Mock Short Row Heel // Technique Tuesday
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This video demonstrates a sock heel that mimics the classic hourglass short row heel without the use of short rows. The same methods for modifying a short row heel for a better fit can be applied to this heel, as well. This heel can be used in cuff down socks or toe up socks.
This heel is a modification of the mock short row heel from The Sock Knitter's Workshop, by Ewa Jostes and Stephanie van der Linden. I made several modifications to the original process, which I found improved the result.

I can't believe content as high quality as this is available for free. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into these technique videos, Rox. They're not only incredibly helpful but also a pleasure to watch!
After two years… revisiting this tutorial. Roxanne, the more tutorials I watch - there is simply no one like you who can showcase techniques so clearly!! Thanks for this amazing service to the knitting community. ❤❤❤
This is why I love knitting...it's always evolving. I think if EZ were still alive, she'd be delighted that people are figuring out new ways to do things. Rox, you are a treasure. You approach knitting with such a great mindset. You're both technical without being pedantic with a mix of intuitive. Just my style. You're my go-to knitting resource!
....and I thought German short rows were easy! This is sooo much better. Thank you for your clear & comprehensive videos!
This is the first heel method I've seen that makes sense to me. Thank you
Wow. Thank you for this. I have ADHD and it’s common comorbidity - dyscalculia (dyslexia for numbers). I learned to knit at age 6. I’m a competent knitter who loves knitting, and especially handknit socks, but dyscalculia makes knitting socks nightmarish. I have several pairs of socks on needles - all of them stumped at the heel. I know how short rows work. I can knit short rows. I understand short rows. But I screw them up every time because I get lost and confused about where I’m up to, make a mess of it, rip undone, start again, and somewhere on the 4th or 8th time (depends how much patience and perseverance I have att), to save my sanity I give up, and put the partly knit socks aside. German Short Rows are the heel I’ve found to be manageable for me, but I don’t love them, I don’t love doing them, and I still make a mess of them. But I love knitting socks so sooner or later I am filled with hope and promise and start another pair from scratch - hence all my sock needles now have unfinished socks on them. It’s so frustrating and sad 😢 This method is fantastic. No getting confused about where that wrap is, or when to turn, or how many rows done etc. I love it. Can’t wait to try. But as I and my daughter have high insteps I’d better pay close attention to see how to combat the too tight fitting across the instep because I don’t like that - uncomfortable. If handknit socks should be anything, it’s comfy and snug but not restrictive! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you 🙏 ❤
Thanks for sharing. This makes perfect sense. I don't know why I've never tried it before. I think this might be a good heel to do on my mindless-socks-on-the-go socks. I like patterns that I can pick up and put down and not have to think about where I am.
Finally getting to test out this heel, and knitting it with dark wool and fine needles, on an overcast evening in a room with East-facing windows wasn't all that ideal. Picking up the purl bumps on the WS turned out to be far more nerve-wracking on the first try than it should be. However, I solved the problem by marking the stitches to be picked up by a length of waste yarn through the purl bumps on each side, making sure that I had the correct number before getting started on the second half of the heel. That way, if something's not on the lifeline, it doesn't get picked up. Thought I'd share this tip in case it helps anyone.

That’s a great suggestion. I was having problems with the bumps as well. This sounds like the ideal solution. Thank you!
Wow! A week later- I’ve knit both the heels using your Mock Short Rows.. wow what a difference & easy, quick. They fit perfectly. Game changer! Thank you! ❤️🧶

Wonderful!
This is a complete game changer for me. I’ve been struggling with a wrap and turn heel, and I found your video. Thank you so much!!
This has now become my favorite heel. Once you get the hang of it it's so simple with a perfect finished look.
Oh you are my heroine! For the first time I'm not afraid to try socks!! Thank you
This is simply amazing. I am finally able to figure out how to make the dreaded heel and its no longer dreadful. Thank you so very much.
The funny thing is, this is the first sock heel I _ever_ knit... that one time I was stuck sick in my student flat, bored out of my mind, had some yarn I had bought in a thrift shop, and decided to try knitting in the round from what I vaguely remembered from my knitting booklet (which had stayed at home). I had only sharpened wooden kitchen skewers for my needles, and made it up as I went... ... the short of it is, this is exactly the type of sock heel you invent when you're only familiar with modern machine-knit socks but also have no idea yet that short rows are a thing. :D I have since graduated to other heels, because exactly as you say - these can get tight. But I was suuuuper proud of myself for figuring it out, so I'm still fond of this one!

