Miyoo mini sold out? Get this instead!

Ғылым және технология

Well that’s annoying. Everyone is telling me to get a Miyoo mini and I can’t actually get one! They're sold out everywhere! No stock on any website, and on AliExpress they're stupidly expensive! What the heck should I get instead?!? If only there was a video I could watch that would explain the best alternatives to the Miyoo mini. Oh. This is that video, apparently. Cool.

    In my country, both Miyoo Mini and RG280V are in stock. After doing my research, I chose the RG280V since I've read about the Miyoo Mini being more fragile. Durability is important to me and I've heard that Anbernic devices are built like tanks. I'm glad to see that the performance is just as good as the Miyoo Mini!

    Dude my mini screen cracked IN THE CASE. The reason they give you a screen protector and a semi hard case is because the screen is meant to be behind a plastic cover. Because of this if you breath on the thing it busts. I have been trying to get a replacement screen forever. They are relatively cheap but they are in stock even less than the console itself. I love the mini but It needs a far more durable screen I have been looking for an alternative maybe taking the motherboard and guts and swapping it into somthing for a gameboy or somthing but I haven't seen anyone do this yet.

    The Miyoo Mini's aesthetic is really what has me sold on it vs a potential alternative. The old Gameboy look makes it something that I could grab just for a collection if nothing else, while beefier systems like the RP3 can handle the more frequent retro gaming task. Still, the RG280V seems like a solid choice if you don't want to wait.

    Thanks! I definitely use the mini more often, it's a bit more pocket friendly and I have a soft spot for the oldschool gameboy vibe, but the 280v was my favorite before I got the mini and I still love it. The browsing experience on the OS is much nicer on the 280v, the game library on the Mini looks kinda amateur compared to the 280v with Adam image. The 280v is definitely more durable, it feels like a tank while the mini feels more flimsy. However that comes at a cost, the 280v is heavier, and since the mini lives in my cargo pocket having it be as light as possible is better for my use case.

    How is the screen size compared to a GBA SP? I remember getting a GBA Micro years ago but had to sell it due to the size being so small my eyes hurt playing on it after awhile. Though, I have a feeling this size might be just right for pocket playing.

    It's the same size screen as the gba sp. The gba micro had a much smaller screen. The added benefit to this screen is the pixel density, the pixels are super crisp and I think for someone with sensitive eyes the 280v will be very comfortable.

Have you ever thought about doing a video regarding the poor durability on the Miyoo mini? A tiny small one that is super portable (for me it's the Miyoo Mini or the 280v), a larger-but-still-portable higher powered device for the 3d retro systems (for me it's the Retroid Pocket 3, soon to be 3+), and a not-so-portable higher end gaming device like a laptop or a steam deck for at home serious game sessions with high upscaled graphics (for me it's my gaming PC).

I was super disappointed to find out that despite the fact that it's super outdated now it's still going for about $250 plus taxes. After watching yours and Retro Corps videos I decided on picking up RP3 since it's so affordable and running Android like the console it's replacing, and the 280v as a more pocketable, sturdy device. Which together still cost less than just outright replacing the XD+. Just bit sad though that a few days after my RP3 shipped the RP3+ was announced. Guess that's just how this market works now.

