I'm still playing, and this is my 20th year playing. The only time I snapped a bat, I was 145 lbs. I'm 5' 11". To be fair, I had a little bit of help from the ground first, but it didn't even break it halfway. My legs have always been strong, but my arms? Not even close. I guarantee that if you have stick legs, you're not breaking a bat, no matter how much you strengthen your arms

My guesses are that either he wanted to get his team going and a single wouldn't cut it since he's a slow baserunner, or that he was trying to get out of a slump and he still didn't feel comfortable with his hit. It's never a good feeling when you can't get your timing right

I have an old maple Louisville slugger from high school that I used to hit golf balls, softballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, basketballs, lacrosse balls, rocks, 2x4s, tires, fence posts, and even the occasional baseball on a good day at the plate. To think these guys break tight grain, high quality lumber like that over there knees is unimaginable. It makes these heavy duty boom sticks look like dry rot balsa wood. How on earth?
