MK5/MK6 Front Wheel Hub Replacement | ECS DIY
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Front wheel hubs on both MK5 and MK6 VW's commonly fail between 100K to 130K miles. The replacement of the wheel hub seems daunting at first, but with the proper tools and guide, this job is a lot easier than it seems. Estimated time for this is between 1 and 2 hours per side.

Never do your degree torque with a click type torque wrench

Agreed! Ouch on that torque wrench!
ECS has great DIY videos. Comprehensive, easy to understand and a simple follow along. I often have my ipad beside me as I’m working to refer to in case of issue.

Definitely a good opportunity to do other maintenance while in there
Do you have to torque them? Or can you just tighten it as much as you can without a torque wrench
I had a shop try to con me into an axle + CV swap by saying "the axle just fell out" when I had them replace the left front wheel hub. Seems normal to me as seen here. My girl would let go of the axle squatted in his lift bay a few days as payback. Ended up with a new CV boot instead.
Here is Cali its less likely to have that type of corrosion But what about putting a little anti seize on the new hub?

Always a good idea for next time.
Would have be handy to see how axle nut was tightened at the 180 degree. If possible
Would a slide hammer work to remove instead of air hammer?

There is an easier way. There are videos on KZread how to remove stuck bearings or rotors, same method, different press point. Use a couple bolts and nuts, easy peasy.
Do you need to do an alignment after?

You have to replace the 3 nuts under the arm exactly in the same place. You can take a picture or mark with a marker. these 3 nuts affect the camber so its recommended to do an alignement
Do you have to replace the ball joint nuts?

They are single use nuts according to factory manual.
Try this in Massachusetts on a NC Golf... 🤪🤣

Always use anti seize!!
"Thats what she said"😁
Pretty sure the torque on the lower ball joint nuts is 60 Nm, not 100. I set it to 100 based on this video and could feel one stripping. 2 other sources said it should be 60

It depends. If that lower control arm is cast steel it gets 60 Nm, if it is sheet steel or cast aluminum it gets 100 Nm. This is per the VW shop manuals. It's confusing, but I guess they like to keep us on our toes lol.

No need to mess with ball joints or control arms on an mk5. Plenty of room to remove the (4) 12mm triple square bolts by simply turning the stearing wheel. And buy a slide hamer for $7 at a garage sale to pull that hub. Lol
No good Mechanic !! I don t like'it
