I guess the primitive nature of character modelling in half life 1 engine somehow manages to create a unique and creepy style that can not be generated by today's new tech. Sometimes the old is superior to the new... thanks for the review btw...

90's horror games are better than today's horror games,the low polyness and the low texture made it look 100x scarier than what you originally thought,the eerie feeling is always there, new ones looked too overdid.

Tbh, older games with low polygon monsters etc are far more effective than what we see nowadays. Games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Cry of Fear etc had monsters you can't tell what they even are or what they look like, and that is more effective than making an obvious-looking monster nowadays. It's just my personal opinion.

they are both different games tho. sure both are horror, but mechanicly cry of fear is much more different than afraid of monsters. AOM is less restrictive than COF in terms of items, and theres no stamina mechanic in AOM.

Honestly, I agree with Ggman's reviww of CoF, the movement is horrible although it makes sense story-wise, the inventory is pure shit, level design isnt that great and it has way too many jumpscares. Otherwise, I disagree, I loved the story, I loved Stig Sydtangen as Simon and the artstyle and atmosphere are great.

Tazamane you’re not getting the point, the whole cry of fear review he was saying how bad it was most of the time and this game he is praising most the time so it really seems like he likes this game much more but at the end of the video he says about how this is the padawan and cry of fear is the Jedi master which is an higher opinion he gave on it before because of the circumstances

It's actually thanks to AoM's nightmare level designs that I found an art medium that's fun to draw and never runs dry with ideas. All I did was start roughly sketching pathways, silhouettes and those eyes (that occasionally blink at you), throw on some crudely-written message that implies a philosophical thought ("what if?" Comes to mind) to a wall and voilà! Also, my art teacher thinks I'm a lunatic.

That is actually kind of what is going on if you were to believe endings 1-3 (the monsters were actually civilians/law enforcement or what have you that he was gunning down). Though ending 4 reveals he was basically hallucinating the whole thing in a drug induced dream because he overdosed.

They aren't even zombies (dev confirmed they're called "Twitchers") so David is likely just going through a whole "fight for his life" in his head while his physical body is literally fighting for its life, it's only when he kills off whats killing him (The Addiction) is when he finally regains control and survives the ordeal. The whole game is pretty much a metaphor for dying lol

The enemy movement is actually more terrifying than most of what you see today

Unsettling imagery, the kid must have been an interesting fellow. But I think those head ticks on nearly every enemy would make me feel nauseous before watching long, let alone playing.

"Melee combat has always been terrible in half-life engine games" Someone never played The Specialists! I really love Spike & Barley's LP of this mod, because they had a third guy play as the ghost of Leatherhoff and use server mod cheats to constantly harass and scare them. It takes the game to a whole different level when there's two players cooperating to survive and a third silent player abusing his god powers to terrify them. It'd be cool if that was the AoM experience everyone could have.

This is like They Hunger on steroids. I think this feels freaky and spooky than that !

The gangway with the white outlines reminds me of the HL1 Mod "Halfquake Amen", where basically everything was designed like that. Also in general very well done and it has a psycho/philosophical tone to it, that fucked with me as a teen.

So wait, did you like Cry of Fear? Your review of it seemed pretty unforgiving to me, and this one seemed much more lenient, yet at the end you stated Cry of Fear to be the master. I'm confused where you stand.

This mod is pretty good and all, but i recommend Cry Of Fear by the same dev team.

I always liked afraid of momsters better but thats just me. Out of all the hl1 and hl2 mods this is a first place holder, with nightmare house 2 being a close second.

A stray thought: any chance you might review Bungie's Marathon Trilogy? Since you're familiar with source ports, I guess you know there's a project called Aleph One that features updated versions of these games that work on modern PCs.

***** I agree, everyone gives credit to the DOS fps games for doing things that Marathon had already done. The Marathon trilogy is by far the greatest series of fps games ever made. Although I prefer the game play style of Doom since it's faster. But I grew up on Marathon and played it before I played Doom. Also it has imo one of the greatest sci-fi stories ever written. It's a shame Bungie's original members are mostly gone. Probably will never see such an amazing game series ever again.

