German Short Row Heel: How to Knit a German Short Row Heel for a Sock - Step by Step - Wendy Poole
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video, I’m demonstrating step by step, how to knit a German Short Row Shaping heel for a sock using the magic loop method of knitting. I’ll also show you how to close ankle holes that can appear at the side points of the heel, where the heel section joins the upper foot on the main sock, which can happen with and Short Row Heel Style Sock.
When I’m using the Magic Loop method of knitting socks and using standard (UK) 4 ply sock yarn, I like to use a size 2.5mm / 80cm length circular needle, but if you are using this method for your own pattern, you’ll need to follow your own patterns “materials” requirements.
Yarns Used in the Videos:
Purple Striped Sample Sock - Stylecraft, Head Over Heels , 4 ply Sock Yarn.
Pink Striped Socks - King Cole - Zig Zag, 4 ply Sock Yarn (Petal).
In this video I’m using the Magic Loop method of knitting, but you can equally use Double Pointed Needles (DPNs), using 5 needles, (stitches distributed over 4 needles and 1 working needle), and work across 2 needles for the front of the sock and work across 2 needles for the heel section.
TIME STAMPS
First section stitches: 02:36
Central Rows: 15:00
Final section: 21:00
Fixing heel point holes: 30:10

Thank God! I was about to give up learning this technique. I knit right handed also and all the videos I found used continental knitting, which made harder for me to see what they were doing. And your words were so clear, and the video isn't full of faff. Bless you!
At last!! someone has created a video that shows and explains the German short row EXACTLY, tiny step by tiny step. I've watched other GSR videos and have been so discouraged by the complexity of it all. You've simplified the process, Wendy, so beautifully that I now think I could actually knit a German short row heel and not mess it up--as I've done trying to follow other GSR videos. Thank you so much. (Wendy, your channel is the FIRST knitting channel I have found worthy of subscribing to.)
Fantastic video, this is the best explanation of German short row heel that I’ve seen. I’m knitting socks right now and am anxious to finish them so I can try this method.
This is the best video out there for German short row heels. It’s easy to follow and accurate. This video is exquisite
I so appreciate this extremely helpful and detailed tutorial! Thank you for doing this!
OMG, thank you, wonderful woman! I've watched countless tutorials by much bigger knitting KZread channels and this is the first one where I was actually successful executing the instructions. Thank you for presenting this in a simple straightforward way and demonstrating in a manner that was very easy to follow. This honestly made my day!
very helpful - so glad I found you. Thank you
Wow!! This instructions really help me to understand how to do this heel,. I always can do toe up and cuff down,. But when it comes to doing the heel,. I get lost .. 🤦😝😜. I do want to thank you so much for explaining it to me,... 😁☺️😊👏👍♥️🧦🧶 Your and awesome teacher...👍👏😊☺️♥️
Wendy, this is the best GSR I’ve seen. It’s so clear and visual. I’m ready to start the heel!

Oh, my goodness! This is a fantastic tutorial! I've mainly done the heel flap and gusset technique for my first few pairs of socks, and I wanted to try something that looked a bit more streamlined. This was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much for the in-depth, step-by-step tutorial! It was wonderful! ^^!
Hi, Wendy! This is the absolute best demonstration of the GSR technique! Thanks SO much AND for the clear photography and detailed explanation! 👍🥰

Best instructions EVER for a beautiful sock heel. I’m doing this. Thankyou, Wendy
Thank you so much for these fantastic instructions using the English style of knitting.
This is the BEST tutorial I've seen. You explain the how and why's the stitches work, very easy to understand with excellent visual. I am very new to knitting and have watched over 50 hours of GSR heel tutorials. Gave up. Followed yours and voila, completed my first heel. I appreciate the work in making this tutorial. Thank you.

Wendy really has done a superb job with this video. I feel the same way about it and I'm ready to start my first GSR heel.
Great tutorial that I will definitely use. It's too late for the 2nd sock of a pair I'm knitting now, but I'll definitely try this. I see at least 4 improvements over my typical GSR heels: 1) you use a balanced approach the the GSRs by slipping purlwise wyif on the purl side and pulling over the top, but slipping P-wise with yarn in back and pulling down and back on the knit rows, which is different from any GSR heels I've seen/done in the past; 2) doing two regular rounds after the first set of short rows is complete seems to help stabilize the heel join before starting the GSRs to increase the heel; 3) K through the back loop creates a directional slant that helps the curve of the heel, and 4) your method of closing up the holes (which I seem to have no matter how many heels I try) is the best yet simplest I've seen. This is making me want to put other queued items aside to try this heel on my next pair of socks! Thank you!
I’m new to sock knitting and I began watching a video showing GSR. It frightened me to death. Your video is excellent. I might even give it a try

Hi Carole, thank you and I’m really glad that you’ve found it helpful. Happy sock knitting. 🧶🧶
The best short row German heel tutorial thus far. Repetitive explanations helped me. Way less complicated explanations than the German video I watched first. Thank you❤
Fantastic tutorial!! Thank you for going so slow and repeating your steps! First time I’ve actually understood how to do this! I’m definitely subscribing to your channel! Thanks again.

