    I'll try to give some constructive feedback, here. While the content itself was all accurate and helpful, and you directly cut to what can be considered the meat of what makes Tanks fill their roles well, both in the game and without in an excellent finale that wrapped back around to the point, the theatrical side of things could use a lot more work. I'll start with what's easily verifiable; your spotlight effect for what is supposed to be the most crucial point of advice for the video was not very well done, even though all your other graphical editing was well executed (with the exception of a few glitches here and there, like in the middle of 21:48 and the left side of 22:33). I say graphical because the music was too quiet and I could notice some amount of spotty audio on my end, for both the gameplay footage and manually inserted sound effects. Mainly for Reinhardt, though that could have been me noticing it only after hearing the issues after I'd sampled enough of them. Some tearing that wasn't quite present in your mic, which had some as well, though that can be easily pinned on not having an especially expensive microphone. Speaking of voice, yours doesn't have the same qualities as, say, someone like EmpLemon. Someone who's able to carry on in this extremely dry tone without detracting from the content, but adding to it, the deadpanned descriptions to otherwise extremely climactic, sad, or terrible events almost being it's own form of satire. You have this same dry tone, and even some of the buildup towards the transitional segments where the character 'dies' that you capitalize on properly, but it's not present in any of the other parts of the video for the most part. You don't stand out as either chaotic or structured, and you don't make yourself out to be sarcastic nor dramatic. KZread is a place of extremes. You need to do something not even _you_ might think to do, though, that steers towards the opposite end of the spectrum from EmpLemon. That end being someone of similar sub-count despite spending less time on this site, by the name of Kaluka. He constantly has entirely unrelated, completely unhinged jokes in his essay videos, but it is extremely engaging because it is unexpected- brief enough to not lose sight of the topic, while leaving us wondering what the next trick will be. In your videos, by comparison, you drop subtlety too much; what could have been a sudden reveal was spoiled by the thumbnail. We _know_ you're going to mention the Heavy and Reinhardt by default, but not the Gunner. It could have been an excellent third and final entry leading into your next points, to say, "well, yes, but actually no" when asked if you needed to be durable to be a tank, before revealling that what makes a Tank a Tank isn't just attention, but pressure. Instead, you revealed them before that question could even appear in our heads. The thumbnail is your foot in the door to people's annually decreasing attention spans. You could have, instead, made Reinhardt and Heavy obvious focal points in the thumbnail, but with a third red and blurry silhouette that only regular Stout drinkers could make out, immediately drawing the question of who could fill this role- along the other two cult classic equivalents when it comes to tanks- could be.

    You should really check out the Heavy class from "The Finals." It has such an interesting and nuanced perspective of what it means to be a big, lumbering, unstoppable bastion of structure-busting and defense. Also, it would be nice to see why so many tanks have spin-up times for miniguns, huge damage but low accuracy, vulnerability to high-speed characters, or "backloaded" damage like Tahm Kench/Darius/Sion/etc

    I think there is kind of an interesting parallel to real life tanks here in regards to needing others for support, as intimidating as tanks can be. An interesting thing to remember is that tanks are shockingly vulnerable when you close the distance on them. Even in WW2 when tanks were the most prominent, there were stories of Finnish soldiers skiing down to tanks and throwing Molotovs to burn out its crew, in WW1 if a squad can engage in a tank in close quarters, they can actually methodically pry open the hatches or disable a tank with the right equipment. Simply put tanks can actually be pretty vulnerable when left unsupported, as intimidating as they might appear.

    @@DBArtsCreators Nah, Tanks make no sense at all in a PvP context. They're an idea lifted from PvE MMORPGs, where players can manipulate enemy AI to make them focus on one player, who then soaks all the damage while their team-mates kill off the enemies. But in a PvP context, players can't control what enemy players are going to focus on. And if all a Tank has going for them is a huge health-pool, then enemies will just ignore them and focus on their squishier allies. To actually be useful, Tanks either need high damage (to scare enemies away) or support utility (to boost their allies). But if we're following the Tank/Damage/Support trinity, then Tanks having damage or support abilities makes them tread on the toes of the other two roles. At which point, why play a Damage or Support class, when you can just play a Tank and do everything while also being vastly more survivable? Tanks in PvP are impossible to balance. They're either too strong, or they're useless.

    eh, id argue the tetras(or skirmishers in general) fit the bill more. sure, tanks typically don't have movement, but its the primary defense of the tetras. its more the philosophy though, as good tetra gameplay typically involves diving into the enemies backline, getting all the enemy eyes on you, and letting the actually good weapons kill the distracted enemies. Splatoon in general has an absurdly low ttk, so the big damage is sort of irrelevant, as it means even a slow killing weapon like the clash blaster can be a big problem if you just ignore them.

