dark corridors with your gun in Cyborg Hunter while you can still use your radar to see incoming enemies. Clever!
Had a lot of fun playing Game and Watch 3 on Switch recently. Underrated. Where has this been all of my life
Growing up I would play Final Fight 1,2, and 3 all in one sitting on the snes. Good times! I'm still obsessed with the side scroller beat em ups. (and shmups)
After all these years, I still have never skipped your intro. Keep killing it Joe, you the man!
@richardslotboom9250

His intro sounds awesome!!
I like your videos. I listen to them for hours and hours until I literally fall asleep and I wake up to them still playing.
The blonde-haired woman replacing the Borgman character in the western version of Cyborg Hunter looks kind of like she could be "anime Bonnie Tyler". I feel like Beyond Oasis is more accurately described as "formerly overlooked". It was obscure for over two decades but it's kind of hard to call any game included on the first Sega Genesis Mini and in the Sega Genesis section of Switch Online "overlooked" today.
My day always brightens up when there's new stuff from Joe. It's my favorite channel on KZread for a while now, and Joe, kudos for all the effort you put into your episodes. I came to really appreciate after watching the stream where you edited the MSX episode, and then when I got into editing my own stuff. It's a tough racket! Keep up the great work!
I always enjoy the little skits at the end of these.
Really love these type of videos - I discover so many hidden gems this way!
Skyblazer is so overlooked, when I beat it like a couple years ago, eventually I forgot it existed until this video reminded me.
That ending bit made me choke on my morning tea.
"I would've flipped those around, but what do I know" literally laughed out loud
Those disappearing blocks on the tower in skyblazer drove me nuts for weeks, glad im not the only one
Thanks, Joe, once again, for all your efforts. They are much appreciated as always, man.
The ladies on the back of the Virtua Racing Deluxe box are truly "Out of this World".. as in, they look like they came from that game. 😅 Seriously the best thing about the Japanese release is the inclusion of SRAM so you can save your lap/track times and also keep mirror mode unlocked when you beat all the stages. Sega was insane removing this feature from the USA version, after having folks pay a $150 premium for the half-assed 32X addon and the high game prices on top of that.
FREAKING JOE & his under rated overtly sarcastic end sketches!! You almost had me do a spit take!! XD
So glad you mentioned Skyblazer, as it really doesn't get enough love! Though I think it's funny how you mentioned the game being difficult in spots and often frustrating, as I found it to be quite possibly the easiest 2D platformer I've ever played -- I rented it from BlockBuster back in the day, and literally beat the whole game on my first sitting. But I liked it enough that I went out and bought it afterward, so I could replay it again and again! Definitely didn't find any part of the game even the slightest bit challenging, though, nor was I ever frustrated for even a moment. If anything, it was kind of a relaxing game to play, since I could almost just zone out and beat the whole thing without even paying attention to it. I also think it's funny that you mention hating the stage with the wind currents, as that's -- again -- quite possibly one of my favorite stages in any 2D platformer, ever. I LOVE that there's not a single piece of solid ground in the entire stage, and you just have to ride wind currents to get to the exit -- it feels so freeing and fun, and is such a cool change of pace from other platformer games of the time!
My two most underrated games are Mystical Ninja 64 and MK: Shaolin Monks. Two of my favorite games ever that deserve a ton more recognition.
22:01 -- The character Lucia was modeled after world champion martial artist and Hong Kong cinema star Cynthia Rothrock, whom was also the inspiration for Mortal Kombat's Sonya Blade.
Another overlooked game worth mentioning is Nascar Rumble on the PS1.Developed by the same people who made Dead Space series. It's essentially a Mario Kart clone.....but better. The powerups are much more tolerable and not unfair towards you, an issue that is well known in the Mario kart games. In Rumble, if you slow down your car, then you can dodge all of the projectiles being thrown at you whereas in Mario Kart, you get hit by pretty much everything such as blue shell, green shell, boo etc. Afaik, there's no such thing as rubber banding in Rumble so you will have to be good to win the race. You don't see this in Mario Kart. They even have Jess Harnell, the voice actor for later Crash Bandicoot and Spyro games to record some lines in this game. Also, Derek Trucks the famous guitarist almost composed some soundtracks for the game. Whether you are Nascar fans or not, you will love this game.
The Mark of Kri, Binary Domain, The Saboteur and Darksiders 2 are all excellent games that were hideously underrated
Cyborg Hunter is awesome! That was the first game I fully beat. Love the upgrades and everything about it
Game sack is the best. I could watch these videos over and over.
"Yes, the Aladdin soundtrack is now stuck in my head too." How... did he know? PRINCE ALI, MIGHTY IS HE, ALI ABABWA!
A few games that I feel go overlooked or under appreciated... Dynamite Headdy, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster’s Hidden Treasure, Contra Hard Corpse, and The Flintstones on the Genesis... Bomberman Online on the Dreamcast... Rhythm Thief on the 3DS... Totally Rad and Adventure Island 3 on the NES... Digimon Adventure on the PSP... And of course once again I bring up Penguin Adventure on the MSX.
It's fun to see Skyblazer mentioned. Before we named ourselves the incredibly silly "Moron Police" we used to be named Skyblazer because of that game. Our name got worse, but the music got slightly better.
As far as criminally underrated games go, I would have to suggest the Way of the Samurai games on the PS2 / PS3. They are sandbox samurai games with a "choose your own adventure" twist with mild rogue like elements. I will admit when you first start playing you will likely feel lost as you are just kind of thrown in, and the controls are a little clunky, but after getting accustomed to it there is a lot of enjoyment to be had. Each run is relatively short, and even if you die and lose your stuff you are still gaining points to unlock cosmetics and game modes which keeps the momentum going. Highly recommend.
Another great episode. Thank you. One game I think deserves more love is Jurrasic Park on the Sega CD. It is one of my favorite point-and-click games and the production values are pretty impressive.