I know what you mean. I just started doing socks a week or two ago. For years I was too intimidated to try them. But all the while wondering if a heel could be done this way, and it can. I did a pair of socks with the heel and gusset and they turned out good. Then I made a similar one as this (shadow wrap heel), but I don't like how they form a ridge line on the inside, so I'm going to rip that out and will try it this way next, except I'm going to slip the first st on every row, then pick up those sts (since they'll be easy to see) when I get to that part.
You are wonderful! You have explained so many things that I just didn't fully understand about what was happening while making socks. Thank you.
Omg, this is the best heel ever!! I’ve only been using the gusset/heel flap because the others seem complicated, but I did this one first time just perfect. Thank you thank you thank you!
I just LOVE your socks videos. Actually , all your videos, but the socks ones just amazes me SO MUCH! Thank you for sharing all this knowledge with us!

You are so welcome!
Your method is so simple to follow and yet so effective. Only problem I had was on 2nd half of heel picking up stitches at the ends. I used a crochet hook to do it and it made it so much easier!!! I highly recommend trying it this way! Thanks again Roxanne.😀
This is one of the easiest, best heels and it looks good as well! Exactly what I needed. I always struggled with wrapped short row heels, as I just could not see the wraps on fine sock yarn.

This was amazing thank you. I’m just starting to try to knit socks and I’ve been overwhelmed by all the types of heel. This was my favourite.
Can’t wait to try this mock short row heel. Thank you for the demo Rox!
WOW! LOVE this! Thanks, Roxanne.
There are some knitting videos I subscribe to for entertainment. But the best area like yours, those which are clearly instructional and understand the dynamics and metaphors for teaching how-to. You're a pro!
As a novice knitter, I found the afterthought heel to be my favorite because it is knit exactly like the toe! :)
Great video! I'm working on socks now, going to give this a try. Thank you for showing there are so many options.
Thank you for making sense of this heel and making it so easy, cheers 👍
Thank you for sharing this beautiful and helpful tutorial ! 😊💗
Such very clear and concise instructions. Thank you 💕
Thank you for showing us different techniques to suit our project.
This is brilliant! I love how the horizontal and vertical stitches so elegantly and subtly intersect into one another.
What a well-made video! I am going to have to catch up with some of the previous ones. Thanks!
I'm getting ready to do my heels, always scary for me hahaha (worked 2 separate socks up to the heel on magic loop) and just found this tutorial. Love it! You are so easy to follow and I've decided to try this technique instead of the German short row that I usually do. I always enjoy your videos because you are so clear, so technical but sooo easy to follow. I love details and you are a master when it comes to details! Thanks so much Roxanne for your patient way of teaching.😍 hope it works as easy as you teach it, wish me luck🙏
This video is brilliant! Thank you so very much! I appreciate all your hard work and effort putting this fantastic video together.
I just can’t wait to try this heel! I was coming to KZread to rewatch last week’s toe video, needles and yarn in hand. Now I can try a new heel on the same sock! I will for sure be adding a small gusset- so many new things to learn👏👏 I’m casting on these socks just to give me something fun to do when I’m tired of the sweater I’m working on for FIF. Have a wonderful week!🥰
This was really interesting! I will definitely rewatch the video and maybe I’ll make a swatch too! Thanks for another great tutorial!
You are the best teacher , I can follow you because you make it so clear, thank you for posting all your videos! I have learned so much from you, Was having a lot of problems with the heel in a Christmas stocking, am going to do your heel instead! Hope I can do it!
I love this,I have watched dozens of tutorials and this is the first time I have seen this. Thank you..👍
Amazingly clear instruction, as usual! Many thanks. You’re a gift to us knitters!
Very interesting technique. Thanks again Roxanne for opening my horizons. I quite like the lokk of that Mock short row heel, and the fact that there are no holes.
Your new office looks very nice. I especially liked the jars on the top shelf that framed your head. You really think of everything...
Thanks so much for your tutorials. You explain things in a clear and concise way. This episode was so very helpful!!
Great technique that I am going to use on my next pair of socks. Thank you!
I have been look and looking and looking for this very technic!!!!!! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!
Love the simplicity of this stitch. So glad I subscribed to your channel
