    I understand Kershaw’s pain at 4:08. The last softball game I played of my season this year, I pitched an absolute sitting duck of a strike to a batter and my umpire called it a ball. He was going to call time on the game anyway because it was too wet and home plate became a danger zone, but my sister and I didn’t know that at the time. He said that he wanted the younger player I was pitching against to get walked so she could run down to first. I was so mad that both my sister (as the catcher) and I walked towards the umpire saying “what?!” And that’s when he called time and game.

    Brett was vindicated, the game picked back up at that point, with Brett's HR counted, but Brett was ejected, so was the manager, for protesting...protesting the very call that was overturned. A Royals pitcher was also disciplined for trying to hide the bat. The Yankees had noticed the tar earlier but said nothing until the game was on the line. Another issue was they measured the tar by using home plate, but home plate is 17 inches across, while the rule allowed tar up to 18 inches. The kicker is the rule exists only to keep a ball in play from being discolored by touching pine tar, not because a ball will go further if the stuff is used.

    Many players and coaches (and certainly many of the fans) don't just calmly say "that was a bad call", they insult the umpire, yell, get mad and aggressive, stomp around, throw things. Let's look at the rules, too, just to be clear. 9.01 (d): " Each umpire has authority to disqualify any player, coach, manager or substitute for objecting to decisions or for unsportsmanlike conduct or language..." and 9.02 (a): "Any umpire’s decision which involves judgment, such as, but not limited to, whether a batted ball is fair or foul, whether a pitch is a strike or a ball, or whether a runner is safe or out, is final. No player, manager, coach or substitute shall object to any such judgment decisions." What we also don't often see is the constant little comments and insults made towards the umpires. People only have so much patience. I was a soccer referee for several years and I now completely get why officials act like this. If Korean little leaguers can have excellent attitudes and good sportsmanship all the time, there's no reason MLBers making millions can't also.

  • @Xenoviel

    @Xenoviel

    @D C If the rules say we're supposed to treat the umpires as above reproach then the umpires have to make sure that their conduct and their calls are above reproach. That is true regardless of who is questioning them or how loudly they might be doing so. If the home plate umpire has a big strike zone such that pitches a few inches off the plate are strikes and they call them that way consistently the entire game, someone who starts a fight over it is more clearly in the wrong. If an umpire's strike zone moves around, they shouldn't be back there and the people who call them on being inconsistent should not be punished for it. That's just sensible, and if the rules contravene good sense, damn the rules.

    @gritnix

    @@trooperdgb9722 No one says umpires are perfect, but an interesting study out of Boston University showed that umpires, just like the athletes, have a prime. During their younger years they get more calls correct, by quite a margin actually, almost certainly because their eyes are younger and their brains are faster. Athletes don't get to keep playing into their 50s just "because". They have to prove they've got what it takes during tryouts. Why not do something like that with umpires? Have a closed proving ground exercise with electronic/robotic systems that know the call. Have the umpire under examination make his call and enforce a minimum correct score in order to remain an MLB umpire.
