This was disappointing. Destiny retreated to rhetoric and 'west is best' inconsistency. Yeah, we all know that middle eastern countries are authoritarian, antidemocratic, religiously and ethnically discriminatory places - but that doesn't mean Israel is correct. The most disappointing aspect of the debate was Destiny continuing to claim 'no-one will ever answer these questions' - when Burgis repeatedly answered the questions and agreed with Destiny on what those answers were. This seemed more like a personal diatribe against someone who's been critical of Destiny's Israeli 'apologism'. The main thesis Destiny presented seemed to be 'let Israel do what it wants because we need them as an ally'. Reservations about the actual conduct of the military campaign, which I concede that Destiny finds distasteful, aside - there is a moral hypocrisy at play here. It's one based in the unquestioned assumption that America and 'the West' is the moral highground and so cannot be the bad guy in any given situation. This is an extremely one eyed view that doesn't pan out given the merest of examinations of history. Jewish people have been historically treated poorly in Islamic countries - but it's not whataboutism to say they have fared so much worse in Christian/western countries. If you want to appeal to historic antisemitism as evidence of how Muslims will treat Jews in the middle east today - then it's fair to compare that to how they've been treated in the west, and also fair to see how Israel and the west treat Muslims. Because Islam isn't a monolith that has treated Jewish people the same way for 1400 years. And maybe the reasons why there has been so much antisemitism in the middle east in the last century doesn't stem from a consistent historical theme - but from how Israel came into being and immediately started its project of ethnic cleansing of Palestine. If you want to appeal to the existential threat coming from one side - it's inconsistent to ignore it from the other. Disappointing debate bro performance from someone who probably agrees with far more of what Burgis said than he would like to admit in the heat of a personal beef.

"Well I suppose we can both agree on that point that more people have a preference towards vanilla, but if the question is about my personal taste as it pertains to the state of the public's opinions about ice cream then I think that doesn't erase my preference towards chocolate, especially if we're talking about what I should buy when I do a food shop and whether we should allow public opinion to affect our standards about cold sweet food products" "So to be clear, you do agree most people prefer vanilla ice cream?" It sounds like an exaggeration but I think he really didn’t say a single thing for steelmanning destinys position except “leverage” and the rest was just filler words and him mumbling about how he can’t even think of destinys position It’s pretty crazy that people act like they can’t even fathom what the other side is arguing or whyd they believe what they do. It’s a contentious topic because there’s good arguments on both sides, if you can’t even fathom why the other side believes what they do how would you argue against them. You should know what their main reasons are and be able to explain why when you considered that it wasn’t convincing.

Ben's position is genuinely looking at Israel in a vacuum and saying "Israel bad because war and occupation." Regardless of what other countries around there have done and regardless of what Palestinians did to get here. The whataboutism claim is frustrating because it feels like a situation where there are 6 or 7 kids in a family and they can fight and bite and kick and scream with no parental correction but as soon as Israel throws any kind of a punch, the parents (people like Ben) suddenly care about what Israel is doing, don't want to hear what other people did, two wrongs don't make a right, don't care about what the other brothers and sisters are doing, etc.

Ben just compared Israel, and the war in Gaza, a war started by Hamas, who still hold hostages, who consistently refuse a ceasefire to return the hostages for anything less than Israels dissolution as a state, to the war in Russia, and the invasion of Ukraine, which was unprovoked by all reasonable metrics, and began as a proxy war/civil war in Ukraine, and expanded to a full on invasion of Ukraine by Russia... This comparison is literally disgusting, and it cannot be overstated just how disgusting it is.

Ben: here are my main points. Destiny: here are my main points. Destiny: ok, before we address each other’s arguments, can we just make sure we agree on basic facts so we can make our case without this devolving into a pedantic debate? Ben: *wastes an hour with word vomit while refusing to give straightforward answers to exceedingly straightforward questions.* Ben: in closing, I just want to point out that over the past hour [of time I completely wasted droning on and on], that Destiny never rebutted my main arguments. Ergo, I win. Brilliant strategy - waste all the time on the clock, and then claim you won when you never actually had the debate. Yeah, I’d be pissed too if I were Destiny. So absurd.

From the safety of his American home, Ben is generous in his assurances that a new Arab Muslim majority state in which Muslims have been raised on a steady diet of antisemitism would become the single Arab Muslim majority state that will respect the rights of Jewish residents. I absolutely hate when someone lists out logical fallacies to negate another person's argument thinking that they are always used incorrectly. Whataboutism for example. What about... Arabs have more freedom, rights, financial opportunities, safety, basic needs (housing, food, water, healthcare) in Israel Proper than in any other neighbouring country? What about that Ben?
