Modding A Sculpt

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

One of the best ways to customize, modify or kitbash an object is to recast it in sculpture wax.
It can then be sculpted into whatever you can dream up.

    I have a corner of my front room (okay more like a1/4 of it) that's a pile of boxes, I use cardboard for armiture on sculptures, drip-catch table cover, and (lined w/duct tape) mold boxes, and a billion other things. I HATE using anything only once or for only one thing (except my fire extinguisher)

    Can’t wait to see the next update on this….. A electric cup warmer works great on melting wax. I use it for coffee and scented candles no flame 🔥 makes the candle last longer too with a nice scent.

    I usually build my mold case out of Legos, as they can be built to any configuration needed then broken down and reused. Have you looked into using jeweler’s wax as an alternative to sculptors wax? It’s nice and sturdy but you can carve it.

    I would not recommend jewelry wax for novice casters general waxes are easier to cast. The best casting method for easy changes is Chavant nsp or clay like moster clay that are made to heat very easily and cast the same, those do come at a price unfortunately but also have the advantage of being reusable🤙

    @@chrislastrange I use Chavant NSP as well and I love it, especially the hard version. I’m curious as to why you wouldn’t recommend jewelers wax? I have used it for small projects and it seemed to work fine. Is it a matter of scale, or is it more difficult to work with, for example needing a hot tool?

    @@gatblau1Good question: It requires more precise temperature when casting it to get a good copy, most have high shrinkage when casting 2%-5%, It costs more than other wax ,difficult adding wax to it after its cast depending on the brand but in most instances. My recommendation if someone wants cheap and good casting wax ,go support your local Bronze foundry as most will sell you the wax they mix and most of them have solid mixes that they have made for may years .Plus it's a fun workshop field trip for those that like knowledge or are curious about crafts🤙

    Seems like this could be a great strategy for kitbashing, since wax can be alot easier to cut effectively than printer resins. Mold model, cast in wax, chop and adjust, remold, recast. Oh, and that denatured alcohol trick is phenomenal!

  • @nekrataali

    And you can do a lot of it in a kitchen! I don't have the space for a lot of mold-making stuff, but with wax? Seems like you could do that pretty easily with a regular oven and tapping things to get the bubbles out.

    Well, I’d been putting off making some batch molds due to cost of materials, and I think this gives me a very good idea! And I’ve gotta say, after cutting hot glue seams, isopropyl alcohol is amazing. I now use a dropper bottle and just squirt it right down the seams, they pop apart like magic.

    There plenty of options for sculpting wax out there. Sculpture Depot in Loveland, CO has a good selection. Another option would be an alginate mold and fill with melted Monster Clay.

    Great video Robert! I’ve done a few casts with paraffin wax, never resin, so I didn’t think I’d need a pressure pot. Now I’m reconsidering. Bubbles have been a pain point, and it takes some artisan tapping/agitating to get them all out.

    You probably could. Also, since that's likely a one off mold that wouldn't be too bad. I think the only downside would be any moisture sensitive stuff. That's a great idea though and I'm totally going to try to use that for one offs instead now. Thanks!

  • @chrislastrange

    @chrislastrange

    I theory yes but you will have a difficult situation of heating up alginate for casting of wax/clay, as alignate is mostly water and the thickening algae powder you are going to shrink it when heating as it loses moisture. If at any point it gets too dry it will turn to powder and give you more headaches than help. My advice if you have your hart set on alginate or have budget issues. Use alginate ,cast a rigid copy not wax or clay .Carve it and do change with a rotary tool if you have one and build up with wax or sculpting clay of choice then create your final mold from that 🤙
