Model United Nations Rules of Procedure
This is an introduction to basic forms of debate and rules of procedure used in Model United Nations simulations. Please note that some rules, particularly the majority needed to motion to suspend debate (moderated or unmoderated caucuses), differ between Model United Nations and Model Arab League or Model NATO. However the basic motions and debate structure are the same. This video was created and produced by Northeastern University's International Relations Council and the Digital Media Commons at Snell Library.

"How many votes does it take to pass the ammendment?" "Two-thirds" Well, she didn't really answer his question...

At least two thirds of all advocates present.

But when you ask that question to the chair you expect them to tell you the number of delegates.

Amendments are first deemed either friendly or unfriendly - if all the sponsors of a draft resolution deem an amendment friendly (meaning they have no objections to it being included in the document), it's automatically adopted. Otherwise - if any sponsor doesn't want it to be included in the document - the amendment is voted upon after the closure of debate. In this case, only a simple majority (more votes in favor than against) are required to adopt the amendment.