    As a tank enjoyer, this video is incredibly accurate. In fact, the mentions of some of the many problems and pitfalls that come with being a tank completely mirror the days I was first introduced to the class, all the way up to my present veterancy. You even sprinkled a little analysis of real life in here too. Other games, I believe, should get some of this spotlight as well. An analysis of whether or not they designed the class correctly would be a cool addition. Personally, a game that stuck out to me was a looter shooter, specifically the first Division in the Tom Clancy's series. It really had the pinnacle of tank builds: high health, damage, and defense. To put it simply, a competent tank build could bulldoze any content in the game, as long as it didn't require two players to time a button press---and that's including every single legendary mission which are notoriously difficult challenges that push a player to their very limits EVEN WITHIN A FULL TEAM. Of course, all of this is only possible because of the near invincible hunk of metal your character lugs around soaking up all the damage. Get flanked, or overextend, and it's game over.

    I think an amazing example of a tank is the Ogryn from Darktide who embraces all three, with having the most health and having ways to increase it, big damage being one of the best for crowd control and his grenades that can be single target or room clearing and brilliant defense with his shout/bull rush to pull agro way from his team and tank it with his slab shield or knock down the enemy to keep them from getting anywhere.

    The most brilliant aspect about his shout is the fact that it doesnt only pull agro, but force melee from otherwise ranged enemies too. I play a lot of Splatoon, and there is a weapon called the tenta brella (ironically enough the weapon that was shown for splatoon in the video is a backline) - and this is EXACTLY how it is played - a traditionaly tank would not work well due to the amount of mobility in the game, but the tent really is there to pull attention by threatening one-shots behind a moving shield. It's the only weapon in the game capable of holding it's ground in a 2v1 situation - and since the game is 4v4, the ability to give your teammates a 3v2 fight (keep in mind, that is a 50% manpower advantage) can be huge. or even just being able to pull the enemy's attention onto your shield can help so much for your teammates - in a game where the slowest time to kill is 1.25 seconds (considered laughably slow), yeah being able to attract enemy attention for 5-6 seconds absolutely counts.

    While Gunner is the closest thing to a tank in DRG, he is still more flexible than a hard tank like Reinhardt or Heavy (same goes for all of the other DRG classes). Everyone’s “job” is to progress the mission, they just all have something they are the best at. Everyone has a gun capable of killing bugs, a traversal tool to reach minerals, and a pickaxe they can use to mine through dirt. If there’s a wave of bugs and a vein of minerals high up and a Gunner and a Scout then yes, Gunner should probably focus the bugs while Scout gathers the minerals but if Scout’s off in another cave and there’s no bugs to kill, then Gunner should be zip-lining up to the minerals rather than waiting there with a thumb up his ass pinging the minerals for Scout to collect when he comes back. (same goes for the opposite scenario)

  • @bugjams

    @bugjams

    4 ай бұрын

    To add my own thoughts, too: My only gripe with his appraisal of the Gunner is that Gunner is NOT the highest-damaging Dwarf in the game. A skillful Driller or Engineer can quite easily out-DPS the Gunner. However, they'll burn through ammo much faster. Gunner's main power is his sustainability. All his primary guns have MASSIVE magazine sizes (with the Minigun being pseudo-limitless), so if you bring Born Ready on him, he can literally keep firing until his ammo is depleted with 0 breaks. He has the highest _consistent_ damage on the team, just not the highest max DPS (Burning Hell + Volatile Bullets can be pretty nuts tho, but imo that's an outlier and could use a slight nerf. Balance rambling aside...) In short, Gunner is like an anchor to the team - someone you can always count on to keep you covered while you reload and recover, and of course a beacon of safety when his shield is up. Actually, now that I think about it, Gunner is _technically_ a bit tankier than the other Dwarves, though only situationally - his armor damage resist type is Explosive, which is by _far_ the best armor out of all the Dwarves. Engie's Poison comes in close second. Many bug attacks deal explosive damage, even some attacks you wouldn't think would be considered explosions. So, despite having the same health as everyone else, even without a shield, Gunner is likely to be the last one standing in a fight (and also least likely to die to Fat Boy nukes or Driller's C4... a nice bonus :P).

