    The 32X had so much potential. Sega couldve ported their entire arcade library to the tower of power trio and gotten closer to arcade perfect than ever before

    BTW, the SVP LockOn cart that you mentioned was already finished by the January 1994 CES ( when it was canceled and replaced with the $160 32X by SoJ). The price was just $49.95 and had four games in testing: Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing, Star Wars Arcade, and Daytona USA. There were also rumors of two other third party games developed for it. The shortage of chips from SAMSUNG would likely have forced saga to switch to the more powerful SuperH from HITACHI. Had sega done this we would have had an $50 addon by March 1994 that could draw 90,000 flat shaded polygons per second or 20,000 Gauroud shaded, textured polygons per second, as many as PS1 launch titles. We would've had 100+ titles out for the platform, and the Sega CD+SVP/SH2 would've had 18 months in the sun with no competition, a mainline Sonic title, and two full Christmases to get established.

    @@SEGAGuys Daytona USA, Star Wars Arcade, Virtua Fighter, and Virtua Racing were already finished, as well as two more rumored third party games. Added to the criminally underused Sega CD, an SH2 SVP LockOn cartridge would've put SEGA on top for another generation, but possibly made the Saturn unnecessary outside of Japan. 20,000 textured polygons used with 320x448i and Shadow Highlight Mode (256 colors out of 3,375) would've made the PlayStation unnecessary for most mid 90s AAA titles, and SEGA could've used SONY's quick-to-market publishing to put games in stores as soon as popular ones sold out. And the Neptune CD could be out in stores at $199 for Christmas of 1994, leaving nothing left for the sad competition.

    I often thought Sega should have done a lock on SVP but never heard anyone suggest it was actually planned. The extra colors weren't worth the cost/complexity of the 32x, but an SVP would have been great. I did like the 32x, but I would have been happy with the SVP Virtua Racing with the extra tracks. But I don't see how Daytona would have run on an SVP chip

    @@michaelpalmer2143 I believe that they would have to mix prerendered sprites, color cycling, and 3d polygons to make it all work.

    The key thing they right with Virtua Racing deluxe is they got the handling bang on, it controls like the Arcade game, physics are the same , sadly the same can’t be said of the Saturn and especially the PS2 version

    When I first saw the 32x as a kid I always wanted it especially when I saw games like Space Harrier , AfterBurner , my mind was like wow we’re gonna get so many great arcade port games but it was not meant to be and it’s a shame as I think there many games cancelled completely or moved on to the Saturn and one game I was looking forward to was Aliens vs Predator this would have been awesome on the 32x

    I liked my 32x and glad I bought one back (thankfully I never sold my Saturn stuff) before gaming got silly priced. Star Wars Arcade is good it’s just stupid hard. Virtua Racing Deluxe I have the Japanese cart these days as it saves your times. One of the best things about the 32x is it’s composite video support. You can get good picture on a CRT and all the dithering effects work as intended. It’s superior to using the mega drive alone as you get lots of rainbow patterns then.

    I love the 32X, and I know your all big Saturn fans but I often wonder what would have become of the 32X if it wasn't rushed to market to come out ahead of the Saturn that was also released early, I think Sega were way ahead of the time as now we have pluse and pro versions of consoles as a normal thing. In the end I think both the Saturn and the 32X had potential to complete but competing with each other hurt them both

    if more games had come to 32x at the quality of these 3, then it would have sold much better. Another great game is Shadow Squadron. That one just needed a little bit of polish and a story imo.

    While the 32x ports were great and worth owning the add on, the time and resources used to develop these could of been used for Saturn versions, VF1 might of been better, we would of got Virtua Racing Saturn developed by Sega instead of the port done by Time Warner, and lastly a Star wars game on Saturn which it never had, as good as these 32x ports are, they could of done much more with the Saturn *not to mention have more games at launch*

I’m sure you guys are using scart or component cables since the pixels are pretty clear with no rainbowing. It might just be interference? I love your vids, so figured I’d let you know. How the tables turn; I worked at Best Buy in late 1996 and they were attempting to clear new 32x consoles out for $19.99; they began to disappear at that rate, because prior to that final reduction they were collecting dust on the lower shelf not far from the big bargain bin with all of the 3DO games.

