That was incredibly clean and clear for as much gain as it was pumping out. The tap into the clean channel no doubt was the key to that. Nice playing too.

Hmmm, they sound pretty good from the factory if you spend the time tweaking the knobs and maybe adding a good drive pedal (like an SD-1). Modifications will always make an amp sound better if you think it sounds better because they should get you closer to the sound you hear in your head. Keep in mind that he's demoing with active pickups that increase the gain too.

This amp is a beast! I have always hated the split (stock). The other day a good friend of mine bought for the 2nd time a split as it was a real bargain. He wrote me: " Do you want to mod it for me? Maybe sir34/36?" "Yes it requires some work but I can definitively do that, but it will cost you at least 2 pizzas!" Then he passed me today the link to this video. "Oooh Vale look it is great, do you know this guy's channel?" "Yes...maybe...not sure... I have watched "some" of his videos 😂" So here we go again... I will mod his split as you did in this video, thank you again for all the useful informations you share with us!

Great sounding amp! I'm sure it's due to the modifications you've done. Too bad you didn't have a clip of how it sounded pre-mod. I've never understood how so many players get such good sounds out of their 2205/2210 amps. I have a stock 1989 2210 and no matter how I set the EQ it sounds like a solid-state amp with a phony/bloated bass, flat/uninspiring mids and spikey treble with fizzy distortion. Not even close to my 1984 2204 and 1972 Super Lead amps. Your modifications have me intrigued! The decision I'm now facing is to ether modify it or sell it and pick up something else.

Thanks! None of these Marshall fx loops are that great to be honest. Even the newer reissue amps are pretty bad.

Pretty much sounding like this, maybe a few tweaks. I've posted the schematic of my mods on this amp on one of the amp forums, so I might as well just post it on my website too (along with my other mods that I have made public)

How important do you think the power stage mods are? Do you think it's worthwhile just to do the preamp mods you did? It made a huge difference to the amount of pleasant gain on tap.

The tone here is all in the pre-amp, a depth circuit helps give it low end kick but the gain is all in the pre

I have a ‘87 2210 - would it be better to mod as per your 2205 - or use as a donor amp / parts chassis etc for a take on your twin channel 2204 ? Btw - did you look at the loop on this as mine is unusable as stock .. Cheers and thanks for sharing info and practical advice - tempted to JLE my ‘78 2204 - I snipped bright cap as amp v bright - would it have to go back to get best from JLE mods ?

Hmm, maybe a 900 - SLX because that is tube amp...the straight up 900's have solid state gain stages and is not suitable.

I don't Know why you would say they are dreadful amps stock. The boost channel volume has to be on 10 and then add a boost pedal maybe a EQ pedal as well. The mod sounds better than stock definitely, but they are not dreadful amps.

I haven’t worked on one yet, but they are the backbone for the Wizard amps so hold promise. The issue with the reissue is that it’s all PCB which makes it a bit harder to mod.

Probably a kit, the Origin20 comes up pretty good but the cathode bias power section does add its own flavour to it.

I know a guy that has a 2205 for sale for a pretty good price relative to what they’re going for on eBay and reverb. The 2205 on this video is one of the best sounding jcm’s I’ve heard and if I could get that tone or pretty close that would be awesome. To do everything that you did to that 2205 what kind of price am I looking at?

These amps don't have a clean channel Marshall call it a normal channel so I don't think it was meant to be clean, the more the volume is increased the more it breaks up. Its a bit like a JMP1959 the way the channel works, more channel volume more gain.
