MK3 Toyota SUPRA The forgotten Legend
Overshadowed by its iconic predecessors and successors, the MK3 Supra often goes unnoticed in discussions of legendary sports cars. Yet, beneath its understated presence lies a tale of untapped potential and hidden charm. Produced from 1986 to 1992, the MK3 Supra was a departure from the bold and aggressive styling of its predecessors, adopting a more understated and aerodynamic design language. Despite its sleek lines and promising performance, the MK3 Supra failed to garner the recognition it truly deserved. However, those who truly appreciate its virtues discover a car that offers a balance of comfort, refinement, and exhilarating performance. With its turbocharged engines, advanced suspension, and impressive handling capabilities, the forgotten MK3 Supra offers a unique driving experience that is often overlooked. It's time to rediscover the hidden allure of the MK3 Supra, and appreciate the legacy it has left within the realm of forgotten sports cars.

This was my first car when I was 18 yo! I only got 2500USD, 86 MK3 Supra was the only rear wheel drive Japanese car that was available on autotrader at the time in Los Angeles back in 2006. As someone that is originally from Japan I was only looking to buy Japanese rear wheel drive car. I lowered, installed nicer intake/exhaust system... racing with other cars on 10FW then blowed the headgasket :(... Poor international student couldn't afford engine rebuild so that was sold to a gentle man who works at Toyota dealer ship for 20 years, and he said "Im gone restore it, and this gone be my son's first car". Good memories!

My best friend bought a 1987 A70 when we were 16 years old. It was his first car. We had some amazing memories just cruising in this pearl white beauty with the burgundy interior. We even managed to stuff a full sized surf board inside for our senior beach week when we graduated high school. Over 20 years later he still owns this car as well as a 1986.5 with a 1jz swap. His car is so clean it was even featured in the North American promo commercial for the mark 5 a couple years ago since he’s kept it meticulously stock and clean. As a result of his continued passion for these cars and this era of Japanese classics he now owns his own custom car shop specializing in mkiii and mkiv Supra builds. So many many good times and a lifetime of friendship built cruising in and wrenching on this car. 👏🏼🔥🏎️

Quite frankly, it was a scarey ride, not becuz it was outta control, but becuz it could take ur breath away when you got on it...

This was my very first car! I had a dark red 1987 one. It was a gift from my uncle when I was 16. The head gasket failed and the car would dump white smoke everywhere. My popz took it to a shop to get fixed, and the shop never really worked on it. They wanted 3 grand for a new engine! They kept storing the car in different places, including the parking lot of a public library. The police came to our house asking about that. Eventually the shop moved away (more like disappeared), and they took my car with them. My dad reported it as stolen, but we never saw it again. I had a friend who wanted to turn it into a full-blown race car. I wish we had sold it to him instead. Actually I wish I still had it for myself. Never had a car as good as this one. I love the 4th-gen Supra (I wanted to get one after I lost the 3rd-gen but my parents were like HELLS NAW), but it does sadden me that no one ever talks about the 3rd-gen Supra. Such a wonderful fucking car.

I bought an '88 Turbo, 5spd in '90 and it was my daily driver for 10 years until I lost the head gasket with about 150k miles on it. Still on the original clutch too. Loved that car... The cloth front seats were the most comfortable seats I have ever experienced and the cloth didn't fall apart like the leather ones do... Loved the interior and exterior look of that car and how smooth the engine ran... Until it had about 125k miles on it. You couldn't tell the engine was running unless you looked at the tachometer!

I had a 1987 Supra Turbo with Eibach lowering springs and Tokico struts that worked with the factory suspension computer, plus a modified intake, an HRS steel head gasket, boost control/ignition + fuel mods and a 3" exhaust making 350 RWHP. Loved that car. I owned it for 13 years. The rear subframe was a problem on high boost cars with the bridge over the differential tearing in half from too much torque.

I owned one of these magnificent rides (1988 Supra Turbo with the 3.0 liter 7M-GTE engine) and the engine is bulletproof when you add an intercooler and beefier radiator (Had a GReddy Intercooler kit). The real reason this Supra didn't get the respect it deserve was because it was heavier than it's predecessor, and at the time no 4 wheel steering nor AWD which would have made this car a true Dragonslayer. Also, it was marketed as a GT (Gran Turismo/Grand Touring) and not a true all out sports car. Despite having a world class suspension and powerful and capable engine. This car was built for high speed, long distance, comfortable cruising. Nothing inherently wrong with that as many GT machines from Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and others give you the best of both worlds (speed and comfort). But back in the 80s it was comfort or speed. Rarely both. Even Porsches were real butt busters as well. That and "turbo lag" of the time limited how fast you got that mill to give you it's power. So to summarize, the MK3 Supra was WAY ahead of its time and a tantalizing look into what cars would become. And if you want one? They are well worth the effort!! But a diet is in order, especially the 80s MK3. Lighter hatch glass, carbon Targa roof, a good aero kit and a host of engine mods (cold air intake, intercooler, stronger twin turbos, better exhaust) and you have an awesome alternative to the extremely pricey 240/260/280/300/350z series, or the later RX-7s.

