This has got to be one of my favourite Disney films now!! I just loved how healthy the way some of the characters treated each other were and how much heart is at the core of this story. Exactly what I hope for when I watch a Disney film. Enjoy :)

Fact: at first Hei Hei was to be strict and lecture Moana all the time, but the creators disliked this version and almost excluded the character from the movie... until he was transformed into provably the dumbest Disney character ever. And they celebrated it with a roast chicken (of course)

Interesting fact: the real Maui from Polynesian folklore did do all those things Maui sings about in You Welcome, but he did it not for narcissistic reasons but because out of his many siblings he was the only one not born with godly powers and was thus excluded by his brothers from coming along on their fishing trips. So Maui did all those things to prove himself to his brothers and parents.

As someone from New Zealand who grew up with Maori/Polynesian culture, the small and thoughtful details in this movie blew me away. The use of native Polynesian actors and talent, the various Poly languages used throughout, the bits and pieces of this culture and that woven together to make Moana’s version. Maui himself is a real demigod for many (if not all?) of the Polynesian cultures and his tattoos/feats from “You’re Welcome” are literally myths and legends of his that I grew up with. The island he pulled from the sea is the creation legend of New Zealand! Our South Island was his canoe (waka), and the North Island is the stingray he fished up (Te Ika-a-Maui, The Fish of Maui).

It's not that no-one knows, its that we can never be certain. It was most likely simply natural climate shift, the transition from La Nina to sustained El Nino in the South Pacific rendering ancient ships useless. There are of course other theories relating to the culture shifts between isolated islands, lack of materials, e.t.c but the changing climate making it far more difficult for ancient peoples to navigate the ocean is the most likely explanation and there is some evidence to support this. @@saiyasha848

The ocean being harsh and unkind is very purposeful in this movie because with Moana’s dad it needed him to stay on the island to have Moana. When Moana asks the ocean to let Te Fiti come to her, when she walks to Te Fiti unarmored and unarmed, she is telling Te Fiti that she trusts Te Fiti not 5o hurt her, that she knows Te Fiti is not a monster; that Te Fiti has had something terrible done to her, that she has been dediled and violated but that, beneath the rage and grief and pain, she is still a good being, that she is still Te Fiti.

Bit behind, but... In regards to TeKa being Te Fiti; something that a lot of people seem to forget is that the soil left behind after a volcanic eruption is some of the most rich earth in existence. The entire reason The Islands are so lush is *because* of the volcanoes that made them. We see the same with forest fires. There are literally tree species out there whose seeds cannot open and sprout without the heat of a forest fire to burn and crack the shell in release. There is no life without destruction; there is no destruction without the material life creates. It's cyclical. Te Fiti and TeKa being one and the same makes perfect sense.

The common sentiment is, "Why didn't the Ocean just do most of this itself? It clearly seems like it could have at least done a lot more to help her, if not just returned the Heart itself." I think the whole point was that because the heart was stolen by/for humans, the intention was that humans should have to be the ones to do it and prove that the world shouldn't be destroyed: that there's hope for humanity being good and worthy, or something along those lines. I think Tefiti herself had to see a human coming all that way and being selfless and compassionate before she was going to allow her heart to be given back to her like that. While it was clear that she _wanted_ it back, I suspect that as an angry monster, turned that way by her pain and hatred, she wouldn't have truly been able to absorb her heart back into herself: that because it's an obvious metaphor for her trauma, the only way she was ever going to be able to get it back was by seeing that people can be good, too, and allowing that hope and optimism to open hear heart again and reconnect with it. The damage could finally start to heal. Plus, as much as the Ocean likely wanted to help her, it was clear that they couldn't touch without it hurting her, and turning her to stone. If it had tried to place the heart back in her chest, her chest would have hardened and physically prevented the Heart from entering. It needed a human touch, and it needed to find a human who wouldn't shrink away from her or see her as a monster and try to defeat her, rather than help her heal.

I feel like I should add that this whole thing was started by humans wanting to have the power of the gods, so Moana using the power of the Ocean to cheat would have looked bad. I think the Ocean recognized that she really had to earn it on her own, or this was never gonna work, and Humanity was just gonna go right back to expecting the gods to help them with everything and do everything for them.

Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Auli'i Cravalho. Casting Notes Fact: Despite playing her grandmother, Rachel House is only 29 years older than Auli'i Carvahlo. Smoldering Intensity Fact: When Moana first meets Maui, he cocks his eyebrow in a strange way. This is called the "People's Eyebrow" move, Dwayne Johnson's signature move from his wrestling career. The Maori version is available in Australia and New Zealand, as well as on Disney Plus. Historical Facts: According to archaeological evidence, the exploration of Western Polynesia proceeded rapidly until about 900 BC, stopped suddenly for over 1,000 years, then resumed just as suddenly, with all of Eastern Polynesia colonized within a few centuries. Several plausible explanations exist, but the exact cause of the "Long Pause" remains a mystery. It represents the unfurling fern frond, symbolizing new life, new beginnings, personal growth, hope, a new start, perfection, rebirth, awakening, purity, the spirit of rejuvenation and peace. As a double spiral, it also symbolizes kinship and belonging.

