Let's remember that Paranoia was a thing of its own, in no way it could be influenced by S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Since STALKER came out in 2007 and this mod finished all development in 2005 with it's Stand alone release, as a mod, it was released in 2003, STALKER In its most archaic, Oblivion lost form, was only talked about in 2002 so I doubt they could have been inspired in any way by STALKER.

Stalker was originally a film produced in 1979 which was loosely adapted into the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl in 2007. So it is possible that the creators of Paranoia were influenced by the film in the same way GSC Game World was.

McNabbot If you actually watch the film you'll realize there's little in common between the STALKER movie and the games, even Less with Paranoia, If anything, I'd suppose the modders were being inspired by the book, which is a bit closer to the games ( the games were also mainly inspired by the book instead of the movie )

There were no Stalker books. There was a book Stalker took inspiration from which is called Roadside Picnic.

@@lancethaintle9070 In Russia there is a giant series of books that were made fater the game. (Something like a brand of official fan-fictionon based on the game, written by popular sci-fi writers). There is a similiar series of books based on Metro 2033 series (there are two initial books, and a book series) stalker-books.ru/catalog.php

@Shane Angus "Cheeki Breeki" is part of the phrase "a nu cheeki breeki vi Damke!" Which is a phrase commonly screamed by bandit enemies in STALKER games. It roughly means "One Two, I'm on Top!" which is a reference to checkers and possibly a term used for flanking enemies.

I love Paranoia despite how janky it is. It just that Gray sky, Gritty atmopshere, textures and metallic look and that 1990-2000 feeling era made it for me. Stalker also has this kind of atmosphere

Gotta say, I really like the new extensions to the titles. It gives a good amount of charm to the videos in my opinion.

For a mod, this game looks great! I looove the Gold Source engine. So nostalgic!

you played this mod!! I'm so happy now. This mod does really belong in that circle of Roadside Picnic esque games with its incredible atmosphere. And yeah it does have a really abrupt ending

Hey GG, thanks for reviewing a mod that I've loved for so many years. Still play it a couple times a year. Be sure to check out its sequel Paranoia 2: Savior and the amazing Underhell, HL2 mod.

I recommend these: Sweet Half-Life - A cool HL mod with some new weapons Half Quake Series - Like more dark and sadistc Portal, pretty hard though Poke 646 series - very good mods with great graphics taking place between HL1 and 2 with new character Timeline series - 3 mods where Gordon gets through various time periods Azure Sheep - A great mod where you play as another Black Mesa guard Wanted! The Western Mod - A decent mod that takes place on wild west Heart of Evil - Pretty funny mod that takes place in Vietnam, it's basically a long escort mission though HL Rally - Yes, someone made a racing game with HL engine Chthulhu - It's a pretty good mod in Lovecraftian setting Point of View - As title says, you play from different point of view of a Vortigaunt The Specialists and Natural Selection - Awesome multiplayer mods Mistake Series - Pretty decent horror mods Crack-Life - The most retarded, obnoxious and offensive mod in existence, but I loved it, there's a campaign mode now.

Poke646 and Poke646: Vendetta are among the best mods I have ever played. Wanted! is a very hard, but also fun mod. It is also quite long. I loved Chtulhu, especially because it has gotten a visual overhaul by a prominent Cry of Fear modder. Sweet Half life was not that good, it did not feel right and I never completed it. Heart of evil is not recommended. Its level design is insanely confusing and it lagged quite bad for me. Now I also got another mod to review: Operation Black Thunder: Remod. This one's also a great mod, in a military setting with some really cool action.

Glad to see you did a video for this game, as the very similar Cry Of Fear was done around a year ago by now lol

It's better to make a short, yet detailed mod with a lot of love put into it, than something like Hunt Down the Freeman and sell it.

I really recommend Underhell: Chapter one for Half-Life 2. Really over looked "mod".

We won't be getting the next chapter for a while unfortunately, since I believe they're moving to work everything onto a different engine, since somethingsomething-source-is-old.

Great little mod, totally agree with the zombie section not being long enough and the ending kinda bites. Theres no real resolution and it feels kinda rushed since your told you could be infected and need screening to confirm this, but this is quickly forgotten, and the science lady seems to be killed off screen at the end for no real reason. Regardless, nice 2 hours of game time.

I KNEW you were going to review this, I was literally playing this 2 days ago and said "I bet Ggman will review this after I play it."

Squad mates getting in _my_ way and then telling me to move? I feel like this game will give me nasty flashbacks to SWAT 4.

I was about to try it when I came across the VAC ban thing from this mod (It was actually from trying the OpenGL mod on the original Half-Life, if I remember correctly) so I can say this mod's name clearly describes my personal experience.

I remember playing this mod a couple years ago. I was browsing modDB for good half life mods and this one was somewhere in the middle of the page. Since all the others at the top didn't look to appealing, I downloaded this one. It was fantastic. I wasn't sure if it was a horror game or action game but damn it sure has its scary moments

When you first showed the gameplay of the exteriors at the beginning I honestly thought it was just STALKER. Pretty fucking impressive for a game made on this engine.