Such a great technique! I look forward to trying it. Thank you!
How did you know I wanted a nicer (OCD) heel? Thank you for making my new pandemic skill fun and interesting!
It is a really great idea. especially the way you pick up the purl bumps. And I love the fact that with my German short rows, I still get some little holes, I do not like, and this solves it. And the adjustment later on in making the heel longer. Great.
Love what I see in this type of heel. I have been recently knitting toe up socks and am still experimenting with heels. Definitely want something with no holes. I do have a high instep so I’ll have to keep that in mind. Great technique!
I have been looking for a good video long time. Roxanne you are the best teacher. Thank you so much
Fantastic technique. So many heels to sort through, double stitches, wrapped , this looks like an excellent suggestion to get past the heel on a first sock . Thank you for showing this. Office is really coming along :) noticed some additions since last video
I used a strong heel increase for 2 sts on each side and then did this mock heel. Love it!!
Thank you for the great tutorial. I have tried numerous heel techniques without success but I got this one down on the first try. Now I can go ahead and churn out the Christmas Stockings for the holidays!!!
Wow! I prefer a garter stitch heel but I suck at short rows. This heel looks so easy and no short rows to get lost in. I can't wait to try it! Thank you!
Good Morning Roxanne: Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of knitting. I have knitted many different heels for socks, but have never seen or heard of the mock short row heel. I am going to work up a sample. It looks easy and neat, no holes. Have a wonderful day!
This idea is genius. I’ve never finished a short row heel successfully. I’ve ended up with odd gaps and holes or lost count of the sequence for leaving stitches not worked at the end of rows. I actually think I can do it using the idea. Thank you!
Will definitely try this version. I usually do fish lips heels which I like. I do like that there are no gaps in this heel. Thanks for the idea xox
Very similar to a heel pattern on Ravelry that is for sale but no video for that one and I mess up on the second half every time. Thank you so much for this video. I'm going to do this heel for my next pair. You videos are the best, Roxanne--so well done and your instructions are so clear.
What a nice heel without any holes! I'm going to try this technique now. I hope my socks turn out better with it. Thank you so much for your clear explanation. Greetings from Buenos Aires.
I think this is ecstatic l exactly what I've been looking for! Thank you, I cannot wait to try it!
thank you for that videos. The heels looks fine! And it also seams to be easier to knit it! Great!
I’m nearly ready for the heels on my current socks. Will give this a try! Thank you!

Have fun!
This is wonderful! I usually do a cut in heel . I knit some plain rows before decreasing. I hope this is deep enough for me. I have narrow but sorta pointy heel:) Thank you! It is worth a try for the sheer simplicity of it.
I LOVE this heel! I use chiaogoo sock needles and most other heels require extra needles. This one does not! I can do the heel fairly easy without extra needles. Finding the garter bumps is a bit challenging. I can feel them and guesstimate where I need to put the needle, but I think I might try stitch markers until I figure that part out better! So easy! Love this! Thank you!!
Ty so much for this amazing heel , I have to try this tonight.
Now having said this I also had troubles picking up correct amounts of stitches after heel turn (garter stitches) while making a more traditional sock. Practice, practice, practice. Thanks!!
I love this tutorial. Thank you.
Your explanations are so nice and clear. If I can knit it thank you you…
I love this!! Can’t wait to try it!! Thank you.
Another super simple (I think!) heel method to try. I love how clear your tutorial is and the examples you show. Many thanks, l can't wait to try this one!
What a great idea! I have never liked the other ways to knit heels, and now I will relax and knit down the cuff, not dreading the heel. Thank you!
This is going to help a lot. Thank you.
Thank you so much your technique is easy and pretty
Excellent demo. It looks so much easier then the fish kiss lip heel. This will help a lot with yarn that is a dark colour.
Excellent tutorial!
Very clear and helpful!
You are a genius!! I'll take this way for my socks because I hate w&t. Thank you so much! :)
Thank you really very much for you video, it helps me and now I can knit correctly the heels of stocks.
I absolutely LOVE your videos! You explain so clearly and in such detail while showing exactly what you're talking about. Fantastic teaching technique 🥰 I've been knitting for many long years but I'm still learning new things from you. Thank you so much!!! 💗
Brilliant video.Thank you🙂
I've never seen this technique and just love it!! I have to try it!!