    Fun fact, as someone who plays tf2 and a lot of heavy weapons guy, he ain't no tank, he only becomes a pseudo tank if he has a medic up his ass, and even then that can be shortly lives, but dude dies so fast he's a punching bag and he's so slow most people rather play anything else. Like yeah you might be able to tank a hit or two if it's not a crit Because he isn't meant to be played as a tank, he is meant to be played strategically to hold down a point WITH help of a team or to punish people too overconfindent, you won't last long staying in the same place however. If you think you are going to put yourself out there to defend your team you'll die as soon as the enemy sees you, everyone moves so fast you ahve to be at the right palce at the right time, You are more like a slow moving DPS, and since you are, once of the classes to dish the most damage you have to think where that damage is of most help it is what you can dish out that ultimately helps the team, no what you can take in, becasue you can take in very little and may god help you against spies, snipers and crit rockets. Thsi damage is what makes the heavy weapons guy special, it's his damage more so than his size and health that makes him an anchor to his team, and because he isn't a real tank he also depends a lot more on his team than his team depending on him to keep him alive and maintaining this damage wall against the enemy team. Heavy defines boundaries but he can't do so alone, at leas effectively, try playing heavy with a team that doesn't know what it's doing and it will surprise you how hard it is for the guy to push back, at most you might hold a space but it becomes increasingly harder to push back with other team mates fullfilling their roles properly. I had to but in, because very few people ACTUALLY bother to play him ourside of "everyone is playing everything else I wanted to I need to fill the spot out of obligation" and actually main the character, he ain't no tank, he just ain't and his massive health need actual managing for it to become an advantage, because trust me it goes faster than you can blink by too many things, heck even a fucking medic can punish a heavy with a well timed critical hit, dude's got it rough.

    Some of the most fun I've ever had in gaming was desparately trying to keep my buddy alive while he was playing Reinhart. He was an excellent Rein who knew how to make sure the entire enemy team was focused on him. When I got good at healing, he was practically unbreakable. In fact, he stopped even looking at his health when I was healer.

    Being a tank is difficult, due to both the enemies and teammates paying a lot more attention to you. Failure is much more noticed from you than the offensive role. Your failure to be a tank is felt as much as the support going down. It really sucks having that much pressure on you, and that many eyes on you. But for me? It's exactly what I want. Sure, losing as the tank really stings. But it's overcoming that stress and fear of failure is what makes me love playing the tank. While I mostly fall into the category of "More HP. More defense" so I can soak up as much damage as possible, it's also nice to try the more offensive part of tanks. Your teammates need someone to stick with, who is a glutton for punishment, so they don't have to take it. As the tank, you must carry the burden of protecting your teammates, and being a sort of safe zone for them, while having the enemies try their hardest to take you down so they can finish off your teammates. So as my Gunner would say "GET UP SOLDIER", because this fight ain't over yet. Get back out there and protect those who need protecting!

    One thing to keep in mind. Health for 'tanks' as a resource and cooldown just as much as any cooldowns they might have. For a DPS, health is just a means to not die. For a tank, its a resource to spend. In MMO's for example, you have your damage reduction abilities. If they're off cooldown, you constantly have to measure whether you need to use them now to make your healer have an easier time, or if you should wait and potentially stack them for a massive hit you know is coming soon. For non-tanks, HP is just an arbitrary number that sets how many mistakes you can make. For tanks its a resource you actively spend.

    It's a little of both categories, and that aggression DOES indirectly become protection for your team, but you are right. Applying pressure is key for higher level of play. I loved the Reinhardt kit because you couldn't perform a defensive role while dealing damage, you had to choose one, and let the threat of the other force the enemies to make suboptimal plays. My favorite tactic in the mirror matchup was to walk up to an opposing enemy Rein, drop shield and swing my hammer once or twice. It usually caused them to try to swing back, dropping their own shield, back up, or to rip an Ultimate, which I can block on reaction.