Excellent video Wendy! You explain it so clearly and make it easy to follow, thanks! I will start my heels now. I am always so nervous at this point to mess up as I find it quite challenging to fix mistakes with double stitches. Here I go 1-2-3 charge😅
I've paused half way through because I had to tell you how pleased I am to find you. I've always done heel flap and gusset and wanted to try short rows. So many videos I've watched that just did my head in lol. You teach so well and so clearly. Your in the uk and you knit the same style as me!! Your way is completely different than others I've watched & makes so much sense. Thankyou. You have a new sub!!... right I'll finish the video now! Xxx

Thank you Wendy. This video is my go to video whenever I make a heel. Your stitch my stitch tutorial allows me to follow every step of the way. Thank you again!
Excellent tutorial, very clear, thank you 🇦🇺
Thank you for a very clearly stated and demonstrated video. The music played in the knitting intervals is pleasant and not too loud, which is one of my pet peeves. I'm interested to see how this heel fits my foot compared to the other types of heels I've tried.
Thank you! Very clear and helpful.
Hi Wendy, I had got a bit confused at one point but your instructions are so clear and easy to follow - sorted in no time!
Wow, you are amazing. I felt so comfortable in learning the German Short Row Heal through your teachings. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you so much Wendy! So clear for me now! Well, well done!
Brilliant! So clear and easy to understand. I'm ready to have a go now.
Great demonstration!
WoW Wendy! To think I was ready to toss out my cuff down W&T Christmas Stocking. It was awful. Your clear precise directions saved the stocking stuck at the heel with Wrap & Turn huge holes ! I appreciate you so much
Thanks so much. I've been following another tutorial but got really confused when it came to the heel. I'm glad I found someone who doesn't knit Continental.
Superb video ❤
Fabulously explained. Thank you sew much.
This was so so helpful. Thank you
Another incredible video. The colors are so helpful to see the difference!!!! THANK YOU!!!

Thank you!!
Thank you so much! I’ve only made one pair of socks, and it took me three years to complete! That was about seven years ago! I hated the heel turn, it was quite intimidating to me. But, after watching your tutorial, I think I might be ready to try making another pair of socks, but this time using the German Short Row heel! Wish me luck!😊
very very well explained i am french but i did understand with your video merci wendy
WONDERFUL instructions! I've done GSR but usually holding my breath that I've done it correctly. But watching your video made it real clear!
I have to try this. I've made a bunch of socks, but lately, the heels are looking messy. This looks like a good solution. Thanks.😂
Hi I love your tutorial and wonder if you also have written instructions, so next time I don't have to have the video on. I realize this is a long shot.
I’ve never seen a better example wow
For me, this is the best demonstration of double stitches. I’ve followed other demonstrations but the knit side has always been kind of loose/weak. I’m going to try this again using your method
This is the clearest explanation and demonstration I've seen, thank you so much.

Thank you soooo much for your video! I tried following 2 other videos and just couldn't get it. I hold and throw as you do, so it was easy to understand what you did. I was literally ready to just throw in the towel, so to speak...
Thank you for the tutorial - after working both heels and toes with your step by step instructions, I still get two different looks on each side of the sock. I notice in the video you do not compare the straight knit double stitches with the K Tbl double stitches. Is there any way to get a uniform look on both sides of the heel? Does it matter that I am a continental style knitter?
This video is SO helpful! It would be even more so if the “10 seconds forward/backward” buttons were available.
Nice
Brilliant tutorial, thank you. Can I ask the purpose of the double stitches?
Thank you so much this it is the best tutorial l have seen, can I apply the same to work on a 9 in new circular? 🙏
This is a great clear video thanks. Do you have written instructions at all to support it? Checked your website but could only see the wrap rather than double stitches. Thanks
Thank you so much!!! Can you use this method if knitting two socks at a time?
Maravilhosa técnica de fechar os buracos que ficam... parabéns e obrigada...👏👏👏👏🙏
Great video! First time doing short row heel. Need help already. I have 64 sets on for my sock. So half of that is 32. So how do I split that to start short row heel. ? Thanks a lot.
It looks like you're doing just a yarn over on the knit side rather than pulling the stitch. Is this right please?
What if your now using a contrasting color? Would you still do a plain knit row for the first pass?
I've never worked this type of heel before. Can you tell me what the final increase row should be? It's not clear to me whether you finish on a knit or purl row as I seem to have finished all increases on one side but not the other other. Many thanks.
Hi! What size needles did you use here? Thank you. ❤
Wendy, do you prefer GSR heel more than Wrap and Turn heel, or not?
I just finished my 2 heels following your simple explanation! Thanks! I am just wondering why you go through the back of the double knit- side stitches, as some others just knit them off through the front? I found them the most challenging part.
@WendyPooleKnits

Hi there, we’ll done in your sock knitting. The reason I go through the back of the double stitch is to make the double stitches lean with a left slant (leaning outwards), which makes the sock heel look neater. Hope that helps. Well done again and enjoy your sock knitting.

Thanks for getting back to me with the answer! Happy knitting!😀
Also, how is a Wrap and Turn heel different to Fish Lip Kiss heel? I tried both and they both make wrapped stitches. So I’m curious what makes them different??
Making the double stitch, I see two legs, but I don’t see any wrap.
Non capisco come arrivare alla fine del tacco ....forse devo lavorare l'ultima maglia avvolta a sinistra poi completare il giro e iniziare lavorando la maglia avvolta che avevo a destra....???Grazie.
That’s made it clear, but that method won’t work for the pattern I’m using. Thanks anyway!
complicated
This is absolutely brilliant!! Best GSR tutorial ever 🌼🧶