    One thing to keep in mind when comparing the Miyoo Mini and the Anbernic 280V - that I never see handheld reviewers discuss - is the hidden costs of the Mini. While boasting a great screen with spectacular image quality for its size and slightly superior hardware over the 280V, the Mini has a notoriously poor build quality that makes the device incredibly fragile compared to other handhelds: the default shoulder buttons are very uncomfortable to use, and people have reported their screens breaking from just a two-foot drop on a carpeted floor. To offset this, most enthusiasts order custom shoulder buttons and cases from Etsy which vastly improve the ergonomics and screen safety for the Mini, but each of these costs roughly 25 dollars, plus shipping. Thus, in order to get the best experience out of your Miyoo Mini, you can expect to spend another $60-70 on your device, meaning you're paying twice in total as much as you think you are when ordering. And that's not even factoring in other Etsy customizations, like stickers or new face buttons! Yeah, that $65 price tag sounds really appealing for the budget-minded, but the same group of people who convinced you into buying the Mini in the first place will just as easily sucker you into falling down the rabbit hole of blinging out your Mini to the max, and suddenly you find yourself spending upwards of $150 on a compact handheld, when you could've spent that kind of money on an objectively superior device like the 353M or Retroid Pocket 3+. Yes, the Mini has a better screen than the 280V, but honestly, we're talking about a 2.8 inch screen, here; unless you've got your face shoved right in front of the screen, you're probably not gonna notice _that_ significant of a difference. The Mini can also play some games better than the 280V, but that's only natural, considering the former is using newer hardware than the latter. Honestly, the fact that a device as old as the 280V can still give the Mini a run for its money is testament to the quality of Anbernic devices. Speaking of quality, the 280V beats the Mini here by a landslide for the simple fact that it doesn't break to a stiff breeze like the Mini does. The ergonomics are incredibly divisive: no two people's hands are exactly the same, and some find the 280V's thicker and wider build more comfortable than the Mini's thinner build, and vice-versa. They play the same number of consoles/games, so you're not really missing out on one over the other. Honestly, 9 times out of 10, the biggest reason so many people shill so hard for the Miyoo Mini over other mini handhelds is purely for the aesthetics of having a tiny Game Boy-nostalgic system, and its ease of customization. (It's the same reason why people actually pay for old Anbernics or Retroid Pocket 2+, when a used PSP with CFW is arguably superior: they value the coolness factor of a shiny new machine over the utility of an old corpo device.) The 280V has a less visually appealing build, but at least you can actually get your hands on one, and the new 35XX has better hardware, a bigger screen, and a bigger frame - perfect for folks with big hands - while still being a "mini" handheld. The Miyoo Mini is basically the Jordans or Air Max Plus of the handheld community: you don't really need it, and other models can get the job done just as well, but damn do you look good and feel good showing it off.

  • @TechDweeb

    @TechDweeb

    You're not wrong. I admit that my main appeal of the mini is the look of it. I love that olschool gameboy vibe, I have no shame in saying so. I also have skinny fingers and the mini feels great to me, but I know lots of people say it's too small for them. And also I'm VERY careful with my devices, I never let them get a single scratch or drop, but I know not everyone is like that and they need something more robust. It's not a one-size-fits-all device, that's for sure. The 280v is probably going to be a better choice for lots of people.

  • @UberPwner09

    @UberPwner09

    Жыл бұрын

    @@TechDweeb Absolutely. I should say, I don't dislike the Miyoo Mini, nor am I an Anbernic fanboy or anything; I too love the Mini's cute mini GameBoy aesthetics and the smoothness of gameplay is top notch! The Mini is essentially the iPhone to 280V's Nokia. It definitely deserves all the praise it gets as an ideal handheld you can always carry with you. My main beef stems from all the issues _around_ the Mini. It's, in my opinion, perhaps just a tiny bit overhyped, and it makes some people obsessed with getting their hands on one - either overpaying from secondhand sellers, obsessively checking the official store, and/or ignoring all the other great handhelds that are available. That leads to the 2nd problem, the supply and resupply: the demand for the Mini vastly exceeds the supply, and the company really seems to struggle to keep up. The time they restock is always the same (10 AM Beijing time), but the days they do so are incredibly inconsistent - sometimes they'll have new stock by the next day, or it can take a few days or even a week to do so. Of course, the Mini is so hyped that when there is a new stock, it sells out within _seconds._ I've had times where it sells out _right when I'm in the middle of processing the payment for my order_ and then I can't finish the order anymore. Also, in my opinion, you shouldn't ever have to set your alarm clock to ungodly hours in the morning just for the _chance_ of _maybe_ getting your hands on a product; especially not if you're working a 9-to-5 job. My last issue around the Mini (not with the handheld itself) is that I wish retro reviewers would be a little more open and honest with the fragility problem it has. I, too, am very careful with all my things (I never open my books more than a few inches because I hate hate _hate_ when the cover bends up), but like you said, not everyone is like that, and accidents do happen. My nightmare scenario would be if I'm on the road on a job or on vacation and I'm playing on my hypothetical Mini - assuming I'm not the one driving, of course - when the car hits a bump in the road, and the Mini slips from my hands, hits the floor, and breaks; then I'd be stuck for the rest of the trip with no games to pass the time! Of particular concern would be parents who are looking to get a handheld device for their kids to play with and enjoy. Most kids are pretty careless or reckless, and they can and probably will break their Mini sooner rather than later. Because of this, I would NOT recommend the Miyoo Mini for younger kids, despite its kid-friendly appearance, but parents probably won't know this until it's too late, hence why I think reviewers should be more upfront about the Mini's fragility. Despite all this, if you _are_ careful, you don't mind the time & effort hunting for one, and you enjoy the look, feel and gameplay, then absolutely get a Miyoo Mini! Just be mindful of the fact that viable alternatives DO exist. But man, if they made a Mini with the build quality of an Anbernic or corpo handheld, it'd probably be the greatest handheld ever made.