The mod "Out of Hell" for UT04 is worth checking out. It's horror based like this one.

That's why they should have added blocking to melee weapons in Afraid of Monsters.

These mods are actually better than a lot of walking simulators the Vidya games press praises IMO.

I don't know as the graphics does make the monsters scary. Also seeing them twitch just looks creepy.

I love the honest review here. Not going completely crazy with the criticism and neither with the compliments. Just the things as they are. AoM has a lot of flaws but I really love the game. Something about just being dropped into the game, shoot stuff while you think what's really happening is a kind of horror I don't see often in games. Usually games go too hard with the story and leave the gameplay behind.

you should do a mod corner review of postal 2's eternal damnation.postal 2 is probably the last game to think about when creating a horror mod but hey someone managed to did it and surprisingly managed to get mod of the year.

You really should try out Out of Hell. It's a horror total conversion for UT 2004 with a very distinctive art style

My favorite let's play of this mod is the one on the Spike & Barley Play channel. Their second run through the director's cut is done with a 3rd player as David Leatherhoff stalking them throughout the game. AFAIK, that player was one of the mod makers.

There is no shame in using the infinite flashlight cheat in this mod.

I think you forgot to mention the batteries because the flash light doesn't last that long.

I think Grey is the only Half-Life horror mod that got melee right,it's actually too useful and after my first playthrough I rarely used bullets even though I had lots of them.

You should review Jurassic Park: Trespasser. It's a 1998 game based on the Jurassic Park license.

This is better than cry of fear to be honest I only played CoF like 3 or 4 times only but AoM:DC is much much better and I still replay it just for scares, thrills and suspense

Should check out Underhell. A mod for HL2. One of the best mods out there.

Melee combat in Half-Life isn't that bad, but in Afraid of Monsters it makes no sense. A knife shouldn't be so weak against a human-like enemy.

Four endings in total.The fourth ending must've taken some dedicated fans because back then you needed to get through the first three endings to get all the notes and then piece them together. Nowadays you can just google the answer.

Hoopla Awakening? Coastline to Atmosphere ? Strider Mountain? The Citizen? G String? Underhell? Dissolution? The Forgotten? Nightmare House 1 & 2? The Gate 2? Estranged? 1187? MINERVA? Riot Act? Day Hard? Water? Calamity? Eclipse? We may never know which one will be in the near future.

I liked both versions myself, but yeah the DC is better. This must be an updated version you are playing, see weapons I don't recognize.

the mod is fun but the version im played kinda hard as fuck thanks to the enamys being fast as weeping fucking angels and only having a knife dont know if it cause i downloaded the one from remod or what but it make it nearly unplayable thanks to them being that fast and not being able to take on 1 with out being taken down to 5 health and no healing anywhere

+Gggmanlives Yes, it's in my library, but whenever I start it up, it just goes straight to normal Half Life. I had read that about two years ago that there was some update on Half Life that broke some mods. I wasn't sure if it was just some weird thing with my computer or if it was something more universal.

Fun fact! It's actually me who came up with the name of both the game and the name of the main character in this game, I was just a teenager at the time. It's an old friend of mine who has developed this game all by himself.

GG, when i play any half life 1 mods my fps drops from 120 to 10, this happens when i get close or look at some type of light or turn my flashlight on, this happens too in half life, opposing force and blue shift but only with the flashlight. Do you know how to fix this? If yes i would be thankfull.

Gggmanlives I tested it and with what i could gather, it works, i disabled ''wait for vertical sync'' and it kinda stops lagging, but the sounds is laggy as fuck, I will try this with a mod, thanks again.

Basically: Really good mod, the only issues are due to Half Life's sucky engine. No fault on the developer for those things.

From the look of it, I think I'd be pretty bored while playing this mod.