    I would like to talk about one more example of a tank in a videogame I played (Terraria) In Terraria, what many people in the community call a tank build is a set of gear in a loadout that optimizes for survivability and attracting enemy aggro, as opposed to damage output. As a tank, if the enemies (especially bosses) are attacking you, know that this means they aren't attacking your squishier teammates. Terraria’s tank builds don't actually have any more hit points than any other class (ideally, everyone would have as many hit points as they can), but they often have a combination of Defense, Damage reduction, and Life regeneration so they take less damage from any given hit and can heal more quickly. Unlike Heavy, Gunner, and Reinhardt, the Terrarian Tank is actually greatly encouraged to avoid taking hits in the first place, as that's the best way to minimize the damage you take (Sure you can theoretically beat the entire game without taking any damage at all, but the existence of human error means you can't rely solely on "git gud" unless you're a God of Terraria, so tank gear makes this more forgiving) The longer it's been since you last took damage, the faster your life regen. Therefore, even as a Tank, you should at least try to avoid taking damage (though as a Tank, you still want to stay near enemies to draw Aggro). Interestingly enough, a good way to practice playing as a Tank in Terraria is playing by yourself (you don't even need tank gear for this practice), as the way Aggro works is that enemies go after the nearest player, treating players with high Aggro as being nearer than they really are. When playing by yourself, you are the only player, so every enemy solely focuses on you. In a sense, you become the tank; the center of attention. Playing by yourself helps you get used to constantly drawing aggro; constantly having the enemies attack you and only you. And just like all the tanks discussed in the video, you can easily die by taking too many hits. Not even all the Defense, Damage reduction, Life regen, Lucky dodges, and Healing Potions in the world can save you from your own recklessness.

    With the way you described tank characters, A Melee tank from terraria actually kinda fits your descriptions, at least in end game. First, The melee class in terraria inherently has the most defense over any other in each stage of the game. The tank has the most survivability over everyone despite (roughly) having the same amount of health as everyone else. This hits point one. Melee tanks are also pretty spicy, although melee tanks specialize in high defense and damage reduction. A melee tank is fully capable of melting just about any boss. The most satisfying thing to do as a Melee tank is to stand completely still during a boss fight and hold down attack meanwhile the boss is just constantly wailing and hammering damage upon you that you just ignore because the boss's health is going down faster than yours. This hits point two. And finally, Melee tanks in terraria are inherently the primary target of any mob in the game. If the mob is on the player's screen, the mob automatically targets that player over any other. This is of course the class's double-edged sword. The mobs concentrating on you means your teammates *could* help you since their attention isn't on defending themselves but that's if your teammates are willing to help you, not only that, high defense can only do so much when you're being bombarded from every single angle by every single thing, this is why melee tanks tend to be the very first person to die during a boss or an event. This hits point three. So yeah, Melee tanks from terraria pretty much check every box. Idk why I wanted to type this but, hey, I did.

    I am convinced the only reason people think driller is a tank is because he's similar to the heavy. Save for the shield bubble, the driller is a direct improvement in every way, more damage output, isn't slowed down as much while shooting, drills are more useful than the slow Zipline, and the C4 is great for team killing.

  • @anonim-8572

    @anonim-8572

    1. Driller has considerably shorter primary weapon range and worse direct damage output (although can be used on the move more easily and afflict enemies with status effects) 2. Driller's secondaries generally aren't as destructive as gunner's 3. While drills are stronger mobility tool, they can't handle open space like zipline does 4. Shield is very important in this equation since it gives gunner considerably better ability to stand his ground; satchel charge is more situational and forces you to get out of the blast range Driller is a better combatant for fighting aggressively, on the move, and clearing masses of fodder and weakening large targets Gunner is a better combatant for standing his (and allies') ground and dishing out direct damage towards everything that moves Driller is a WW2 tank Gunner is a WW1 tank

    My primary Gunner build in DRG is Burning Hell Minigun with Hot Bullets in T5, a Volatile Bullets Bulldog, and Cluster Grenades. It is extremely powerful thanks to the Minigun's ability to ignite enemies at any range by firing at them long enough, and ignite groups of enemies in a cone before the gun at a close range, combined with the VB giving the Bulldog +300% damage against burning enemies, and the ability of Cluster Grenades to stun large groups, but it's even more like walking a tightrope because I have to keep myself close to the swarm to maximize the build's effectiveness while avoiding actually being hit and avoiding overheating the gun. It's literally and figuratively playing with fire.