    I actually had the chance to get a miyoo mini but got a rg280v instead. No regrets, the size of the rg280v for me is a big seller. Just got it yesterday, I'm going to put Adam firmware on it next. The firmware on it okay however Adam is something wonderful. The miyoo mini isn't as good honestly imo. It's more powerful however at what need does that matter. They both run the same stuff and more power doesn't add much honestly when your max emulation is ps1 and both can do it. This handheld is also very tough in comparison to the Miyoo mini. Rg280v build quality is really great. In the end retro handhelds come to a person's needs larger suit others more and in my case this tiny thing is exactly what I love.

  • @TechDweeb

    Yeah the mini has a little bit more power but it only affects like 5 ps1 games, the rest play fine on both devices. The 280v is superior in many ways actually. Honestly the main reason I prefer the mini is the look & feel of it. I love me the old-school Gameboy aesthetic!

    @@TechDweeb Yeah its a nice look, I really like the famicon RG280v red gold. Sometimes these comparisons no one wins or looses. It's like when people used to debate and maybe still do (I don't pay attention to it anymore) to thr Xbox vs Playstation. Sometimes a console fits you're life style.

    Ya know what, I chose the rg280v just because I like the the looks of it and I was already very well acquainted with anbernic. I love the look of the miyoo mini as well, but I don’t know at the time it just seemed like the more natural fit for me. Do I wish I bought both now that I can never get a miyoo mini, of course. I like them both for different reasons, but that’s alright I still love this thing, even though I do 89% of my gaming on the retroid 3+, like I absolutely adore the rp3p it’s magnificent. Sometimes I just have to kiss it I love it so much, and it pisses my girlfriend all the time. I have two and she turned them into a bikini the other day, which pissed me off. Anyways, beyond my point… I still find times when I want to pick up my 280v instead. It’s got it’s own special place in my heart,

    aliexpress demands you give them photos of your credit card, passport, and bank statements when creating an account. due to privacy concerns with giving sensitive info to china, aliexpress is not an option. hence, finding a non-aliexpress outlet at a relatively cheaper price is the cost of preventing further data exposure. so, $100 is a reasonable non-aliexpress target price at this time, not $150.

    possibly. i have tried many times over the years and was stopped either during signup or when trying to make my first purchase. googling about this, i see some folks flagged years after they already had their account as well. it could by any number of things like using a vpn or whatever. they may be doing this for fraud prevention, but i just value better privacy by not voluntarily giving them more than the required information to make an actual legitimate purchase.

    Yeah it's definitely more durable. I don't think it plays quite as well as the miyoo mini on the higher end PS1 games, but honestly it's totally fine, they're barely any different in terms of performance. Honestly the only reason I prefer the mini is the way it looks. I'm a sucker for the good old Gameboy vibe. If Anbernic released a MINI handheld that looked like a Gameboy I'd be all over it. (I know they have the big boy, but for me I need it to be tiny so it can live in my cargo pocket and not weigh me down).
