Mobile Wood Carving Desk! Whittle Wherever You Want!

I live in Florida and my carving desk is in the garage, so needless to say it gets really hot in there. I still want to carve, but I want to do so indoors with the AC so I don't end up profusely sweating creating videos for you in my garage.
So this lead to me making a portable wood carving desk! I can sit it on the kitchen table, the counter, folding tables, or just lay on the floor. It only took me about 40 minutes to make and cost less than $50. Hopefully now I can carve more comfortably and make more videos for you!
Let me know in the comments below if you want a written instruction on how to make this table! I'm sure I can get a drawing and instructions whipped up for you.
Size of the wood and other supplies I used:
Base - 20 inch x 3 ft pice of pine
Sides - 5.5 inch x 5 foot cut to length (you can use 6 inch or wider wood too for more of a wall)
Screws - 1.75 inch self tapping wood screws
Wood glue
drill gun with drill bit and screw head
circular saw
Blue craft mat
magnets
superglue
Tape measure
Pencil

I am massively disappointed that you didn't carve it out of a single, gigantic piece of wood. ♥

This is cool! Looks sturdy enough to attach a camera arm to hold your camera or phone for overhead shots of your projects.

I had a beer flat that I used, it was similar, but wood chips still go everywhere. I got a Whittlers apron, it has a hoop to make a basket.

Nice work! I use a carving apron that has a pocket on the bottom with a plastic rod in it that keeps it open. I can sit in a recliner, and it catches all the shavings. It has Velcro on the sides so when I'm done, I stand up, open one side and shake the shavings into a garbage can. I don't recall where I got it off hand, but I did some searching online and looks like TreelineUSA has the one with a leather patch on the chest in stock. The canvas only version appears to be sold out.

Love how simple and easy it is to make, with the dimensions on screen it will be easy to replicate and use, but I may make a 24" wide one instead.

Great idea Brian, I'm in Florida too (Pinellas County) and it's been a hot summer for sure. Planning to share this on my next Woodcarving Weekly KZread post and encourage viewers to come and take a look. 👍

just stain it with some natural oil or varnish and it would be perfect. and maybe a little bit of polishing before that with 180-360 sand paper wouldn't be redundant.

Great idea, have you thought about a piece of waffle print shelf liner to set it on so that it doesn’t slide around the table surface. Love the idea of the laminated panel rather than plywood that would need to be cut to size.

Great idea, but for different reason. January in Alberta, Canada and its -20 to -30 outside without the wind (@ -4 to -22 F). Same idea as the A/C thing, just the other end of the spectrum (sweating bad...frostbitten fingers....)
