www.haldexrepairs.co.uk
THE HALDEX REPAIRS PROMO CODE HAS NOW EXPIRED BUT THE PARTS ARE STILL COMPETITIVELY PRICED
Please note it's always difficult filming workshop items on your own so I've started to use a head mounted camera. This doesn't always pick up what it needs to because often (not always) it's actually impossible to see the item being worked on with your eye. Plus the exhaust system runs very close to the diff and coupling which again doesn't help. Apologies about the areas where this applies, hopefully they don't detract too much from the overall guide.
In this video I add Haldex all wheel drive system failure to the list of things to look out for when
buying a Mk7 Golf R (and many other AWD models) and show you to fix it properly and cheaply. It is disappointing that VW Group allowed a known issue with their previous generation cars to continue in these newer ones but there is a simple reason, the 30k/3 year Haldex oil change interval, while shorter than on the older PQ35 platform cars which was 40k miles with no time limit (yep, they went wrong too!), is still too long. Don't forget on the Haldex system used on a Mk1 TT/Mk4 Golf the oil change was every 20k miles. This extended interval is possibly to avoid the work having to be covered by VWG funded service plans or by leasing companies who tend to want the first 3 years to be low maintenance, why do you think the first brake fluid change is after 3 years yet the subsequent ones are every 2 years? It's the same fluid! Any issues tend to occur outside the 3 year warranty period which may means its no coincidence that VW will no longer sell you an extended 4 or 5 year warranty when the car is new.
MK7 GOLF R OWNERS PLEASE READ THIS:
The bevel box at the front of the propshaft is designed to fail if it's subject to excessive loads i.e. from remapped engines so this may be the cause of failure on modified cars. This video explains how to diagnose this:
• 2016 Golf R Bevel Box ...
This is a list of the cars affected (anything earlier will probably be Gen 4 and suffer similar issues as per our previous video)
Audi A1 2015 onwards
Audi A3 S3 RS3 / Sportback 2013 onwards
Audi A3 Cabriolet 2014 onwards
Audi Q3 2012 onwards
Audi TT / TTS / TTRS Coupe/Roadster 2014 onwards

Volkswagen Tiguan 2013 onwards
Seat Alhambra 2012 onwards
Seat Leon / Leon 4 2013 onwards
Seat Altea Freetrack 2014 onwards
Skoda Octavia / Scout 2013 onwards
GTI PERFORMANCE/CLUBSPORT/TCR OWNERS READ THIS:
Your cars have a similar Haldex system but on the front axle known as the 'VAQ front differential'. It's not particularly well known that this too needs an oil change and being based on Haldex Gen 5 it also suffers from the issues shown in this video. We will cover this in a future video.

I'm surprised the Haldex system is so prone to sludge after a very short time. Something is badly designed in there to cause that. And a worn commutator on a simple electric motor after such a short time also smacks of spare part repeat sales design. I never new that Haldex was in the same category as Lucas electrics.........

Interesting video - I'm guessing that changing the pump isn't part of the VW service schedule? My R only has about 1700 miles on the clock, but if I keep it after the PCP term ends & I do that mileage, I'll definitely change the pump, along with the oil. Is it also a time thing too? I've a funny feeling that VW schedule the Haldex oil change for 4 years OR 40,000 miles (whichever is first)? Worth doing on a 4 yr old R with less than 40k on the clock? Great information, really useful to know that

I took my Cupra to JCT600 Seat to get the Halden fluid changed. Afew weeks later this fault code came up differential lock and it would not go away. So it went back to a different JCT600 Seat and they found it to be a broke axle lock. Seat themselves even said that this part should not fail and had to order it from Spain because no where in UK had it in stock. The car was out of warranty but I argued good will gesture and after 5 weeks they accepted and fixed my car. Do you think this might of been caused by the Seat technician changing the wrong fluid in the Halden system?

