Mobile Antenna Placement. Where to put them & why.

Sometimes you have to do what you can do. And optimizing your transmission signals is one of the best way to get your TX out further. It’s all about antenna placement.
Watch this video and let’s discuss where we should mount our mobile antennas, and what happens to your signals in different locations on the vehicle.
Let me know in the comments where you have your antennas placed on your vehicle.

The angle on the K40s are on a angle, you only do that to with 1/4 wave antennas, I use roof mounted puck in the center of the roof and the dual band antenna 14" behind, drilled through the roof using a SO-239 connector

I mounted my striker all the way to the end of the tailgate of my F-150 driver side just only for the style and put my American flag I don’t use my cb anymore i use gmrs midland which i can pick up more channels.

I am the opposite, I like my HF antenna in the back and my vhf/uhf in the center. Since I use HF for getting the furthest ground wave propagation I like to maximize my gain by using my vehicle groundplane like a beam

Yeah , it’s what works for you and more power to you. If in the back aims your signal where you want to work DX that’s a great way to run it. Thanks for the comment. 73

Most truck drivers put them at an angle to avoid vibration big antennas on your mirrors will start vibrating sometimes

I take it that it has to be continuous metal? In other words, the hood is metal and you have no trunk. So the Stryker SRA 10 is centered on the roof and not on the car? Also, what if your car is made out of aluminum? Is there alternatives? Thanks for the video and information.....

Center on roof of cab on truck, center on roof of car. If you have an aluminum f150 well I would get the truck mounted version of this antenna and mount it behind the cab in the bed. Put and braided ground strap to the chassis. Hope this helps

I had the antenna vertical with 1.1 SWr Then I located it 45degrees forward and oh man The SWr went crazy 🤪 Almost impossible to get it near 1.5 😩

That’s just a fashion trend. Put it up vertically and you’ll be alright. 73.

Quick question, if you have a sunroof do you center it on the remaining roof to the back? I assume you loose some ground plane with the glass of the sunroof. Thanks, KF0NRP

Good question. I would have to agree with you. And I would also say to experiment with different placements. Not knowing for sure. I would say your idea is probably the best. The rest of the vehicle will also have an effect on your reflection. But always whether to the back or from center is always the best. But in some cases not always feasible.

Do you know if the signal come out of the coil and the whip or just the antenna

From what I gather all of it. Bottom fed coil usually have your signal travel more upwards and out.

Truckers that mount their antennas pointing forward at an angle know that at 60 MPH the antennas will be pointing straight up - the ultimate position.

Me personally I’m not vain about it. Don’t care. But the alternative is. Drilling a hole 🕳️ through the roof and using a NMO mount. It’s a clear installation, and wires easily hidden inside the vehicle

So most vehicles are rectangular in shape. Thus, having your antenna in the center of your roof puts most of the metal of your vehicle to the front and back. Your strongest signal is front to back and less side to side. Moving the antenna to the back of your vehicle puts most of the metal to the front. Your signal will be strongest to the front of your car. Wherever there is the most metal is where your signal will be the strongest so be careful where you position your vehicle antenna.
