    For those still wondering why 0:31 is an unbelievable play, here's why. 1. It's Bartolo Colon. 2. He's a pitcher. 3. It's his first career home run. 4. He went 19 years in the majors without hitting a home run.

  • @whitedeion598

    @whitedeion598

    6 жыл бұрын

    I'd call it the most overrated. Why in the world is he running looking backwards (which cuts down speed greatly) for the ball and then diving forward? If he runs a better route it is a routine catch that no one remembers. I've seen many centerfielders make that catch without ever getting on a highlight reel. Edmonds was the epitome of a hotdog in the field. Andruw Jones made tough catches look easy. Edmonds made routine catches look spectacular.

  • @anticipation2796

    I’m sure you could make that catch

  • @alb639

    @alb639

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@whitedeion598 I'll respect your opinion, but I totally disagree. Maybe other CFs have made that catch. I, personally, have never seen another and would love to check one out if you know of a link or even just the CFs name. I don't follow the NL nearly as close as I follow AL baseball, so I may have missed one or two of the catches you mention. The reason he turns his head is to keep track of that ball. There is no other way to field it. Maybe a quicker OF would have gotten to it without needing to dive, but that doesn't take away from the excellence of Edmond's catch, in my opinion. If Edmonds didn't turn to watch the ball he most likely would have lost the ball completely. I'm not quite sure how he could have run a better route to the ball. The quickest path between two points is a straight line when on a flat plane.

  • @whitedeion598

    @whitedeion598

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@anticipation2796 I've made a catch better than that, but it was more luck than anything. I didn't drift off to the side and have to slow down with my head tilted back. I turned around and sprinted to a spot. The ball came over my shoulder and I made the diving catch with my back to the infield. I'll never forget the batter slamming his helmet down and screaming "f ing deion" after seeing that I secured the catch through a somersault. Thanks for letting me relive my best defensive play ever. It was fun lol

  • @whitedeion598

    @whitedeion598

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@alb639 we have a very definition of a straight route. He was drifting right initially and got slightly turned around, which caused the ball to go over his head instead of his shoulder. andruw jones made that play routinely. He was always squared up running after balls. He turned his back on balls all the time and managed to keep them over his shoulders. That's why all the defensive metrics had him as a much better defender than edmonds. He wasn't much faster. His instincts and route running were much better

    Nats had a rare triple play against San Francisco in 2017. The year before that, Steven Souza Jr. made a great catch for the last out preserving a no hitter for Jordan Zimmerman in the last game of the season. Oakland has one of the smallest budgets in the league, they have to let pretty much 99% of their good players walk or trade them once they lose arbitration control over them. While New York can pay 10 people 30 million a year, Oakland can't even do 20 million for one player. That is like 33% of their budget.

    Griffey is an all time great, but I don't think he has a case against Willie Mays. It's between him, Tris Speaker, Dimaggio, and Mantle for the #2 spot behind Mays.

  • @polite_as_fuck

    @polite_as_fuck

    6 жыл бұрын

    Alec J. K I agree with you that Mays was the best center fielder to play the game, but I think I'd give #2 to Junior. Obviously I'm biased, being from Seattle, but if you go purely by the numbers, he has Mantle and DiMaggio beat, minus batting average. I will say that Mantle and DiMaggio do have the WS wins, though; something that eluded Junior. Makes for a good debate. Speaker is an interesting case, but I consider anyone who played before integration as not having faced the best possible competition. DiMaggio sort of falls in that category as well, but to his credit he did serve in WWII, so that took away from his numbers. I still give the nod to Junior, though. The pitchers threw a lot harder and had a lost nastier stuff in the steroid era.

    Actually, Mantle's best years were quite a bit better than Mays's, although Mays had a longer career. The most important stat is OBP....Mick leads Willie .420 to .383...that's the big difference. Cobb was better than Speaker offensively, but Tris was a better fielder. He created force plays and double plays from CF by trapping or fake trapping balls, because he played so shallow. Mays, Mantle, Cobb, and Speaker are the best 4 all-around players according to people who study their impact on their times. Griff and Joe were not quite as good, although both were great fielders. Ken Jr was not as fast as other CFs, but he certainly used his speed very well.