Go for it!
Thank you very much you made heel knitting much easier for me💕💕🤩🤩🤩
OK!!! I have completed the first heel . Fits perfect! It will be the go to heel for me. I have tried so many. Landed on the afterthought heel a few years ago and stayed with it. It was easily adjustable for any sock yarn thickness. I am really loving this heel. Thank you so much! Cheryl
I need to try this method. Looks great!
This is like a mix of German short row and a heel flap. You made a German short row flap and then turned and picked up stitches. I have to try this. Thank you!!
I used this heel to make mini Christmas stocking heels as the circumference is so small in mini stockings. This heel worked great, easy to remember In order to avoid holes, I picked up some extra stitches going back in the round, like M1R or M1L then used K2Tog or SSK. I’m using a cotton/acrylic blend size 2 yarn on size 3 dbl points and this mock short row heel was a game changer. I usually use stainless steel needles but was glad I still have some bamboo needles for this task.
Thank you! I can't wait to try this since heel flap and turn and also the after thought under my belt I will have this one to practice which is different than the other German Short Row I watched. I am think that size is important and taking good measurements will help along the way when it comes to making gifts that fit nicely for the more luxury yarns used for sick making.
Perfect timing. I'm just ready to do my heel on this sock. I prefer the feel of the short row heel over the peasant heel, but much of my knitting is done on the go and short rows don't travel well in the middle on dpn's when it's toss and run. I know they're the same shape, but they feel different to me.
Love it Rox. Thanks!
I may have to try socks again. I get so frustrated with the heel. I haven't even attempted socks in 2 or 3 years. This looks so doable. Thank you. 💕
Excellent video. Thank you.
Oh I like this technique and will use it soon.
This makes for a very tidy heel indeed. I may try it but I'll have to follow your video for the first few times because I won't remember all the little nuances. For the past few years I've been doing the Kirby Wirby heel which is probably the most simple yet effective heel. Funny how I'm still looking for better ways to do a heel even after years of experience knitting socks!
Thank you so much for this video!
Brilliant. I just did a SRH & I wasn't pleased with the holes from wrapping. This is much better.
Thank you so much… I’m gonna try this with my next pair of socks! 😊
Thank you for this tutorial !!! I will definitly tray iut this heel !!!
This looks amazing. My german short rows are a mess and my afterthought heels ALWAYS have holes 😢 . My current project is almost ready for a heel and I was planning a pinned short row heel but I think I've changed my mind and I'll be trying this. Thank you so much Roxanne.
I just succesfully tried this out on my first sock! I find it quite a bit easier and nicer-looking than German short rows, which I tried out yesterday and frogged today. Your tutorials for both techniques are perfect though, you are an excellent teacher. After the German short rows experience I wanted to try out a heel that did not involve double stitches, heh. And I am asking myself now why anyone would want to do that when they can just do this! But it's like you always say, there are always different ways to arrive at a given result in knitting, some fit certain people or situations better than others, and it's always worth trying them out and understanding them in order to improve one's skills. Thank you again for all the amazing content!
I am trying this on my next pair! I normally do short rows but I always have problems with holes. Thank you!
Fabulous! Thank you.
