Rainbow is the best vacuum cleaner there is. Amazing performance really cleaning without contaminating, this machine if you take care of it is good for life! I bought mine in 1994 and still running. I sent her twice for maintenance but really love it.

I live in Asia. I have a rainbow E2 which belongs to my late mom dad. It still works until today. My Hitachi made in china is a total crap so I switched back to the E2. These are really great quality vacs cleaners!

Thanks for the comment :) You are totally right about the D2 (or R2D2 as a lot of people nick named them). The reason I did not include them in the model review is that they are so old that it is very difficult to get parts and to do service work on them. The newer models (mentioned here) also have better performance (power and filtration) but the D2 was an excellent vacuum and a work horse. Let us know if you have any other questions :) Thanks Dustin

GreatVacsCOM I inherited a d2 that was found in a closet under a pile of old clothes,it had never been used.it's been one of my dearest possessions, the best vac I've ever had.now hears the bad news,I lent it to my neighbor and he cleaned his car with it without putting any water in it and now it sounds like a jet taking off,is there any hope for my poor rainbow.

Pretty good comparison of the different Rainbow vacuum cleaner models. The SE is my favorite model. Parts are still available, the motor is powerful, and the hose and PN2 is a real improvement. Thanks for posting the video.

I also love the D4SE. I have one at home as my main vacuum. I upgraded the electrified hose and Power nozzle to the E2 set up. Great improvement on noise level and PN serviceability. I rebuilt the motor and have a spare. I cant imagine using anything else. No bags to buy and suction for days. Plus, great wet pickup in case of water incursion in my home.

I vaguely remember a travelling salesperson who sold one of these to my folks back in the day, only for my eldest brother to mess around with one of the attachments by trying to fill the soap spray container with varnish in an attempt to repurpose it as a paint sprayer.

Any children of the 80s have an eye twitch with that D4 model, remembering weekly chores and dragging that beast around the house risking your life bumping it into the walls? I can still hear my mom, “don’t scuff up my walls!! You pay attention to how you pull that!” 😅😅

Good questions :) We have also rebuilt and serviced the other brands as well. The other brands (all great vacuums) all use the Wessel Werk head and it is a quality head. Depending on the model I would say it is usually a toss up. The problem with those brands vs. Rainbow is parts availability because they are made in Germany. While Rainbow is made in the US and parts are easily found and Rainbow is more dependable. After the sale service can be spotty from the German vac

Thats right and great point :) The "SE PN2" and the "SE PE" are the same model. However most people refer to that model as the "SE PN2" but the "SE PE" is the same model as well. Good Point :)

@ClassicTVMan1981X thats a great question. As far as heads go it was not a bad one. Its weakness was its pivot assembly. It seemed that would be the first thing to wear out. Now of course parts are difficult to find for them. After that Rainbow started making its own power nozzle which turned out to be one of the best most dependable heads ever made. Part of its success was its simple design and it turned out to be very dependable. Hope that helps :) - Dustin

should have also mentioned the other big change between the D3 and the 4 was the power switch moved from the back to the top, and that therefor changed the inner design of the machine. The D4's carrying handle also was the 1st with a padded grip. obviously I know this, I was just putting it out there for everyone else.

So, I got a rainbow the other day where I work for really cheap. works pretty good, cleaned it up, but the canister is a D3 model, and the hose and vacuum attachment is the SE PN2. Runs fine, but just wondering if that could be an issue or not.

How about: D2 and D2A? The D2 was produced from 1974 to 1979, and the D2A from 1979 to 1980. The D3 was produced from 1980-85, and the D4 from 1985-90. The D2A was a stopgap model between the D2 and D3; basically, it's a modified D2 with the D3's motor unit.

@BubbaClemx66 $600 is still too much. I doubt they cost half that wholesale. Go to a yardsale/fleamarket in FLA and you can find 'em really cheap. My next door neighbors used to have a winter place down there a few years back and came home with two older chrome top models that cost them a whopping $200. I used to service them and the ones they had were in top condition.

I need help. I had a Rainbow vacuum which I took in for repair and I think the repair man swapped it out for another model. I need to identify what model I had. I bought it in the year 2000. I believe it had a plain handle and a black and gold label on it. The machine was grey.

@GreatVacsCOM Was the Eureka-made R-1024 power nozzle any good in regards to its usage on the D2, D2A and D3A canisters? The D3A was the only modern Rainbow to have this species of PN as an option (from July 1980 to March 1981).

Your right about the high price but even buying them from Rexair new they are totally worth it. We see perfect running Rainbow lasting 30+ years. Disposable vacuums other people buy last 2 years on average. How much money will you waste in 30 years on normal vacuums vs buying 1 vacuum like the Rainbow that also cleans much better? Thats whats great about buying a Rebuilt one from us where we are 1/3 of the price of new AND all our Rainbows come with the 5 year warranty.

Dustin: Your observations are vague. You tell us no *year* of manufacture, or how to identify a "D4, SE" or "later model"-or -whatever you are talking about? I used to sell these way back in 1973,,, when they had a chrome dome---before the "D3"...... I got a "D3" at a garage sale for $10. It works fine--I have replaced the brushes on a previous model I used for more than 20 yrs. They don't "filter" the air, it just dumps dirt into the water--only a hepa filter will capture fine particles....I've never used anything more recent than the"D4",,,I certainly would not pay the outrageous price---Look for one in a thrift store...