  • @Gamevet

    @@shiningphantasy1393 I picked up mine from Toys R' Us at that price. It's okay, but I do think that the games are a bit over-rated by fans. Space Harrier was an excellent port though.

  • @shiningphantasy1393

    @shiningphantasy1393

    2 ай бұрын

    @@Gamevet There were a handful of standout titles that were released; Space Harrier and Afterburner were both top-notch, Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter were good efforts but diminished at that time due to other versions released or on the horizon. Knuckles Chaotix is somewhat divisive but at least it is an original platformer with 32x worthy visuals. Doom and Mortal Kombat 2 have quality versions in the present after being capably modded, but that didn't matter back in 1995. Overall though it didn't sell for logical reason; better hardware coming in the not distant future, limited software lineup, and if you already did not own a Genesis the initial pricepoint wasn't all that affordable.

  • @Gamevet

    @@shiningphantasy1393 Honestly, 32x owners try to make Virtua Fighter sound better than it is. I had one guy, try to make an excuse for the Saturn version being inferior, because of the edge of the rings clipping. He also tried to say that it would cause ring-outs. Dude, you suck at the game. The Saturn game feels and sounds like the arcade game. The 32X version has Genesis sound chip farts for music.

  • @shiningphantasy1393

    @shiningphantasy1393

    2 ай бұрын

    @@Gamevet It might be a little bit harsh to compare the music to a Genesis Gems quality OST; I think the quality is better than that, but certainly not as nice track-by-track as the arranged music that the Saturn version had. I know that the first Genesis model had a better soundchip than the newer revised down models so that could factor in as well, but the 32x Virtua Fighter music doesn't sound bad to me or anything. It's not like Genesis X-Men craptastic audio (or similar) to give an idea. I kind of appreciate both of the versions more in hindsight as while I was right there when Virtua Fighter was released (worked in an arcade in 1995 with it staged directly across from the counter, but the crowds were all over Killer Instinct at that time) I didn't really fully get into the series until Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn came out and it further evolved; I kind of liked Tekken better at first, but that quickly evened out.

    The 32X CD combo was almost as powerful as the Model 1 arcade board and should've gotten all of those arcade ports, Virtua series, fighters, and jRPGs. A big investment, but would've worked if SEGA had kept the Neptune CD as their budget console.

    "But it did have some good games..." Yeah... games that Sega of America's 90s management made sure got on 32X because they wanted that platform to be highly profitable while they treated the Sega Saturn as an afterthought where they hoped shovelware like Bug! and later the skeleton or Bones game to become big sellers after they (Sega of America's management staff in the 90s) had starved the Sega Saturn of game software by rejection of a lot of Japanese Sega Saturn games. In other words if it was really true that "Sega of Japan" were the bad guys, they would have rejected the 32X and those three games your video is about would have made a far bigger impact on the Sega Saturn especially considering the power difference between the two and the fact that only the Sega Saturn was the true next gen hardware path. Actually Virtua Fighter 1 made and SAVED the Sega Saturn in Japan at launch by having it outsell the Sony PlayStation... Virtua Racing (by Sega CS1 Team NOT the TWI dev version) would have maintained the next gen feel on the Sega Saturn and Star Wars Arcade handled by a Sega Japanese dev team (not SoA STI) would have added the movie classic tie in that would have drawn the casual early adopters and felt way more next gen than it was on 32X by being on the Sega Saturn.

    The Saturn port of Virtua Fighter wasn’t bad, but almost 30 years of the same narrative being spun has taken its toll unfortunately. It was given a 9/10 by Edge and called “the first true next generation game”! It has flaws, such as polygon glitching on replays and character close ups, but in 1995 when you seen that in your home, it was mind blowing.