Paranoia was actually the first mod I ever played, and still pretty impressive back in 2008; I remember finding out about it from it winning Mod of the year on ModDB.

Well, this is not quite a Half-Life 1 mod (in was once, though) but a standalone game running on another game engine, Xash3D. And there is even a sequel to it, Paranoia 2.

I've had this mod sitting on my hard drive for the longest time (over ten years), and never got around playing it.

I first played this mod YEARS ago and I was super impressed by it... Specially the soundtrack which was made by a russian NuMetal band called "Слот". I just can't get enough of that snare.

Oh man, I remember this mod. Played it years ago, but I remember being blown away by the production values. My only complaint was the length.

I remember that when I first played this and stumbled over the zombies I was scared shitless, just because of the sound and visuals.. Also Creepy Monsters + Old, abandoned russian insdustrial complexes = scary as fuck

Paranoia was a legit 10/10 mod. I was anxiously anticipating the launch of this after first seeing it on ModDB for months.

You're telling me that this is a mod for half life 1? DAMN! it looks frikin solid! the amount of detail in the characters, guns and enviroments looks half life 2 quality! if it wasnt for the lack of shadows and lighting it would be hard to tell the difference

You summed it up pretty good for me the only disappointing thing is the short length it really end a bit unceremonious.

The metal music is from the Russian band "The Slot" This mod introduced almost everyone to them and their fame in the U.S. is almost exclusively by internet music clips. Very, very few people were able to grab some of their Russian albums before they stopped importing. They are worth a look and if you can find a translator to the lyrics most of them are very political. I'm glad I have at least 2 of their Russian albums with their English debut album. It's been years since I've played this and I'm still haunted by that banging on the doors when you first enter the painted hall. . .

I'm always tempted to try these Half-Life mods based on GGG's reviews but then I remember that in 20 years of trying I've never been able to stay interested long enough to complete the original!

So it's like Skyrim without Skyrim... good. 10/10 IGN

ahhh I remember this one.

He really nails this one, it's really fun and I love the models and atmosphere but as soon as you start getting really invested...it's over. Still worth a play though, most definitely, and if someone took this idea, fleshed it out, made it more focused on fighting these creepy monsters, and removed the squad based shenanigans, and you would have a classic.

Loved this mod, that is despite it would crash often...LOL. Reminded me of Stalker.

I don't know if you didn't mention about the enhanced version of the GoldSrc engine "Xash3D", but you kinda forgot the multiplayer coop version of the mod.

The coolest thing about this game is the fact that there's a dreamcast port... 5 years after the dreamcast was discontinued

I found this mod very unique. The atmosphere is just outstanding, it just have it's own soul. It's obviously inspired by stalker, but totally different. Also, I don't recognize ANY game ever, offering You playing a generic spetsnaz soldier, with bootcamp map, damn, whole game is based in Russia. I know, You play as a spetsnaz in bf for example, but it's not the same. Amazing soundtrack supplements this very interesting idea for scenario. There are tons of games, movies or books about us specops for example, but spetsnaz is mysterious, and that's makes it cool. Brings to my mind landscapes, of forgotten villages in deep Russia, under the coat of grey clouds, and sound of thunders without rain... Secret operations in places, that nobody even know exists... If somebody could catch this atmosphere, and pack it to one game, I will call it one of the best.

Still loving the comparisons of games to reuben sandwiches. I'm getting the feeling you like them maybe as much as I do.

speaking of interesting mods, could you review Underhell next? That's one of my favorite source engine mods.

There is also the Invasion and Black Star mods.

This mod still has better plot than S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky

When I played it ages ago for the first time I was so terrified and at one point I gave up and uninstalled it. Because in my mind I had idea that after finding the super terrifying zombies the horror is only going to excalate, and then later goes scripted moment that confirmed that bias. Little did I know that game got tame after that point instead.

Oh, cool! I played this a few years ago and it's pretty great. Definitely one of the best looking Half-life mods out there, at times it looks on par with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

The red mesa mod for half-life

Paranoia 2 is also very short and to be honest I didn't think it was all that great. It has really, really cheap enemies. You'll turn a corner and they'll have a guy there with a PKM who will mow you down in half a second. So you basically have to die to know to use a grenade there.

Did anybody ever play a HL mod called Sex Drugs and Beer can? It was the most outrageous full conversion mod I ever played.

Reminds me of the Russian answer to my favorite Half-Life mod Heart of Evil (HOE).

I’m 99% sure all of these weapon sounds are directly from Counter-Strike

They also made a port of this mod for the dreamcast (if im not mistaken)

the fact the zombies can't really take down you Armor just only your Heath but they hurt alot too like ones i try on hard difficulty they instally kill you with one hit like crazy.

I find it strange how a mod gives the Russians accurate modern equipment yet most AAA games insist on making the Russians use the the AK-47, RPD, and RPG-7 like it's the 1960's