Top theory is that moana and her ancestors are all decendents of te feti but only some have any of her power. Moanas grandmother had te feti's connection to nature and was seen as an outcast for it. She also transormed or ascended once she passed away into the creature she felt the closest connection with. Moana was choosen by the ocean at a very young age because of the power she recieved from te feti and the top theory is that when moana left her island, the ocean sent the storm and during that storm moana actually died and became a demi god. This would explain why she awoke on demi god island, had the strength to topple maoi's statue, survive the fall into the realm of monsters, have visions, fight a demon and connect with a god.

It was like they took all the best story elements and magic of what made musicals great and created a new masterpiece. I also really liked that there wasn't a romance in this movie and Moana's arc was of self discovery which made it really refreshing to me. Moana's "I want" song was also wonderfully imbedded with her insecurities rather that exclusively a desire.

I love Moana's development, but Maui's personal growth was amazing. From being such a vain, self-absorbed, borderline narcissistic demigod to becoming a kind-hearted and loving friend and mentor is awesome, plus hearing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson sing is pretty damn badass. I love how they cast Nicole Scherzinger (lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls) as Moana's mother.

I believe it should be noted that Te Ka wasn't surrounded by poison, but by volcanic rock, which, when ground down by the weather, is some of the most fertile ground in the world. So Te Fiti, when restored, is just showing the natural progression from forbidding lava fields to verdant islands. Great analysis and wonderful reactions!

one of my favorite soundtracks if not the favorite from a disney movie - all songs are great and the fact the whole cast has Polynesian/Maori roots so its lore accuarte is just fantastic. But what do you expect when Lin-Manuel Miranda is part of things? Exactly this- perfection!!

This is hands down my favorite disney movie. I’m more of a ghibli gal but Moana is amazing. It has the cultural appreciation and backstory so many disney movies lack and while it is a “princess movie”, the princess is the strong leader in her own right, her character does not revolve around the love pf a man. This movie focuses more on themes of family and love for others in general, not romantic love. I wish I had still been a little girl when I got to watch this.

So what I’m guessing you missed, considering a lot of people doing reaction seem to miss this, but right after she chose to save the turtle instead of going for the shell, there was an energy pulse that spread across the ocean. it wasn’t until after the rest of the ocean started showing its sentience. The reason it’s mentioned later that the ocean shows her is because she passed this first test, choosing to save the baby turtle over selfishly going for the shell.

The thing I love most about this movie is that the villain isn't some Evil Witch or anything. She's... a traumatised victim who had her heart stolen, lashing out at anyone who might hurt her again. And the solution wasn't to defeat her by fighting, but to show empathy and compassion, reminder her of who she is, and give her heart back. It's such a powerful message of healing through therapy and community, and such a departure from more common tropes where the villain is defeated by violence.

The ocean is alive, and it was calling to Moana, but also chastising her for trying to go out past the reef unprepared. It helps her where it can, but it can't do everything for her. It can't return the heart of Te Fiti, because it's Maui and humanity's burden to bear.

I want to point out something that may not be a popular opinion but IDC......Look how amazing this movie was ...Disney didn't try to take an existing movie and race swap the existing characters to check the diversity box...instead they actually put thought and heart into creating a new heroine of color, gave her a powerful back story and fleshed out her people.....and look how well this movie did at the box office. Maybe they should take the hint and stop with the diversity swaps and start actually putting some thought and some effort into fleshing out new movies exploring and celebrating different cultures.

I went down the comments section rabbit hole but I’m finally here to say what I meant to say too long ago: there’s a theory that Moana died when she was at the reef, which is how she was ok in the realm of monsters and how she could see Maui and Te Fiti and mainly her grandmother. I don’t think I believe it but just throwing the theory out there.

As someone who grew up on the ocean for the most part of my childhood (my father was a sea captain), so i definitely feel this "personal connection" whenever i see the ocean, too, like I'm seeing a past life of mine since most of those memories are faded. I'm a Native American, and I have to say-- that scene of Moana on the boat with her grandmother always hits me so deeply and made me wish so badly that Disney would give Native American stories another try to get away from the stigma of Pocahontas. The exchange between Moana and her grandmother hits so dang close to my own culture that it just bums me out so much that they haven't tried again.