Been having Haldex traction issues on my STock 2016 A3, dealer first replaced the Haldex pump, said it “works fine” after the pump replacement, it barely improved when I drove it, still lots of wheel spin and traction control light flashes constantly from dig, starting to think maybe they did not re learn the pump when installing however it was a procedure for a TSB so you would think they know to do that hey? Now back to the dealer and they found another code C111307 awd malfunction, and they said the clutch needs to be replaced since it is slipping when they lifted the car and tested the wheels spinning. They ordered a clutch which they said was near $4000 CAD, All covered under warranty fortunately, but my warranty ends in 1 week lol. So I sure damn hope that fixes it. They said my rear diff is fine, and I don’t believe I have symptoms of a failing rear diff, What would you recommend me to look for if the clutch doesn’t fix it? Great video as well.

Hi Tenzin, The fact the dealer said it "works fine" yet it clearly didn't doesn't give me much faith in them. That C111307 is specifically listed on the Gen 5 page on the haldexrepairs.co.uk website as being caused by "typically blocked pump, clean out and relearn or defective transfer box" So it doesn't look like what they are going to do will fix it. Do you know anyone with VCDS? www.haldexrepairs.co.uk/generation-5-haldex-fault-finding-repair-guide/

@volkswizard Thanks for replying! Yeah, it was two different dealerships that I had went to, yeah it is puzzling why they would give me a new clutch that is 4 grand, when they can possibly solve the issue for much cheaper. Guess they have no clue about the haldex system. We will have to see if the new clutch will fix the issue, but now I am having doubts. I do have access to a VCDS scanner at multiple audi specialist shops. What should I look for when scanning?

@@volkswizard Hey volkswizard, so the car seems to be all fixed up now, with no traction control issues what so ever during acceleration! :) AD replaced the clutch, and tested the control module, module seemed to be Ok. CPO warranty ends in 4 days so I was very lucky. I believe the clutch failed due to the clogged pump not functioning properly for an extended period of time, causing no clamping force on the clutch when needed and lack of fluid, resulting in a slipping clutch which becomes fried eventually. Issue could have been resolved if I had fixed the clogged pump early enough I believe, but I did not experience TC issues until winter time, as I do not drive the car hard during summer. This is what AD stated at least.

The haldex control unit was replaced under warranty as there are several communication faults present, but this didn’t fix the problem. Myself and the master tech suspect wiring from the haldex control unit to the rest of the car is damaged thus creating a lack of values which the haldex needs to know how to operate. I can't see an issue with that Steve, it's not like the oil is lubricating bearings. The only thing to consider is that the pump pre-charges so it's constantly working just in case it's called upon to engage the back wheels (that why it's so much more responsive than the original Haldex)

I bet it was actually a simple fix, it's common for main dealers to do this work but not do the pump learn function and then quote big bucks to fix it unnecessarily, madness.

Gen5 pumps constantly burn out because the filter was done away with. Much easier and cheaper to change a filter than the pump.

Do u offer this Haldex service to the public from your garage ?? I would like to get my A3 Quattro ( 2017) checked out by you. I have recently had end of warranty check from Birmingham Audi and they mentioned nothing about this Haldex service or check

Main dealer won't go looking for this problem, quite often they sell cars with this problem! I'm afraid Neeraj I don't offer this service but a good specialist like www.autops.co.uk is worth the drive. Just make sure your car doesn't spin up with ESC off and get the Haldex oil change every 2 years or 20k miles, whichever comes soonest.

The issue here is oil change intervals, VWG had 20k intervals on Mk1 TT, as soon as this was pushed to 40k for PQ35 chassis cars there were problems. 30k/3 years for MQB is better but not often enough, it was clearly chosen to suit lease, PCP market and mean that the service plans don't have to cover Haldex oil change! 20k/2 years is where it needs to be.

Advert for what? A company that allows you to save £100s of pounds by not going to a main dealerships to get the very common fault that means you need your Haldex coupling repaired? It’s not an advert but is that really that bad if it is? Is it better that people will and pay a lot of cash they can’t afford to the company who produced the hardware that fails prematurely and reward them for making it so rubbish? There’s a lot of rubbish on social media that is worth criticising, this is not it