I tend to find heavy gets his true potential out if you use the dalokahs bar/fish cake, the 50 health may not sound like a lot but it let's you tank so much, it let's heavy tank 2 quick scopes from sniper, and makes him more sturdy to explosives. Overall I see the issue with people calling him boring as you really need the mindset to enjoy playing him, if you have that mindset he becomes the funnest class in game.

    The thing is... There's no such thing as a tank. I'm being partially facetious here but tanks are put into subcategories based on how they are interested to be played as "being frontline" is actually really abstract. The four major categories I know of are: anchors, pushers, divers, and supports. Figuring out which one you fit in is crucial to self-improvement as you may think you're doing things right but you're actually holding yourself back.

    Side note about drg is that with the exception of scout id argue every class can tank: - engi with an electricity stubby, Stun spinning death, twin turrets, and mines or hologram nades, and even his platforms with or without bug repellent. - driller with sticky flames or a sludge cannon, and mostly free choice of other gear, ideally adding more single target damage, providing pretty good cc and damage to everyone. - Scout idk enough to say I'll be honest. Tbh the thing I find interesting is how the most "tank" class in the gunner is the least geared towards managing swarm behavior, all at the cost of damage, but with that in mind it keeps him the heart of the team, gunner can move where he's needed, engi can't do this easily, driller has good status application and dot, but still lacks compared to what gunner can do, scout can get where he has to be and remove priority targets and objectives but struggles in the crowd control gunner gives. His simplicity compliments literally everyone.

    In most games I play, be it MMOs, MOBA or hero shooter, I often gravitate towards the tank archetype of characters, as i usually like to play as the usual "big guy" and i really like that feeling of being THE TROUBLE that the enemy has to get through first, being that wall as you say. But i can confirm that being the tank can get quite tough. In PvE games it's not that bad, and you still get that feeling of being the team's cornerstone, but tanking in a PvP game is really stressful, being a Ram/Hog main in Overwatch has some great highs but some deep lows, and yeah, some people sure like to point fingers at you even if you're doing things right.

    I have seen lifesteal used rather effectively for some tanks. It means that as long as they stay on the frontlines where they are supposed to be, they are much harder to kill. It also means that it is much more dangerous to enter their range, as you risk healing the tank if you don't do enough damage. This can result in enemies running away from you off the objective so that they can pick you off from a safe distance. But in doing so you have achieved your goal as a tank.

    @@knyt0 It depends on how it is done. It is bad when it is just "oh yeah this character just heals more than you can damage them, killing them is just really annoying". It's better when it is "this character has to fight in order to get health, therefore they have to constantly be fulfilling their role as a tank in order to not get effortlessly picked off" Generally tanks with lifesteal should only have it from certain things though, making it so that every time you get hurt heals them is when it gets to being a problem.

    the main three roles in most multiplayer games are tank, healer, and DPS (aka Damage Per Second), so i wouldnt say damage is such a foundational part of the role, especially in team based pvp games, nor would i say it's the first thing anyone thinks of when someone says "this character is a tank".

    Just like how an irl tank, not being supported by infantry can just be picked off by a schmuck with a rocket launcher

    Every game I play I lean to the tank. I’m among the dozens of proud Heavy Mains who give our sandviches freely to the medic friends. I’m a DRG Gunner graybeard who will babysit Doretta when no one else will. And when I still played Overwatch, I was the best damn Orisa in bronze where I belonged. This whole video explains why I play Tank. Not to stay alive, not to teamwipe, but to die babysitting and die on the objective. And I’m proud.

    if i had to describe the tank role in videogames with one word, it would have to be pressure,heavy pressures enemys with his absurd dps when he is fully revd, gunner put pressure on the bugs by shredding the tankier enemys like oppresors, and rein puts pressure by forcing the enemy to back away from him or try to make him explode in an instant as if he is ignored he gets to swing on the team.

    I can totally see where the scout drg could be put in a video talking about high mobility classes in video games as either pick classes or recon classes, but where would driller fit in? a video about war criminals in video games