@@hellocollegejason198 I did at first but years later after playing it and appreciating it for what it was, it has become one of my favorite retro games.
Deeper in the game, with access to all moves, weapons and spirits, Legend of Oasis for the Saturn is something really special, like Beyond Oasis before it, the only thing it needed was a sequel later in the Saturn's life so it could turn into an amazing trilogy. In fact, all overhead SEGA games from Golvellius onwards are great games. I like how you can combo while dashing with Guy in Final Fight 3, it's also possible to moonwalk and double tap < while holding R to dodge attacks too, it's indeed a great game for the SNES, nice soundtrack but no much variety, and letterboxed like all Capcom games on the console, indeed the best FF game for me.
Stayed for the end skit. Again not disappointed. Amazing
I like to bring up Biker Mice From Mars on Snes when appropriate. It has a Rocking Soundtrack, and it shows the people who made it really cared to make it a great racing game. Also Vinny in that game with spinning around corners and using powerups can really go fast.
Landstalker for genesis is a game that deserves more love
Some times I watch your videos just to hear that awesome intro and leave a like. You’ve definitely earned that from me 😀
Massive crab, massive damage. That's just science at work.
No other host on KZread is comparable or even comprable to you, Joe. Thanks for another great video.
Joe, I've been following your channel for years now, never fails to entertain me Next episode of underrated games, I'd love if you'd bring up Threads of Fate from PS1. It's a Square Action RPG game that I only found out about last year. It plays almost like Dragon Valor, has two stories and an extremely funny plot with loads of gags. It's a beautiful game that no one talks about, you really should give it a look
Jurassic Park for the Sega Master System. Really solid amd overlooked platformer. Mcdonald's Treasureland Adventure on the Sega Genesis is also realllllly good, especially the music. The first game made by Treasure of Gunstar Heroes Fame
Thanks, I love when you do these, there is a few titles here that I never heard of, and will add them to my devices to check out.
The Trails of Cold Steel series is under appreciated. Heck the Legend of Heroes saga in general.
I used to play Final Fight 3 and, indeed, a lot of people didn't know it had branching paths and a better storyline with the new characters
Young Merlin for SNES was a pretty cool game none of my friends had heard of...
Skyblazer is giving me serious Gunstar Heroes vibes. Especially during that one fight with the boss fight around 6:53 with the pseudo 3D effects.
Great episode as usual. Thank you and never stop gamesack
Great work. Another overlooked game not a lot talk about is Adventure of Little Ralph for PS1. Maybe this channel has talked about it, I wouldn’t be surprised. Very fun game. Hard but addicting. You keep wanting to retry until you beat the level. Only takes a few hours to beat but worth the afternoon trying it and replaying it every year.
A criminally under-rated but *excellent* game on the Saturn (mostly because it was a Japan only release and all the npc dialogue text etc is in Japanese) is *Princess Crown*

Enjoying this one with a new born on my lap. Thanks!
10:36 Getting yet another cheap laugh out of the notoriously embarrassing E3 PS3 launch show will surely never get old! 😂
Kokuga on the 3DS is a digital-only, killer, stealth-based, tank action game that I don't think anyone else seems to even think exists. So good, but keep the 3D slider at about 1/3.
Few random suggestions: • Doom Troopers on Snes • Samurai Shodown RPG on NeoCD • Yu yu hakusho on the Genesis • Marathon 2 on Mac 😜
Why are criminally overlooked games always the most expensive ones. Drives me crazy sometimes. Thank god for everdrives 😁
Your sack was filled with some great games. Thanks for the video.
12:42 When you're on foot in Wyrm, it reminds me of a game from Action 52 a little bit. 😂
Incredibly cool episode, cheers Joe!
Wurm really reminds me of Golgo 13 on the NES. Like Wurm, it had a lot of different play styles such as first person shooting, side scrolling shmup levels, and even dungeon crawling.
So happy to see Skyblazer mentioned here. Definitely an awesome game with excellent gameplay mechanics and excellent graphic and sound design. I only wish it were longer!
It’s nice to see Dragon Valor on here. I definitely enjoyed that game. I can’t recall if this game has ever been mentioned in a video, but Battle Hunter for the original PlayStation was a lot of fun.
Lost Odyssey by Mistwalker is a forgotten treasure.