The 3rd gen Toyota Supra A70 is the one that sold the most among the other generations ! Success of a car is it's sale numbers.. It's not forgotten and it's legacy is on the highest level at the moment. The 1st model to get turbo and twin turbo engines. Sport roofs (targa top), Big 8" inch diff, most robust 5speed transmission (R154) , Torsen differential technology, JZ motor options (unfortunately Japan market only), 1st JDM car ever with ABS lock brakes, Electronic damper suspension, heated seats, automatic digital control, amazing interior, very comfortable, and quality at it's best! Used in Rallye Group A, drifting, drag competition, on-line game platforms, is the first true GT car ever made. In Japan they call it the Japanese Muscle car! The Supra mk3 turbo A edition model, was the most powerful car in 1988 in Japan with 270hp. JZ swap it, put some coil overs, some BBK, and some nice wheels and you got the best Supra ever built ❤

Honestly, if you look into this generation of Supra you'll understand why it's so overshadowed. The 7M-GTE engine had a lot of little teething problems which made it a lot more of a hassle to maintain and push out more power than the 2jz engine, I've been trying to scoop one up but as I'm reading more and more on forums you'll find out that even in its stock form it's a car for people that want to spend time working on their car regularly. Unlike the 4th gen which if you keep it relatively stock, is going to be a lot more reliable and dependable. Despite that I hope to own one sooner or later if I bump into the right and yes, they're underrated...but, I'm also not suprised they're not as appreciated as the later generation. It's not all hurr durr fast & furious, there's legit reasons why the 4th gen is just a better car overall

About 30 years ago I had a black 88 Supra with tan leather interior, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED that car. To my eyes it looked amazing inside and out. For the time period the interior was like a space ship, and even some people commented just that when I had them as passengers, especially at night. The car was so smooth. The ride quality was just fantastic. Just a perfect balance of ride quality and handling as a GT-cruiser type vehicle. It also was quite ballsy for the time period. I remember it having a good amount of torque. It was the perfect car for me at the time. Fantastic looks, smooth, comfortable, luxurious, relatively fast, and very reliable. Unfortunately I wound up wrecking it being young and dumb, after having too many drunks. I've had MANY vehicles since then, but that still remains one of my favorite most enjoyed vehicles, possibly at the top of the list. And for the record, I still think they look fantastic to this day. I've debated getting another one for nostalgia's sake.

Buying an 88' MK3 in 2021 was the best purchase I've ever made. The car looks like nothing else on the road and it gets a massive amount of attention. Purely stock, it's a pretty dated car with huge amounts of bodyroll and ride height. Lowering her on FA 500 coilovers, beefy front swaybar and rear strutbrace, she is now the best handling car I've ever driven. The driving experience is as raw and fun as it gets. Far and away the best car interior I've ever seen and also has the most comfortable seats I've ever used. I think people only actually woke up to this car the last three years as the prices have spiked and even since I bought it, parts prices have doubled. By the end of the decade I think it will be considered an actual classic.

Loved that car, most comfortable drivers seat I have ever been in (and I been in plenty of Bentley's, Rolls Royce's, newer Lexus's, Mercedes, even a Maybach... None of them had a driver's seat that fit me so well and was so comfortable. Granted I am a small guy, but.... Drove it for 10 years without much trouble until finally loosing the head gasket at around 150k miles and overheating it. Was still on the original clutch! Maybe 3rd or 4th set of brake pads! Until it had about 125k miles on it, you couldn't tell if the engine was idling or not inside the car unless you looked at the tach. Many times I thought it stalled at a red light and almost panicked until looking at the tach!

The Mark 3 is a great car. I remember seeing one of these in the lot in 1992, just as Toyota was about to shift to the Mark 4. It has that look like the curves of the 90s are waiting to be born. It's flat, wide, low, and long. A clean example with a post-2000 twin turbo 1JZ-GTE would slay all day and pull tail all night.

I had an 1986.5 Supra non turbo. That was the absolute favorite car I’ve owned. It was simply a nice car. It wasn’t super fast. But I loved the ride. It was totaled when a driver turned too sharp and knocked the front end crooked. 😢😢 . The only major problem I had with it was the head gasket at around 120,000 miles. It never ran hot. And the head was not warped at all. I simply replaced the gasket and properly torqued the head bolts and drove it until the aforementioned accident at 180,000 miles.

Its not forgotten, theres one in my garage. Saved it from the junkyard after it blew an engine, now its got a 2jz. I hear the mk3s called "cope cars" all the time, and that may be true for some people, but its really a time capsule of a jdm grand tourer. Its shockingly light on its feet and goes 85 mph without you even knowing it. Its a shame its got 80s engines tech with the 7m since the 1jz wasnt released in the US, and only a 5 speed, that really holds it back.

The 7M-GTE had a rare engine defect , the issue led to many head gasket failures, and despite most owners simply re-torquing the head bolts or upgrading to ARP bolts to resolve the situation, it was already too late for many. These issues also led many to believe that the engines suffered from rod-knock.

I'm just on an 88 NA auto, but with brand new Pilot Sport 4S tires, it's HILARIOUSLY easy to break the rear end out. Even if it's just foggy outside that's enough to send you flying lol.
